[Use of bladder thermistor catheters in an intensive care unit. Comparative study of core temperature measurements with bladder thermometers and rectal thermometers in an intensive care unit].

Bladder temperature measured by a thermistor tipped urinary catheter was compared to rectal temperature in 14 ICU patients. During a period of five days 2 x 232 measurements were recorded, and good correlation was found between rectal and bladder temperatures (R = 0.97). There did not seem to be any drift in the bladder thermistor. Measurement was accurate during periods of oliguria. We find that bladder temperature measurement is reliable, safe, convenient and accurate for routine use in the ICU.

Evaluation of the Distress Thermometer in older patients with cancer.

INTRODUCTION: The Geriatric Depression Scale is a useful tool in screening for depression in older adults, a particularly vulnerable population in oncology. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Distress Thermometer (DT) has been validated as a fast and effective screening tool for psychological distress in general oncology populations, and it could possibly be used as a surrogate for the longer Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) test in older adults with cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective cross-sectional study in older adults prior to starting cancer treatment, we

Inaccuracy of Temporal Thermometer Measurement by Age and Race.

OBJECTIVE: Rapid vital sign assessment, including temperature measurement, is critical among pediatric patients presenting to the emergency department (ED). While error rates in temporal thermometry are well documented, the potential for differential error rates by demographics is not well established. Our objective was to evaluate error rates of temporal thermometers by demographic variables, specifically race and age, among pediatric patients in the ED. METHODS: Pediatric patients (≤18 years old) identified as either Black or White in the medical record presenting to the ED between January

Wearable deep body thermometers and their uses in continuous monitoring for daily healthcare.

This paper introduces noninvasive deep body thermometers suitable for continuous deep body temperature (DBT) measurement. On the basis of their features, they were used in DBT monitoring for daily healthcare. A thermometer based on the dual-heat-flux method (T_DHFM), and an aural canal thermistor (ACT), were used in two studies of daily healthcare. The medical device CoreTemp by Terumo, based on the zero-heat-flux method, was also used for a DBT reference. The first study focused on preventing heat stroke in a high-temperature and high-humidity environment, while the other focused on the tempe

Three types of skin-surface thermometers: a comparison of reliability, validity, and responsiveness.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the reliability, validity, and responsiveness of a thermistor thermometer (thermistor) and two different infrared thermometers (one designed to measure tympanic temperature and one for skin temperature). DESIGN: Reliability and validity were evaluated by making two separate measurements from the skin at identical spots of each hand, forearm, shoulder, thigh, shin, and foot in 17 healthy subjects. Intramuscular temperature was recorded at the hand and shin sites. Test-retest reliability was calculated using intraclass correlation for each instrument. Pearson correlation a

Development of an Impact Thermometer for use in combination with the Distress Thermometer as a brief screening tool for adjustment disorders and/or major depression in cancer patients.

Screening cancer patients for adjustment disorders and major depression is important, because both are prevalent and often underrecognized. The purpose of this study was to validate the Distress and Impact Thermometer, a 2-item questionnaire, which we newly developed as a brief screening tool for detection of adjustment disorders and/or major depression. Two hundred ninety-five cancer patients completed the Distress and Impact Thermometer and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and were examined by psychiatrists based on DSM-IV criteria. Using cutoff points for detection of adjus

Tympanic thermometers support fast and accurate temperature monitoring in acute and alternative care.

This article explores body temperature and the physiological process of thermoregulation. Normal body temperature and body temperature changes are discussed, including comorbidities associated with body temperature and signs of hyperthermia and hypothermia, and the factors that affect intraoperative temperature regulation. The evidence base behind thermometry is discussed and is applied to contemporary clinical conditions and symptoms, including: sepsis and suspected COVID-19. After discussing clinical considerations and regulations that encompass thermometry, three case studies present the us

A Molecular "Thermometer" for Measuring Effective Non-Local Exchange.

Non-local exchange (NLX) is a key ingredient for accurate density functional calculations, but its effective strength is often hard to quantify beyond simple global hybrids. To this end, we introduce a molecular probe based on the isomerization of hexaethynylbenzene to carbo-benzene, a reaction with exceptional sensitivity to exchange effects. Using the isomerization energy, we define a simple relative measure, t X $$ {t}_{\mathrm{X}} $$ , that gauges the effective NLX of a method on a scale ranging from 0 for the local density approximation to 100 for Hartree-Fock. Across a broad set of d

Development of hypothermia measurable fiber radiometric thermometer for thermotherapy.

Temperature monitoring is extremely important during thermotherapy. Fiber-optic temperature sensors are preferred because of their flexibility and immunity to electromagnetic interference. Although many types of fiber-optic sensors have been developed, clinically adopting them remains challenging. Here, we report a silica fiber-based radiometric thermometer using a low-cost extended InGaAs detector to detect black body radiation between 1.7 and 2.4 μm. For the first time, this silica fiber-based thermometer is capable of measuring temperatures down to 35°C, making it suitable for monitoring hy

Validation of the Distress Thermometer with bone marrow transplant patients.

The Distress Thermometer (DT) is a one-item screening measure of psychological distress in cancer patients. This study examines the operating characteristics of the DT in patients about to undergo bone marrow transplant (BMT). Patients (N=491) completed the DT, the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-State Version (STAI-S), the ECOG Performance Status Scale, and the Patient Problem List. DT scores were related to higher depression, higher anxiety, and poorer performance status. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses of
