We present a case report of a thyroid fracture after a sneezing episode, with odynophagia, dysphonia, and neck pain. The examination showed oedema at the right vocal cord and haematoma at the right false vocal cord. An anterior thyroid fracture without displacement, and a subcutaneous emphysema could be seen on the CT. Thyroid fracture because of this aetiology is most exceptional; only 1 similar case report has been described in the literature.

BACKGROUND: Topological features of the larynx and hypopharynx may be depicted during sonographic examination of the neck, although ultrasound is seen of minor diagnostic importance. The varying extend of thyroid cartilage ossification appears to be the major limiting factor. We intended to assess the sonographic accessability of laryngeal structures with high end resolution ultrasound devices.
METHODS AND PATIENTS: We examined 101 patients endoscopically and by ultrasound. Normal laryngeal findings and pathologies were examined and analysed considering limitations by thyroid cartilage ossifi

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the potential indications of thyroid alar cartilage (TAC) graft in the paediatric laryngotracheal reconstruction (LTR) population based on observations obtained in a case series of 27 consecutive infants referred to our tertiary care center.
METHODS: Thyroid alar cartilage grafting was performed for limited Myer grade II and grade III subglottic stenosis requiring a single-stage laryngoplasty and for laryngeal enlargement after translaryngotracheal resection of endolaryngeal tumors. The evolution of the grafted area was evaluated prospectively during endoscopic follow-u

Brown tumor of the larynx is extremely rare. We describe a patient with long-standing primary hyperparathyroidism and severe skeletal involvement associated with brown tumors of the axial and appendicular skeleton and of the thyroid cartilage. Ossification of the laryngeal skeleton may explain the presence of this process in this unusual location.

In 1976, Noyek observed that the thyroid cartilage framework of the larynx could be imaged by diagnostic ultrasound; the image appeared uniquely independent of the presence or absence of calcification. It was suggested that ultrasound, with its simple, nonroentgenographic, noninvasive features, might permit screening detection of thyroid cartilage destruction. It might, therefore, give direction to better computed tomographic (CT) imaging, and, specifically, more effectively identify T4 laryngeal cancer. Since that time, with improving generations of ultrasound transducers, more than 130 clini

Thorough evaluation of the hyoid bone, thyroid cartilage, and cricoid cartilage is critical in trauma interpretation as fractures of the neck block are commonly associated with manual strangulation, suicidal hanging, and direct blunt force trauma. The frequency of fractures to laryngohyoid structures is differentially reported in the literature. Between 2019 and 2021, the neck blocks from 56 suicidal hangings were subjected to an anthropological analysis for trauma. The protocol for examining these cases involved radiographs prior to removal of the soft tissues, followed by removal of all soft

Non-traumatic laryngeal injuries are unusual occasions. In the medical literature we found only six reports of cases that had laryngeal injury after sneezing. We report a case of a 34-year-old man diagnosed with thyroid cartilage fracture after a strong sneeze. In physical examination, edema and hematoma were seen in the right vocal cord and the right band. Computed tomography scan revealed an anterior thyroid cartilage fracture without separation. Antibiotics and steroids were administered. This is a very rare entity and the seventh case reported in the literature. Ear Nose Throat specialist

Five cases are presented with a strained voice quality due to a unique underlying cause: thyroid cartilage cysts. Laryngoscopy and radiological images show antero-medial displacement of both vestibular and vocal fold(s). Swelling in the ala of the thyroid cartilage results in a pear-shaped lumen. These cysts were marsupialized with CO2 laser, fluid emerged, and histological biopsies confirmed cartilaginous cysts. Postoperatively, all cases report largely reduced or completely resolved vocal complaints, with a consistent follow-up of 2 years. Together with previous publications, an overview of

In forensic practice, laryngeal lesions are of particular interest for the pathologist, as they may sign foul play. We report the case of a decedent, whose body was found in an advanced state of putrefaction, at the bottom of a ledge, after a one-month disappearance. The face and neck were skeletised. The autopsy found multiple traumatic injuries. The hyoid bone was separated from the other laryngeal structures and seemed to be macroscopically normal. However, the thyroid cartilage had a thin notch at the base of the right upper horn. The nature of this notch was determined by microscopic exam

PURPOSE: To determine the pullout strength of adaption screws in laryngeal cartilage and its relationship to drill hole and screw diameter.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Screw pullout strength in human cadaver thyroid cartilage was measured using a load cell. Screw sizes of 1.3, 1.5, and 2.0 mm were tested using drill hole diameters of 0.76, 1.1, and 1.5 mm.
RESULTS: Maximum pullout strength was achieved using a drill hole diameter of 0.76 mm and a 1.5 mm screw. Pullout strength for this combination was 27.5 N.
CONCLUSION: Adaption screws can be used in thyroid cartilage but pullout strengths will

Larynges from 17 patients with DiGeorge syndrome (DGS) and from 14 patients with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) (11 non-DGS and 3 possible but unproven DGS) were dissected, measured, and compared to a control population of comparable body length. The patients with DGS and the 3 patients with TOF suspected of having DGS showed the following: small thyroid cartilages with increased anterior angle, abnormally short superior cornua, low ratio of mean superior cornual length to distance between superior cornual tips, and delayed time of maximal rate of increase in superior cornual length relative to inc

Multiple myeloma involving the thyroid cartilage is a very uncommon disease entity. Only 10 cases have been reported in the international literature to date and as such it constitutes a rare and challenging diagnosis to make. We report the case of a 63-year-old man with a background of malignant melanoma and multiple myeloma both of which were in remission at the time of presentation. The patient presented with hoarseness and a large neck mass that turned out to be an extramedullary deposit of his previously treated multiple myeloma indicating disease relapse. The differential diagnosis of a m

Black thyroid is characterized by a rare pigment change observed almost exclusively in patients taking minocycline. We present the case of a 72-year-old man diagnosed with T3N3bM0 stage IVB hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma who had been taking minocycline for approximately 18 months as a treatment for prurigo chronica multiformis. Initial treatment consisted of total pharyngolaryngoesophagectomy, bilateral neck dissection, total thyroidectomy, pharyngeal reconstruction using a free jejunal autograft, and creation of a permanent tracheostoma. During surgery, black discoloration of the thyr

The study was conducted to quantify laryngeal cartilage matrix composition and to investigate its relationship with cartilage shape in a mouse model. A sample of 30 mice (CD-1 mouse, Mus musculus) from five age groups (postnatal Days 2, 21, 90, 365, and 720) were used. Three-dimensional mouse laryngeal thyroid cartilage reconstructions were generated from contrast-enhanced micro-computed tomography (CT) image stacks. Cartilage matrix composition was estimated as Hounsfield units (HU). HU were determined by overlaying 3D reconstructions as masks on micro-CT image stacks and then measuring the a

INTRODUCTION: Accuracy of thyroid cartilage fenestration during Montgomery thyroplasty (MTIS) is considered a key success factor. The primary aim of the study was to retrospectively evaluate the accuracy of fenestration. Furthermore, recent publications indicate a possible discrepancy in MTIS voice outcomes related to gender. The secondary aim of the study was to investigate whether the fenestration accuracy could explain this discrepancy.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Study was performed by virtually drawing the fenestration on a 3D CT scan as proposed by the MTIS's instructions for use (the "expecte

Chronic subglottic stenosis continues to be a difficult management problem. Conservative management with bougienage, laser therapy, mitomycin-C, and/or steroid injections frequently fails. Definitive resection of the subglottis with thyrotracheal anastomosis has increased in popularity, but carries significant operative risks and postoperative complications. In the past 9 years, we have used a modification of a technique to successfully widen the subglottis, which we previously published 20 years ago. By a laryngocricotracheofissure approach, the cricoid cartilage is split vertically, both ant

Chronic cough is a common troublesome symptom in otolaryngology head and neck surgery practice. In rare cases, chronic cough may be related to anatomical abnormalities. In this article, we report the history of a 64-year-old female with a chronic course due to a curved superior cornu of the thyroid cartilage and related irritation of the laryngeal superior nerve. The cough was atypical and resolved after the surgical resection of the abnormal cornu. There was no recurrence at 9 months post-surgery. The findings of the present case report highlight the need to explore the laryngeal anatomy in p
