Feasibility of cardiac MR thermometry at 0.55 T.

Radiofrequency catheter ablation is an established treatment strategy for ventricular tachycardia, but remains associated with a low success rate. MR guidance of ventricular tachycardia shows promises to improve the success rate of these procedures, especially due to its potential to provide real-time information on lesion formation using cardiac MR thermometry. Modern low field MRI scanners (<1 T) are of major interest for MR-guided ablations as the potential benefits include lower costs, increased patient access and device compatibility through reduced device-induced imaging artefacts and sa

[THERMOMETRY APPLICATION FOR ESTIMATION OF THE SKIN BURNS DEPTH].

Determination of the burn wound depth, using noncontact infrared thermometry, permits to predict the burn affection severity, basing on the revealed difference between local, perifocal temperature and temperature in certain nonaffected areas of the body surface. The temperature difference (ΔT) over 1 °C constitutes a strict criterion of the skin burn presence. The temperature 34 °C have been considered a border one for the skin burns. If the burn wound temperature in 24 h after trauma was lower 34 °C and ΔT 2 °C and more, it have witnessed the presence of deep burn of the skin. High sensitivit

Comparison of rectal and tympanic thermometry during exercise.

BACKGROUND: Heat-related deaths are among the most preventable injuries in athletics. We sought to examine two methods of monitoring body temperature during exercise as a means of preventing heat-related illnesses. METHODS: Ten adult subjects exercised in hot, humid conditions while body temperature was monitored by rectal (Tre) and tympanic (Tty) thermometry. RESULTS: Our results indicate that increase in Tty was significantly greater than increase in Tre during exercise. However, rectal temperatures continued to increase after exercise cessation and peak temperatures were not significantly

Effect of otitis media on infrared tympanic thermometry.

This study was designed to determine if temperature readings using a new tympanic thermometer are affected by otitis media. These readings were also compared to a rectal or oral temperature. Eighty-four children with unilateral suppurative or non-suppurative otitis media diagnosed clinically by their pediatricians were enrolled in the study. Temperatures were measured in both ears using the Thermoscan PRO-1 Instant Thermometer and rectally or orally by a glass or electronic predictive thermometer. For 67 children with unilateral suppurative otitis media the mean temperature in infected ears wa

Photoluminescent thermometry based on europium-activated calcium sulphide.

A photoluminescent thermometer, based on the transient emission response of a europium-activated calcium sulphide phosphor, is described in detail. This optical thermometry system has special advantages for temperature measurements in microwave and RF fields and potential application in electromagnetically induced clinical hyperthermia. A laboratory system has been constructed which utilises a fibreoptic probe with external diameter 0.8 mm. A system temperature resolution of 0.1 degree C has been achieved in the range 37-47 degrees C.

Palmar thermometry for intraoperative success control of thoracic sympathectomy.

In a pilot study involving six patients, palmar thermometry was used as a non-invasive method for intraoperative success control during thoracic sympathectomy. Using commercially available thermo-elements and amplifier modules, a marked increase in temperature could be registered in five patients after the severance of their rami communicants grisei for the hand. This effect was associated with the long-term success of therapy for hyperhidrosis in all five patients. This initial experience demonstrates that palmar thermometry is sensitive enough to measure surgical success intraoperatively. Th

Frontal dynamic thermometry. Improvement in diagnosis of carotid stenosis.

This new method of frontal thermometry is based on a recording of the spontaneous reheating curve of the skin after cooling it to 25 degrees C. In cases of carotid stenosis, a thermal asymmetry of one of the three following kinds can be observed: thermal asymmetry from the start; asymmetry only during the reheating, or asymmetry during reheating and remaining afterwards. The reduction of the blood flow and a vaso-motor factor explain this asymmetry. This method allows better detection of clinical latent carotid stenosis.

Infrared fibers for radiometer thermometry in hypothermia and hyperthermia treatment.

Hypothermia is a condition which results from prolonged exposure to a cold environment. Rapid and efficient heating is needed to rewarm the patient from 32-35 degrees C to normal body temperature. Hyperthermia in cancer treatment involves heating malignant tumors to 42.5-43.0 degrees C for an extended period (e.g., 30 min) in an attempt to obtain remission. Microwave or radio frequency heating is often used for rewarming in hypothermia or for temperature elevation in hyperthermia treatment. One severe problem with such heating is the accurate measurement and control of temperature in the prese

All-optical fluorescence lifetime nanodiamond thermometry for intracellular photothermal hyperthermia.

Nanodiamond-based thermometry provides a photostable and biocompatible platform for nanoscale temperature sensing in biological environments. Most nanodiamond thermometry approaches rely on continuous-wave optically detected magnetic resonance, which requires microwave delivery and specialized instrumentation. Here, we demonstrate an all-optical alternative based on the temperature dependence of the fluorescence lifetime of nitrogen-vacancy centers in 100 nm nanodiamonds. To evaluate the performance of fluorescence lifetime-based nanodiamond thermometry under biologically relevant conditions,

TRIM: Simultaneous Thermometry, Ranging, and Imaging via a Monolithic Metalens.

While metasurfaces offer a pathway beyond the discrete architectures of conventional LWIR systems, physically fusing high-precision thermometry and passive ranging onto a single metalens remains a formidable challenge. Here, we demonstrate a monolithic, dual-focus metalens capable of simultaneous multidimensional sensing. By multiplexing two distinct focal lengths into a single metasurface, the system enables the parallel acquisition of spectral and spatial information. For thermal sensing, we implement a dual-band (9.6 and 10.6 µm) ratiometric method that effectively mitigates target emissivi

Single-pixel infrared imaging thermometry maps human inner canthi temperature.

Efficiently and accurately mapping the temperature of human inner canthi is crucial for disease diagnostics and monitoring. The specific anatomical location of the inner canthi precludes temperature screening methods that are invasive, require tissue contact, and/or demand active illumination. Camera-based thermography, although capable of passive and non-contact temperature mapping, suffers from low efficiency in pixel allocation to the inner canthi as well as from measurement inaccuracies due to background blending and moderate pixel sensitivity. In response to these challenges, we develop s

Resonant fiber-optic thermometry with high resolution and wide range.

We report a high-resolution and wide-range thermometer using a fiber Bragg grating Fabry-Perot cavity (FBG-FP) combined with beat frequency interrogation. Two distributed feedback (DFB) lasers are locked to the FBG-FP sensing head and a hydrogen cyanide H13C14N (HCN) gas cell, respectively, both using the Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) technique. The light beams from two lasers are brought together to interfere on a photodetector producing a beat frequency signal which provides a measure of the temperature change. Our sensor exhibits a dynamic range of ∼109 °C, a high resolution of 2×10-4 °C with an

Monitoring healing of acute Charcot's arthropathy with infrared dermal thermometry.

The purpose of this study was to describe the use of skin temperature assessment in diabetics with acute Charcot's arthropathy to monitor resolution of inflammation longitudinally throughout the course of treatment and to predict development of neuropathic ulcers. Thirty-nine diabetic subjects presenting with acute Charcot's arthropathy received thermometric monitoring throughout their treatment course. Subjects were treated with a standard protocol involving total contact casting, removable cast walkers, and progression to therapeutic shoes. There was a steady decrease in temperatures during

Liquid crystal skin thermometry: an accurate reflection of core temperature?

Oesophageal, rectal, bladder, tympanic and pulmonary artery sites are used intraoperatively to measure body temperature. However, the temperatures measured at each site have different physiological and practical importance. The present two-part study sought to compare liquid crystal (CR) skin temperature with other temperature monitors which are used routinely during surgery. The first part compared CR with oesophageal (OS) temperature during general inhalational anaesthesia. The second part compared CR with OS, pulmonary artery (PA), and bladder (BL) temperatures during the periods of rapid t
