INTRODUCTION: The Jena Soft Tissue Tumor Reference Center is the major German pathology institute for consultation of malignant mesenchymal tumors. Here, we present the clinicopathological data on thoracic soft tissue tumors of a two-year period.
METHODS: The tumors were analyzed according to their localization, type (soft tissue tumor, other tumor type, non-neoplastic lesion) and biological behavior. The frequency of the defined soft tissue tumor entities were considered after categorizing the cases according to the WHO Classification of Tumors. Gender and age were also assessed.
RESULTS: I

The adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-secreting neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) represent a rare but frequently severe disease that is associated with poor prognosis, if not adequately managed. Treatment strategies vary according to the characteristics of the tumor and the severity of hypercortisolism. The optimal treatment is surgical resection of the NEN with a curative intent. In unresectable or metastatic tumors, medical control of hypercortisolism with concomitant treatment of NENs based on current guidelines is suggested. Steroidogenesis inhibitors are the principal choice to control hy

BACKGROUND: Thoracic surgeons are commonly consulted to provide anterior thoracic exposure for infection and malignant neoplasms involving the thoracolumbar spine. These cases can present significant technical and management challenges secondary to the underlying pathology, associated anatomic inflammation, and impaired functional status. In this study, we review the perioperative outcomes in patients undergoing anterior spinal exposure for infection and neoplasm.
METHODS: 130 consecutive patients (61 women, 69 men) undergoing corpectomy, debridement, or debulking for osteomyelitis (n=50) or

Abnormal radiographic densities in the midportion of the chest are most commonly caused by neoplasms, cysts, or inflammatory disease. However, vascular lesions may present an identical x-ray appearance, with no distinguishing clinical history or physical findings. The cardiothoracic surgeon must be aware of this similarity in order to ensure the most appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic approach. In our experience, the most frequent problem in differential diagnosis is a lesion of the thoracic aorta or its arch branches simulating neoplasm. Nine such cases are presented, with pertinent conve

SMARCA4-deficient undifferentiated tumours exhibit undifferentiated and rhabdoid features. These highly aggressive neoplasms pose significant diagnostic challenges. They are characterised by an inactivating mutation of SMARCA4, leading to the loss of expression of Brahma-related gene 1 ( BRG1 ). Despite their rareness and poor differentiation as thoracic tumours, it is important to recognise these tumours because, despite being highly aggressive, there are potential treatment options for the future, such as immunotherapy and SMARCA4-targeted therapies. This case presentation aims to raise awar

A 12-year-old fox-terrier dog presented with forelimb lameness of 3-weeks duration. Ultrasonography revealed a mass within the thoracic wall and osteolysis of the left third rib. A squamous cell carcinoma was diagnosed by cytological examination of an ultrasound-guided fine needle aspirate of this mass. As a result of the diagnosis of neoplasia, the dog was euthanatized. Necropsy revealed a solitary expansile mass within the left cranial lung lobe, and a mass within the adjacent thoracic wall. Thickening of the pleura between the two masses was visible, although adhesions were not present. His

The authors are presenting a few considerations on Thoracic Esophageal Neoplasm, as resulted from an 18-cases study performed on patients that were operated between 1994-1999. The esophageal resection rate was of 50%, as follows: 7 Esophageal Resections and 2 Superior Polar Esogastric Resections. The digestive transit was reestablished by means of intrathoracic transposition of the stomach (6 cases) or of the right ileo-colon (2 cases). In one of the cases an Esogastric Anastomosis was performed at the neck level (cervical-right). Immediate post-op mortality after Esophageal Resection (1 case)

A case of giant cell tumor of the thoracic spine simulating mediastinal neoplasm was identified on plain films, CT scans, MR images, and with scintigraphy. CT showed a hypervascular soft-tissue mass with shell-like calcification in the right upper mediastinum. MR imaging showed a collapse of the T1 vertebral body and a mass extending to the mediastinum. The mass had a low signal on T1-weighted MR images and a predominantly high signal on T2-weighted images with heterogeneity. Technetium-99m methylene diphosphonate bone scintigraphy showed intense uptake in both the T1 and marginal parts of the

OBJECTIVE: Thoracic splenosis, implantation of autologous splenic tissue into the chest after diaphragmatic splenic injury, is rare and frequently mistaken for malignancy, leading to inappropriate treatment. This case highlights the risk of misdiagnosing post-traumatic thoracic splenosis as lung cancer.
CASE REPORT: A 69-year-old smoking male patient presented with 1 month of thoracic pain; computed tomography revealed a 3.3 cm left lower-lobe mass suspected as lung cancer. For the past 20 years, he underwent splenectomy after splenic and diaphragmatic injury following a severe motor vehicle

Primary osseous neoplasms of the thoracic and lumbar spine are uncommon lesions. Between 1965 and 1982, of 1971 patients with musculoskeletal neoplasms, only 29 (1.5%) had primary osseous tumors in these locations. There were eight children and 21 adults. Back pain was the most common complaint in 25 patients (86%), and neurologic symptoms or deficits were present in 16 patients (55%). All lesions were visible on routine spine roentgenograms, while computed tomography and myelography demonstrated spinal canal encroachment and extradural spinal cord compression in 19 patients (66%). The histolo

Reduced expression of E-cadherin, a Ca(2+)-dependent cell adhesion molecule present in normal epithelium, has been associated with invasive and metastatic cancer. Immunohistochemistry was used in examining the relationship between E-cadherin expression and stage in 59 oesophageal and 52 lung cancers. Advanced-stage oesophageal cancers were associated with both reduced and disorganised E-cadherin expression (P < 0.01). Advanced-stage lung adenocarcinomas generally exhibited disorganised or reduced E-cadherin expression, but no statistical association between expression pattern and stage was fou

NUT carcinoma, also known as NUT midline carcinoma, is an aggressive malignancy mainly affecting the midline structures of younger patients and almost invariably leading to death within a few months of the diagnosis. Morphologically, NUT carcinoma consists of sheets of monomorphous small or medium size cells with scant cytoplasm, commonly featuring areas of abrupt squamous differentiation with keratinization. Immunohistochemistry for NUT protein is sensitive and specific, typically showing a speckled nuclear reactivity, assisting in diagnosis. The molecular background of NUT carcinoma includes

Myopericytomas are perivascular myoid neoplasms that rarely exhibit malignant characteristics. They usually arise in the dermis or subcutaneous tissue and exceptionally involve deep soft tissues, with spinal localization being rare. We report the case of a previously healthy 32-year-old pregnant woman who presented with pain in the interscapular region and progressive loss of lower limb strength. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a solid neoplastic mass at the T3 level, with spinal canal invasion and spinal cord signal abnormalities. The pregnancy was terminated, followed by lesion embolizat

We present the case of a 41-year-old man who developed worsening mid-thoracic back pain and imaging revealed a well-circumscribed intramedullary tumor in the thoracic spinal cord. Subtotal resection was performed, and histopathological analysis showed a cytologically bland, minimally proliferative glial neoplasm. Sequencing revealed H3 K27M and an activating PTPN11 mutation. Serial imaging revealed slow tumor regrowth over a three year period which prompted a second resection. The recurrent tumor displayed a similar low grade-appearing histology and harbored the same H3 K27M and PTPN11 mutatio

Thoracic SMARCA4-deficient undifferentiated tumors (SMARCA4-UT) are aggressive neoplasms that most commonly occur in the mediastinum of male smokers. These tumors are characterized by an inactivating mutation of SMARCA4 resulting in loss of expression of brahma-related gene 1 (BRG1). These tumors can have a variable immunophenotype but in general have no or only focal keratin expression and characteristically lack expression of BRG1. Most patients have metastatic disease at time of presentation. Usually SMARCA4-UT progress or recur and the median survival of these patients is only approximatel

BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is used in the management of severe cardiopulmonary failure, but the indication in the oncologic population has not been clearly established. Among malignant neoplasms, thoracic neoplasms are unique in their potential direct impact on cardiopulmonary function. This study aimed to better define the role of ECMO for thoracic neoplasms.
METHODS: The Extracorporeal Life Support Organization registry was queried for patients older than 18 years with an International Classification of Diseases code of thoracic neoplasm during the past 2 decades

Intratracheal tumor is a rare tumor, accounting for only 2% of upper respiratory tract neoplasms. Its symptoms are similar to those of head and neck cancers, including coughing up blood, sore throat, and airway obstruction. The diagnosis of this disease is often based on the findings of fibrobronchoscopy or computed tomography (CT). Surgery remains the treatment of choice for tracheal tumor. In patients with benign neoplasms or if the tumors have limited involvement, fibrobronchoscopic resection of the tumor can be performed. For malignant tumors, however, radical resection is required. In the

To determine the relevance between MDCT features and anatomic-pathological basis of lymphoid neoplasm in cervico-thoracic junctional region, we performed a retrospective analysis of 69 patients with lymphoid neoplasm (lymphoma: 41 patients; metastatic tumor: 28 patients) involving the cervico-thoracic junctional region for MDCT features and distribution of lesions. The relevance between MDCT features and the anatomic-pathological basis in this region were evaluated. Among all the 41 patients with lymphoma, 29 with NHL (70.7%), 12 with HD (29.3%). The lymphomatous lymphadenopathy mainly located
