Theory of Mind impairment in focal versus generalized epilepsy.

Theory of Mind (ToM) is a critical component of social cognition, and thus, its impairment may adversely affect social functioning and quality of life. Recent evidence has suggested that it is impaired in epilepsy. What is not clear, however, is whether it is related to particular types of epilepsy or other factors. We undertook the present study to explore ToM in patients with focal versus those with generalized epilepsy, the particular pattern of ToM deficits, and the potential influence of antiepileptic medication load. Our sample included 149 adults: 79 patients with epilepsy (34 with gene

Cognitive and affective theory of mind in Korsakoff's syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Korsakoff's syndrome (KS) is a chronic neuropsychiatric disorder characterised by severe anterograde amnesia and executive deficits. Theory of Mind (ToM) is the capacity to represent others' mental states such as their knowledge, thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and intentions in order to explain and predict their behaviour. Surprisingly this topic has received hardly any attention in research on KS, although the severity of behavioural problems in KS suggest possible ToM difficulties. The aim of the present study was therefore to assess whether cognitive and affective ToM are impaired

Theory of mind in children with Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

OBJECTIVE: Neurofibromatosis Type I (NF1) is a single gene disorder associated with cognitive and behavioral deficits. While there is clear evidence for poorer social outcomes in NF1, the factors underlying reduced social function are not well understood. This study examined theory of mind (ToM) in children with NF1 and unaffected controls. METHOD: ToM was assessed in children with NF1 (n = 26) and unaffected controls (n = 36) aged 4-12 years using a nonverbal picture sequencing task. The task assessed understanding of ToM (unrealized goals, false belief, pretence, intention), while controlli

Theory of Mind (ToM) Development in Thai Deaf Children.

This study explored theory of mind (ToM) development in school-aged deaf children. To address new questions, we gave a standard, well-controlled false-belief test to a large (n = 200) sample of severely-to-profoundly deaf children aged 8-15 years in a non-Western culture (Thailand). There were 190 deaf children of hearing parents and 10 deaf native signers with signing deaf parents, consistent with overall population ratios. Comparing our Thai sample's ToM performance on standard tests of false-belief understanding with that reported in past studies, our results showed a 67% ToM success rate f

Theory of Mind Impairments in Women With Cocaine Addiction.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the Theory of Mind performance of female cocaine-dependent users (CDUs) and possible associations between theory of mind performance and features of cocaine use. METHOD: Sixty women controlled for age, education, individual income, and IQ participated in this study: 30 in the CDU group and 30 in the healthy control group. Participants were assessed for theory of mind with the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET), a test of understanding of first-order and second-order false beliefs, and the Hinting task. Drug use parameters, clinical symptoms, and neurop

Theory of Mind in normal ageing and neurodegenerative pathologies.

This paper reviews findings in three subcomponents of social cognition (i.e., Theory of Mind, facial emotion recognition, empathy) during ageing. Changes over time in social cognition were evaluated in normal ageing and in patients with various neurodegenerative pathologies, such as Alzheimer's disease, mild cognitive impairment, frontal and temporal variants of frontotemporal lobar degeneration and Parkinson's disease. Findings suggest a decline in social cognition with normal ageing, a decline that is at least partially independent of a more general cognitive or executive decline. The invest

Hemispheric asymmetry and theory of mind: is there an association?

INTRODUCTION: In autism and schizophrenia attenuated/atypical functional hemispheric asymmetry and theory of mind impairments have been reported, suggesting common underlying neuroscientific correlates. We here investigated whether impaired theory of mind performance is associated with attenuated/atypical hemispheric asymmetry. An association may explain the co-occurrence of both dysfunctions in psychiatric populations. METHODS: Healthy participants (n=129) performed a left hemisphere (lateralised lexical decision task) and right hemisphere (lateralised face decision task) dominant task as we

Indirect Pathways to Social Functioning in Autistic Children: The Roles of Verbal Comprehension, Task-Based Theory of Mind, and Caregiver-Perceived Theory of Mind.

PURPOSE: Mixed results exist regarding the relationships between theory of mind (ToM) and social functioning in children with autism. This inconsistency may stem from a predominant focus on explicit ToM knowledge, with insufficient consideration of applied ToM competence and verbal comprehension. Further research is needed to incorporate these factors into the understanding of social functioning. This study developed mediation models to examine the links among explicit ToM knowledge, caregiver-perceived applied ToM competence, verbal comprehension, and social functioning in children with autis

Theory of mind: A cognitive endophenotype of juvenile myoclonic epilepsy?

OBJECTIVE: Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME), the most common idiopathic generalized epilepsy, is associated with neuropsychological and psychiatric comorbidities, including social cognition and theory of mind (ToM) deficits. The interplay between clinical features, social cognition, and their neural and genetic substrates remains poorly understood. We investigated social cognition in individuals with JME and their unaffected siblings to explore its potential as a disease endophenotype. METHODS: In this prospective cross-sectional study, 52 individuals with JME (age = 29 ± 11 years, 56% femal

Theory of mind skill predicts anticipatory guilt-proneness in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Adaptive management of guilt and shame is regulated by social approach and withdrawal and thus relates to the quantity and quality of our social interactions. People with schizophrenia (SZ) self-report reduced guilt-proneness compared to healthy controls (HC). However, previous studies have not distinguished between anticipatory and consequential guilt, nor between guilty affect and associated action tendencies. STUDY DESIGN: We compared 24 SZ with 24 HC on anticipatory guilt, (TOSCA-3, GASP); consequential guilt (PFQ-2), and empathy and Theory of Mind (ToM). STUDY

Theory of mind in neurodevelopmental disorders: beyond autistic spectrum disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Theory of mind (ToM) is the human ability to perceive, interpret, and attribute the mental states of other people, and the alteration of this cognitive function is a core symptom of autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). In such other neurodevelopmental disorders as childhood-onset obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and Tourette syndrome (TS) that can present with cognitive dysfunctions, ToM has been less extensively studied, especially in the young population. The aim of the study was to compare advanced ToM between groups of young people diagnosed with OCD, TS, or ASD and a control

Reading and Theory of Mind in Adolescents with Cochlear Implant.

Previous research has shown a possible link between reading comprehension and theory of mind (ToM), but these findings are unclear in adolescents with cochlear implants (CI). In the present study, reading comprehension and ToM were assessed in adolescents with CI and the relation between both skills was also studied. Two sessions were performed on two groups of adolescents aged between 12 and 16 years of age (36 adolescents with CI and 54 participants with typical hearing, TH). They were evaluated by means of a standardized reading battery, a false belief task, and Faux Pas stories. The result

Theory of mind across lifespan from ages 16 to 81 years.

PURPOSE: Impaired theory of mind (ToM) is a neurobehavioral phenotype of epilepsy. Given that the age transitions affect cognitive development and decline, it is important to refine ToM across the lifespan. This study evaluated ToM in healthy subjects, taking into account education, gender, and other functions, aiming to clarify its specificity and relationships to major demographic and cognitive domains. METHODS: A hundred and seventy subjects from ages 16 to 81 years (68 men) who received five to 17 years of schooling were evaluated using a Faux Pas Task (FPT) that is solved at the end of c

Theory of Mind in Children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Theory of mind (ToM) refers to the ability to understand and make inferences about other people's intentions, feelings, and beliefs. Although children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are known to have deficits in social-cognitive function, little is known about ToM in FASD. METHODS: ToM ability was assessed using a developmentally sensitive ToM battery, including the reading the mind in the eyes (RME) test, a measure of mental inferential ability that has been found to be impaired in other clinical populations. IQ and executive function (EF) were assessed as potential

Judging Strangers' Trustworthiness is Associated with Theory of Mind Skills.

Trusting people requires evaluating them to assess their trustworthiness. Evaluating a stranger's intentions is likely to be one method of assessing trustworthiness. The present study tested the hypothesis that judgments of trustworthiness are associated with mind reading skills, also called theory of mind (ToM). We tested a group of healthy participants and a group of patients with paranoid schizophrenia. Both groups made ToM judgments and judged the trustworthiness of strangers. Participants were also assessed for their disposition to trust as well as levels of paranoid belief. As anticipate

Theory of mind development can withstand compromised episodic memory development.

As humans, we are consciously aware of unobservable mental states, including our own during episodic memory and other people's by having a "theory of mind" (ToM). Episodic memory and ToM are closely related: they share a neural substrate and emerge close in time in ontogenetic development. This relationship is central to prominent child development and cognitive neuroscience theories of ToM, but its causal nature has not been tested empirically. The current study examined whether normal episodic memory development is necessary for normal ToM development. To investigate this, we tested H.C., a

Theory of mind deficits in children with fragile X syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Given the consistent findings of theory of mind deficits in children with autism, it would be extremely beneficial to examine the profile of theory of mind abilities in other clinical groups such as fragile X syndrome (FXS) and Down syndrome (DS). Aim The aim of the present study was to assess whether boys with FXS are impaired in simple social situations that require them to understand their own and others' mental states - in essence: do they have a 'theory of mind'? METHOD: Well-standardized tasks of theory of mind, the location change false belief task and the appearance-realit

Theory of mind, leisure reading, and reading comprehension in adulthood.

Theory of mind, our understanding of our own and others' mental states, is related to leisure reading as well as reading comprehension. However, most work has been siloed by reading domain. Whereas research on leisure reading and theory of mind has been conducted mainly with adults using the Reading the Mind in the Eyes task (RMET), research on reading comprehension and theory of mind has been conducted mainly with children and a range of theory of mind tasks. This study integrates these lines of research in adults by examining the pathways among leisure reading, theory of mind, and reading co
