Gray mold disease caused by Botrytis cinerea infection is one of the major crop diseases. The application of environmental-friendly fungicides to control gray mold disease has been drawing great attention. Thymol, a natural compound, showed strong antifungal activity against Botrytis cinerea. We investigated the role of polyamine oxidase (PAO)-dependent hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production in thymol-inhibited B. cinerea growth by using physiological and biochemical approaches. The results showed that: 1) Thymol significantly inhibited the growth of B. cinerea, with remarkable increases in H2O2

The therapeutic effect of thymol against ethanol-induced injury has been reported. However, the mechanism by which thymol ameliorates ethanol-induced damage remains unclear. In this study, we found that thymol mitigated the fluctuations in GSH/GSSG ratio and Gpx4 mRNA abundance, and total cholesterol levels mediated by ethanol. Subsequently, differential expression analysis using RNA-sequencing identified 1748 and 2802 differentially expressed genes related to ethanol treatment and ethanol plus thymol treatment, respectively. Enrichment analysis revealed that peroxisome, glutathione metabolism

Naegleria fowleri, known as the brain-eating amoeba, is the pathogen parasite that causes primary amoebic meningoencephalitis. None of the currently available therapies are fully effective, mainly due to the inefficacy of pharmacotherapy. In this regard, natural products and related compounds represent a promising strategy for amoebicidal drug discovery. Herein, a series of eight monoterpene phenol derivatives of thymol bearing ester, carbonate, or carbamate moieties were prepared, and screened as potential amoebicidal agents on N. fowleri. The cytotoxicity of these compounds on murine macroph

This study introduces a novel approach to enhance the antibacterial properties of UIO-66 by incorporating both Thymol and ZnO nanoparticles within its framework which represents a significant advancement like exhibiting a synergistic antibacterial effect, providing a prolonged and controlled release, and mitigating cytotoxicity associated with the release of free ZnO nanoparticles by combining these two antimicrobial agents within a single, well-defined metal-organic framework. UIO-66 frameworks are investigated as carriers for the natural antimicrobial agent, Thymol, and ZnONPs offering a nov

Cryptosporidiosis constitutes a serious public health problem, notably in immunocompromised individuals, while effective therapeutic options remain limited. The objective of the present work was to evaluate the anticryptosporidial activity of thymol through in silico and in ovo approaches. Molecular docking assessed thymol interactions with four key Cryptosporidium targets involved in essential metabolic pathways: glycolysis [lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)], protein biosynthesis [lysyl-tRNA synthetase (LysRS)], nucleotide synthesis [inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH)], and calcium-depend

Cystic echinococcosis is a zoonotic disease caused by the larval stage of the cestode Echinococcus granulosus. The drugs commonly used against cystic echinococcosis are benzimidazoles. Unfortunately, 20%-40% of cases do not respond favorably to such chemotherapy. Consequently, the search of new therapeutic alternatives such as the use of traditional medicinal plants has been increased. The aim of the current experimental work was to investigate the chemoprophylactic and clinical efficacy of thymol on mice infected with E. granulosus metacestodes. Thymol (40 mg/kg) was administered under two di

Concentration-dependent effects of thymol on calcium handling were studied in canine and guinea pig cardiac preparations (Langendorff-perfused guinea pig hearts, canine ventricular trabeculae, canine sarcoplasmic reticular vesicles and single ryanodine receptors). Thymol induced a concentration-dependent negative inotropic action in both canine and guinea pig preparations (EC(50) = 297 +/- 12 microM in dog). However, low concentrations of thymol reduced intracellular calcium transients in guinea pig hearts without decreasing contractility. At higher concentrations both calcium transients and c

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a syndrome characterized by an accelerating decrease in renal function in a short time. Thymol is one of the main components of thyme species and has a variety of pharmacological effects. Here, we investigated whether thymol could ameliorate rhabdomyolysis (RM)-induced AKI and its related mechanism. Glycerol was used to induce RM-associated AKI in rats. Rats received thymol (20 mg/kg/day or 40 mg/kg/day) gavage 24 h before glycerol injection until 72 h after injection daily. Kidney injury was identified by measuring serum creatinine (Scr) and urea levels and by H&E

Alcoholic liver disease represents a serious threat to human health. In terms of safety and acceptability, thymol is widely used in or on foodstuffs to generate odour and taste. The present study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect and mechanism of thymol against ethanol-induced injury in liver cells. Here we found that thymol is an effective agent for reducing ethanol-induced reactive oxygen species production in mouse liver cells. Thymol improves ethanol-induced lipid accumulation, and this corresponded to altered DGAT2 mRNA expression levels. Metabolomics data analysis showed that t

Cryptococcus neoformans is a yeast fungus, which causes cryptococcosis, triggered by basidiospore inhalation and consequent dissemination to the central nervous system. In this study, we analyzed the antifungal action of thymol against 10 clinical strains of C. neoformans and analyzed the interaction of this monoterpene with sterols. The MICs of thymol ranged from 20 to 51 μg/ml, while the MFC values varied between 40 and 101 μg/ml. For the strains ICB-2601 and LM-39, in the presence of ergosterol, the MIC of thymol was 64 μg/ml, and in the presence of cholesterol, its MIC was 32 μg/ml. Based

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: Indo is widely one of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and one of the common toxic effects of this drug is hepatic failure. Thymol is a monoterpene phenol with many different pharmacological activities. However, up to now its hepatoprotective effects on Indo-induced gastric ulcer model in rats have not been explored yet.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty five Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into seven groups: control, ulcer control (30 mg/kg Indo), Indo + reference standard (50 mg/kg Rantidine), Indo + Thymol (75, 100, 250 and 500 mg/kg) groups. 10 minutes after the

A simple and sensitive spectrophotometric method was developed for the determination of trace amounts of sulfur dioxide. The method is based on the reaction of SO2 with a known excess of ICI as the oxidant. The unreacted ICI iodinates thymol blue under acidic conditions. The lambdamax of thymol blue is at 545 nm under acidic conditions, and on lodination lambdamax shifts to 430 nm. This shift results in a decrease in the absorbance at 545 nm. The amount of uniodinated thymol blue present depends on the concentration of unreacted ICI, which in turn depends on the SO2 concentration. The system o

BACKGROUND: Microglia-mediated inflammation is a critical factor in the progression of ischemic stroke. Consequently, mitigating excessive microglial activation represents a potential therapeutic strategy for ischemic injury. Thymol, a monophenol derived from plant essential oils, exhibits diverse beneficial biological activities, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, with demonstrated protective effects in various disease models. However, its specific effects on ischemic stroke and microglial inflammation remain unexplored.
METHODS: Rodent transient middle cerebral artery o

BACKGROUND: Acne is a common skin disorder that involves an infection inside the hair follicle, which is usually treated with antibiotics, resulting in unbalanced skin microbiota and microbial resistance. For this reason, we developed polymeric nanoparticles encapsulating thymol, a natural active compound with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. In this work, optimization physicochemical characterization, biopharmaceutical behavior and therapeutic efficacy of this novel nanostructured system were assessed.
RESULTS: Thymol NPs (TH-NP) resulted on suitable average particle size below 200

Thyme species are a good source of thymol and carvacrol, which play a key role in controlling diseases. For the first time, the expression patterns of γ-terpinene synthase (TPS2), CYP71D178, and CYP71D180 genes and the amount of phenolics compounds were evaluated in T. migricus and T. daenensis after different methyl jasmonate (MeJA) treatments. The highest thymol and carvacrol contents were observed in T. migricus (86.27%) and T. daenensis (17.87%) at MeJA 100 µM, which was consistent with the expression patterns of the three investigated genes. All species treated showed high total phenolic

Two phytochemicals, thymol and thymoquinone obtained from thymes (Thymus vulgaris L., Lamiaceae etc.) and Nagila Sativa seed, respectively. Both the phytochemicals show several biochemical activities like anticancer, antimicrobial etc. In this paper, we studied the affinities of thymol and thymoquinone towards calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) and protein (bovine serum albumin). Spectroscopic and molecular modelling studies revealed that both compounds have a high affinity toward both the receptors; DNA and protein. Both phytochemicals binds to the minor grooves of DNA and suitable pockets of protein.
