A thyroglossal duct cyst (TGDC) is a common embryological remnant that typically presents as an anterior neck mass; however, this malformation can occur in any adjacent area, including the tongue base (lingual type), along the migration path of the thyroid during embryonic development. Lingual TGDC is often quiescent until infection occurs. Supraglottitis or inflammation of the supraglottis, is a potentially life-threatening disease. Because of the anatomical proximity of lingual TGDC to the supraglottis, lingual TGDC infection might be related to a presentation of supraglottitis. A 49-year-ol

Xanthogranulomatous inflammation (XGI) is an uncommon destructive chronic inflammatory process mainly occurring in the kidney and gallbladder, characterized by the accumulation of foamy histiocytes, multinucleated giant cells (Touton type), cholesterol clefts and chronic inflammatory cells. The head and neck region is an uncommon site for XGI. This type of inflammatory reaction has been defined in branchial cleft cyst, salivary gland tumors following fine-needle aspiration biopsies, Rathke's cleft cyst in the pituitary gland, and colloid cyst in the 3rd ventricle. We present herein a unique ca

Lingual thyroglossal duct cysts are a rare form of thyroglossal cysts. We present two infants, 10 and 12 weeks of age, with midline intraoral cystic swellings stretching from the base of the tongue to the thyroid cartilage. Complete excision of the cysts by Sistrunk's procedure were carried out. Both infants are well on follow-up, at 6 months postoperatively. Their unique presentation with regard to age, location, and symptomatology is discussed. Lingual thyroglossal duct cysts large enough to cause dysphagia, stridor, respiratory distress, and failure to thrive in infants have not been previo

Thyroglossal cyst is the most common congenital neck mass and occurs in 7% of the population. They occur due to failure of thyroglossal duct to involute and atrophy thyroglossal duct cysts often occur in pediatric patients. Majority of them are found infrahyoid region. The purpose of the present study is to report our 5 year clinical experience of thyroglossal cysts in terms of clinical features and surgical findings with special emphasis on naked eye extend of patent thyroglossal duct when present. To the best of our knowledge this is first clinical study which has reported the extend of thyr

OBJECTIVES: Lingual thyroglossal duct cysts (TGDC) are rare and liable to be missed in a cursory clinical examination. This study aimed to report the details of lingual TGDC from the authors' series and review existing literature on the entity.
METHODS: A 12 year retrospective survey of all cases of thyroglossal duct anomalies managed at a tertiary teaching hospital was conducted to identify those with lingual TGDC. Their clinical presentation, investigations, diagnosis and management were analysed. Case series from anecdotal published English literature were critically reviewed with particul

Thyroglossal duct cysts (TGDCs) are developmental anomalies arising from the embryonic thyroglossal duct. They are commonly midline cervical structures associated with the hyoid bone. We report a 3.5-cm diameter isolated TGDC of the anterior mediastinum in a 65-year-old European woman who was treated by transcervical excision. The mass was limited to the mediastinum with a normal neck on computed tomographic scan and clinical examination. This is the second case of mediastinal TGDC known to be reported, and the oldest known age at presentation. The TGDC should be considered as an uncommon diff

Effective Treatment of thyroglossal cyst requires knowledge of its embryological background and anatomical disposition of the thyroglossal duct and its remnants. Equally important is the expertise of the surgeon to ensure total excision of the remnants of thyroglossal duct. We have operated 12 cases of both primary and recurrent thyroglossal cysts in the department of Surgery, BSMMU, Dhaka, Bangladesh from January 2001 to September 2008. We performed the Sistruk's operation on all the 12 cases. Under general anaesthesia the thyroglossal cyst, 10 mm of the central part of the body of the hyoid

In a review of 141 patients with thyroglossal duct cysts between 1961 and 1981, 28 patients were found to have surgical treatment for recurrent cysts and sinuses. Recurrent disease following surgical failure results in a high incidence of fistula formation. In the operative treatment of recurrent disease, all patients had a segment of hyoid bone excised. The dissection was extended to include a core of the base of the tongue in 20 of the 28 patients. There have been no surgical failures in this population of patients treated for recurrent thyroglossal duct cysts. We are currently treating pati

Double thyroglossal duct cysts (TDCs) are a very rare congenital malformation. Herein, we report a rare case of double TDCs, one below the hyoid bone and the other at the base of the tongue. Clinicians should be aware that TDCs can occur as multiple cystic lesions. Preoperative radiological examinations should be performed for an accurate diagnosis of double TDCs.

BACKGROUND: The recurrence rate of thyroglossal duct cysts removed by Sistrunk or other procedures is 4% and 50%, respectively. The aim of the present study was to explain the reasons for recurrence and misdiagnosis.
METHODS: Twenty-seven children underwent surgery for thyroglossal cysts and fistulas during 1989-2000. Age, sex, length of history, presentation, preoperative investigations, operative findings, histopathology of the lesion and length of excised hyoid bone, postoperative complications and length of follow-up were recorded. Statistical analysis was performed using Fisher's exact t

Thyroglossal duct cysts develop from a persistent portion of the thyroglossal tract and have been described as occurring anywhere from the base of the tongue to the manubrium. We present two patients who presented with a cystic thyroid nodule due to an intrathyroid thyroglossal duct cyst. A fine-needle aspiration biopsy was performed, which revealed benign squamous cells. Upon exploration, the first patient was found to have a 2-cm cyst within the thyroid isthmus, and in the second patient, a 1-cm cyst was found in the right thyroid lobe. Pathologic analysis revealed the cyst to be lined by a

Six patients with Baker's cysts, 3 with branchial cleft cysts, and 2 with thyroglossal duct cysts were treated with percutaneous aspiration and absolute ethanol sclerotherapy using a 7-French pigtail catheter. Cystography was performed before ethanol injection to confirm that there was no extravasation and that it was a monocystic lesion. One recurrence of a Baker's cyst was revealed in follow-up examinations, which ranged from 11 months to 36 months (mean, 25 months). The major complication of hypoesthesia of the popliteal region was observed in 1 patient treated for Baker's cyst. The results

BACKGROUND: Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital malformations of ventral foregut development, often with an intrathoracic location. Presentation at the cervical region is very rare.
CLINICAL CASE: We present the case of a 29-year-old female who demonstrated a 3-cm medial neck mass in relation to the hyoid cartilage. The mass was painless with a rubbery consistency, moving with tongue movements. Cervical ultrasonography and thyroid scan were suggestive of nonfunctioning thyroglossal cyst. Histopathological examination revealed the presence of a cervical bronchogenic cyst.
CONCLUSIONS: Cerv

Thyroglossal duct cysts (TDC) are the most common cervical cysts and are usually considered to be a benign embryonic malformation where the thyroglossal duct fails to obliterate. Parathyroid cysts (PTC) are a rare disease and may also result from malformation of the remnants of the third pharyngeal pouch. Although several sporadic cases of concurrent TDC with other head and neck malformations have been reported in the literature, a combination of TDC and PTC has never been reported. Here, we report the first case of a 35-year-old woman with a metachronous TDC and PTC. The embryologic origins o

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: This rare diagnosis highlights the importance of anatomical and embryological knowledge in the differential diagnosis of neck masses.
ABSTRACT: A 41-year-old woman was referred to the head and neck surgery department because of a large midline neck mass at the level of the hyoid bone that was diagnostic for functioning thyroid tissue in a totally ectopic location.

This retrospective study aimed to investigate clinical diagnostic and management characteristics of double thyroglossal duct cyst (TDC) cases. Seventy-eight patients diagnosed with TDCs who were admitted to the inpatient ward of the Department of Otolaryngology, Dalian Central Municipal Hospital from June 2008 to October 2021 were included in the study. Ultimately, 67 of these patients were diagnosed with single TDCs and 11 patients with double TDCs. Each patient underwent computed tomography and color doppler ultrasound imaging of their neck masses, thyroid color doppler ultrasound imaging, a

Thyroglossal duct cysts are typically benign and usually asymptomatic. Malignant transformation is uncommon. Intralaryngeal extension is rare and results in dysphonia or dyspnea. There is no literature nowadays reporting the thyroglossal duct cyst carcinoma combining the clinical features of intralaryngeal extension. The authors present a case of progressive hoarseness and midline neck mass for 2 years. The laryngoscope and computed tomography revealed a 6-cm thyroglossal duct cyst containing ectopic thyroid tissue with intralaryngeal extension and causing airway obstruction. Complete excision
