Sixteen cases of anaplasic thyroid carcinoma have been reviewed. In 13 cases out of 16, a diffuse invasion of one or both thyroid lobes and of the isthm associated with calcifications (50%) and necrosis (62%) was present. In 6 cases out of 8, CT Scan with contrast media injection has detected an extension into surrounding tissues. Twelve of the 16 patients presented cervical lymph nodes on the ultrasound examination and 4 of 8 patients presented mediastinal lymph nodes on the CT Scan. In 3 cases out of 16, the anaplasic carcinoma of the thyroid presented as a localized, hypoechoic nodule assoc

A 52-year-old woman presented with decreased vision, diplopia, esotropia, proptosis, and right orbital pain. Clinical examination was suspicious for an orbital mass and additionally revealed a thyroid gland mass. Imaging studies showed an enhancing mass within the right lateral rectus muscle and a heterogeneous mass in the left lobe of the thyroid gland. Excisional biopsies of the thyroid and orbital lesions were consistent with metastatic undifferentiated/anaplastic thyroid carcinoma. This represents the first reported case of undifferentiated/anaplastic thyroid carcinoma metastatic to the or

BACKGROUND/AIM: Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) is one of the most aggressive human malignancies, remaining generally incurable. Histone deacetylase (HDAC) seems to play a role in regulating transcription of genes involved in ATC, making HDAC inhibitors (HDACI) promising anticancer drugs for ATC. The purpose of this review was to evaluate the role of HDACIs in ATC treatment and describe the latest trends of current research on this field.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This literature review was performed using the MEDLINE database. The keywords/phrases were; thyroid cancer, anaplastic, HDAC, histone

This report concerns a 79-year-old woman with coexisting anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) and Graves' disease (GD). The patient was referred to our clinic because of palpitation and a palpable mass on the left side of her neck. Thyroid function tests showed hyperthyroidism with elevated thyroid-stimulating antibodies. Ultrasonography of the thyroid demonstrated an adenomatous nodule-like marcated nodule (27.6 x 26.5 x 36.4 mm) with cystic degeneration inside the left lobe. (123)I thyroid scintigraphic imaging showed a cold area corresponding to the nodule with continuous uptake in the remain

BACKGROUND: Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma is rare but is one of the most aggressive malignancies. Therefore, accurate diagnosis is important in order to provide appropriate therapy.
PURPOSE: To establish useful computed tomographic (CT) criteria for differentiating anaplastic carcinoma from other thyroid masses.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The CT scans of nine patients with anaplastic carcinomas were retrospectively reviewed and compared with those of 32 patients with papillary carcinomas (n = 12) or benign lesions (n = 20) exceeding a maximum diameter of 2.0 cm. Image analysis was performed accord

BACKGROUND: Beyond follicular-derived thyroid carcinomas, lymphomas, and metastatic disease, there are rare pathologies of the thyroid gland that represent a challenge. We report patients with unusual malignancies that mimic similar aggressive cancers.
METHODS: Retrospective case series.
RESULTS: Eight patients with aggressive thyroid tumors presented with clinical and radiographic features concerning for anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC). Three patients presumed to be diagnosed with Adamantinoma-like Ewing sarcoma (ALES), each harboring an EWSR1-FLI1 rearrangement. One patient with an enlargi

Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma is a rapidly progressive thyroid malignancy associated with extensive local invasion and limited survival. We describe the case of a 60-year-old man who developed new-onset dysphagia and voice changes in the setting of a thyroid mass. Initial cytology and core sampling were consistent with papillary thyroid carcinoma, yet the patient's accelerating compressive symptoms led to expedited total thyroidectomy. Surgical pathology ultimately demonstrated conventional papillary carcinoma with discrete foci of undifferentiated carcinoma within the same specimen. This case

BACKGROUND: The human pathogenic parvovirus B19 (B19) has recently been detected in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) tissues at a high frequency in two studies of a Chinese cohort. We wanted to extend these data to include another cohort and expand the thyroid tumor tissue types assessed. In particular, we were interested to find whether B19 also infects anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC), one of the most aggressive human cancers.
METHODS: Commercially available thyroid tumor tissue arrays were used to detect B19 capsid protein by immunohistochemistry in vari

Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is a rare, yet extremely aggressive form of thyroid cancer characterized by rapid growth and early metastasis to distant sites. Cardiac involvement is very uncommon and the presentation of cardiac metastasis in ATC can vary widely, highlighting the importance of early clinical recognition. We describe an extremely rare case of metastatic ATC that spread to the right ventricle.

Anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid is a highly aggressive neoplasm with quickly total course. It is characterized by an average survival of 4-12 months. It infiltrates precociously into the windpipe, oesophagus, vessels of the neck and gives distant metastases in 10-48% of cases. In 30.8 to 80% of cases, this carcinoma originates in an old multinodular goiter. The hypothesis has been also advanced that this neoplasm could derive from a pre-existent well-differentiated carcinoma. The improvement in diagnostic techniques (especially immunohistochemistry) allows a more correct definition of this

Sixteen consecutive patients with anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid were prospectively treated according to a combined regimen consisting of hyperfractionated radiotherapy, doxorubicin and debulking surgery. The radiotherapy was preoperatively administered to a target dose of 30 Gy in 3 weeks, and postoperatively to an additional dose of 16 Gy in 1.5 weeks. Radiotherapy was administered twice daily, 5 days a week, with a target dose of 1 Gy per fraction and with a minimum interval of 6 hours. A dose of 20 mg doxorubicin was administered intravenously 1 to 2 hours before the first radiotherap

A 52-year-old Hispanic woman with a history of metastatic thyroid carcinoma presented with left eye degeneration and a choroidal mass without evidence of orbital disease on neuroimaging. She underwent enucleation for a blind, painful eye. Histopathology demonstrated choroidal metastasis of thyroid carcinoma with a well-circumscribed episcleral nodule, consistent with extraocular tumor extension. The interdisciplinary team recommended expectant management. Three months later, she developed periorbital edema and discomfort with poor ocular prosthesis fit. Neuroimaging revealed a mass in the anop

BACKGROUND: Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) is one of the most lethal forms of cancer with a high mortality rate. Current guidelines support surgery for resectable ATC followed by external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) with or without chemotherapy. Treatment for those who are unresectable is palliative. Our goal was to examine first-line therapies as well as the role of genomic profiling in an effort better understand how to approach ATC.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study of ATC patients who were seen at our institution from January 2013 to October 2015. Median overall survival (OS) and

Since 1981, 20 patients with anaplastic giant cell carcinoma of the thyroid have been prospectively treated according to a combination regimen of chemotherapy and external beam radiation therapy. Two types of chemotherapy were used every 4 weeks, depending on the patient's age. For those younger than 65 years, a combination of doxorubicin (60 mg/m2) and cisplatin (90 mg/m2) was given, and for older patients mitoxantrone (14 mg/m2) was used. Radiotherapy was carried out between Day 10 and Day 20 of the first four cycles of chemotherapy. It delivered 17.5 Gy in 7 fractions to the neck and the su

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the integrin pattern in the normal thyroid gland and in different pathological disorders including malignant tumors, because the aggressiveness of several malignant tumors correlates with alterations in the expression of one or more integrins.
DESIGN: We examined the expression of integrins and E-cadherin immunohistochemically in a large and well-defined sample of normal and pathological human thyroid tissue.
METHODS: Cryosections of 58 thyroid tissue specimens from normal tissue, thyrotoxicosis, nodular goiter, oxyphilic adenoma, follicular adenoma, follicular carcino
