Rabbit-derived human Thelazia callipaeda infection: a case report.

In November 2021, a 19-year-old medical student was diagnosed with a rabbit-derived Thelazia callipaeda infection in her left eye. She visited her doctor because she removed the white object by herself with a cotton swab 2 days earlier. She explained to the doctor that she rubbed her eyes without washing her hands when rabbit hair got into her eyes during the animal experiment class at school 2 weeks earlier. The other 2 worms were then taken out with ophthalmic forceps and were placed into physiological saline. The worms were sent to the Shandong Academy of Eye Disease Prevention and Therapy

Drosophilidae feeding on animals and the inherent mystery of their parasitism.

Insect evolution, from a free to a parasitic lifestyle, took eons under the pressure of a plethora of ecological and environmental drivers in different habitats, resulting in varying degrees of interactions with their hosts. Most Drosophilidae are known to be adapted to feeding on substrates rich in bacteria, yeasts and other microfungi. Some of them, mainly those in the Steganinae subfamily, display a singular behaviour, feeding on animal tissues or secretions. This behaviour may represent an evolving tendency towards parasitism. Indeed, while the predatory attitude is typical for the larval

First report of canine ocular thelaziosis by Thelazia callipaeda in Portugal.

BACKGROUND: Thelazia callipaeda eyeworms are transmitted by the non-biting insect vector Phortica variegata in Europe and infest the conjunctiva(s) of several mammalians, including dogs and humans. Infested hosts might remain asymptomatic or display clinical manifestations characterized by variable degrees of severity. METHODS: From July to November 2011, nine dogs were detected with eyeworms at two veterinary clinics in Chaves and Bragança (North of Portugal). Nematodes collected from dogs were morphologically and molecularly characterized at species level. RESULTS: Nematodes were identifie

Proposed histological progression of the Spirocerca lupi-induced oesophageal lesion in dogs.

This study aims to outline the histological progression of the Spirocerca lupi nodule from infection to neoplastic transformation. Sixty-two spirocercosis-induced nodules, 42 non-neoplastic and 20 neoplastic, were stained with HE. Ten non-overlapping high power fields per nodule were examined and non-neoplastic and neoplastic nodules were compared. Inflammation was scored 0-3 and revealed a score of 1.91+/-0.52 in the non-neoplastic and 0.97+/-0.5 in the neoplastic cases (p<0.01). In most non-neoplastic cases the inflammatory infiltrate was lymphoplasmacytic and in the neoplastic cases neutrop

Scanning electron microscopic observations on adult Spirocerca lupi (Nematoda: Spirurida, Thelaziidae).

Scanning electron microscopy was used to study the surface ultrastructure of adult worms of Spirocerca lupi. At the anterior end of both sexes, the mouth is hexagonal, without definite lips. Around the mouth, two pairs of submedian cephalic papillae and two lateral amphids are present. There is a pair of lateral cervical papillae. At the anterior end of the body, on the ventral side, an excretory pore is seen. In the female, the vulva is located anteriorly and the tail is blunt, with a pair of subterminal phasmids. The male tail is spiral, with four pairs of preanal papillae, a single large me

Thelazia callipaeda in free-ranging brown bears (Ursus arctos) from Romania.

Thelazia callipaeda is a zoonotic spirurid nematode infecting the conjunctival sac of various mammalian hosts, including carnivores and humans. Although initially restricted to Asia, the parasite has expanded across Europe over the past two decades, with reports of infection in domestic and wild hosts as well as humans. In Romania, T. callipaeda has been documented in several wild carnivore species and lagomorphs, but not yet in brown bears (Ursus arctos), despite housing the largest European bear population. Between 2021 and 2025, the eyes of 25 brown bears legally hunted in different regions

Epidemiological, morphological, and molecular characterization of thelazia spp. in European bison (bison bonasus) in Poland.

Nematodes of the genus Thelazia (also referred to as eyeworms) pose a growing concern for wild and domestic ruminants. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, species composition, and associated ocular pathology of Thelazia infection in several European bison populations in Poland. The eyes of 223 European bison were examined over five years (2020–2024). Nematodes of the genus Thelazia were identified based on morphometrical and molecular analysis of the cox1 sequences. Epidemiological analysis of Thelazia infection in relation to age, sex, genetic line of European bison, as well as se

First report of canine ocular thelaziosis in the Muntenia Region, Romania.

Ocular thelaziosis by Thelazia callipaeda is a vector-borne disease that infects domestic and wild carnivores as well as humans. In this paper, we present two cases of ocular thelaziosis in dogs that had never traveled outside Romania. Both presented with moderate conjunctivitis and ocular discharge. In total, 41 adult nematodes were removed from the conjunctival sacs of both dogs; these were identified via morphology as T. callipaeda. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of canine ocular thelaziosis caused by T. callipaeda from the Muntenia Region of Romania.

Contrasting shifts in potential climatic suitability of two Thelazia callipaeda vectors (Phortica okadai and Phortica variegata) across China and Europe under climate change.

BACKGROUND: Phortica okadai and Phortica variegata are the primary vectors of the zoonotic eyeworm Thelazia callipaeda, which infects humans and various mammals. Climate change and intensified human activities have altered the potential suitable habitats of these vectors, posing a risk of expanded T. callipaeda transmission. This study aims to predict the current potential suitable habitats and future distribution patterns of the two species, providing a scientific basis for vector-borne disease prevention and control. METHODS: Species occurrence records were compiled from the Global Biodiver

Diagnosis and Treatment of Thelazia callipaeda Infection: A Case Report.

This study reports a 50-year-old male case of Thelazia callipaeda infection without a history of pet contact. The patient exhibited chronic ocular surface inflammation after exposure to wild insects and was misdiagnosed multiple times with bacterial conjunctivitis before definitive diagnosis by an ophthalmic specialist. This report emphasizes the core steps of the T. callipaeda extraction procedure. These steps include preoperative preparation, topical ocular anesthesia using 0.4% oxybuprocaine hydrochloride eye drops, sufficient exposure of the surgical field with an eyelid speculum, precise

Acute mesenteric ischemia-like syndrome associated with suspected Spirocerca lupi aberrant migration in dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To describe acute mesenteric infarction due to suspected Spirocerca lupi aberrant migration in 5 dogs. CASE SERIES SUMMARY: All dogs were large breed, none of which exhibited typical clinical signs associated with spirocercosis. All dogs were eventually diagnosed with septic peritonitis. On exploratory laparotomy, thickening of the jejunal arteries, surrounding mesojejunum, and segmental necrosis were identified. Similar thickening and hematoma formation were found in other regions of the mesentery. In 4 of the cases, the necrotic segment was located in the distal jejunum. Histolog

Human ocular thelaziasis in Karnataka.

Thelaziasis is an arthropod-born disease of the eye and adnexa caused by Thelazia callipaeda, a nematode parasite transmitted by drosophilid flies to carnivores and humans. Because of its distribution mainly confined to South Asian countries and Russia, it is commonly known as Oriental eye worm. It is often under-reported and not been given its due clinical importance. We report first case of human thelaziasis from Hassan District, Karnataka. Five creamy-white, translucent worms were removed from the conjunctival sac of a 74-year-old male patient. Based on morphological characters, the worms w
