Effects of rose pollen and nectar on body size and ovarian development of Frankliniella occidentalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae).

Western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), is an omnivorous pest feeding on plant tissues and floral resources, including pollen and nectar, and can consume mite eggs. Its growth and reproduction are strongly influenced by diet quality. Compared with rose petals alone, a standardized whole-flower diet contains reproductive organs and therefore provides additional floral resources. In this study, a standardized whole-flower diet, rose petals, and kidney bean leaves as a host-plant control were used to investigate whether differences in floral resource availability affect thri

The influence of crop and leaf position on thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) oviposition in cotton, soybean, and peanut seedlings.

Thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) can injure seedling cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), and peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) crops in the southern United States. The planting window and timing of thrips infestations into these crops overlap in the region, but thrips preference for oviposition has not been investigated. We evaluated thrips preference for cotton, soybean, and peanut by counting eggs, immatures, and adults at the cotyledon to 4 true leaf stages. Peanut was significantly more attractive for oviposition than cotton and soybean. Oviposition in cotton was s

Morphology of the Female Reproductive System of the Soybean Thrips, Neohydatothrips variabilis (Beach, 1896) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae).

Soybean thrips (Neohydatothrips variabilis) are an important phytophagous vector of the widely recognized Soybean vein necrosis orthotospovirus (SVNV). Understanding the egg-laying behavior of these thrips could aid in developing strategies for the management of the vector and virus. In this study, we described the egg-laying behavior of N. variabilis and reconstructed the three-dimensional morphology of the female terminalia by using serial block-face scanning electron microscopy (SBFSEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The female reproductive system consists of two panoistic o

Synergism of Adjuvants Mixed With Spinetoram for the Management of Bean Flower Thrips, Megalurothrips usitatus (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) in Cowpeas.

The bean flower thrips, Megalurothrips usitatus (Bagnall) is an economically important insect pest of cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp in south China. Spinetoram is a newly available commercial active ingredient in the spinosyn mode of action group of insecticides that has been recommended for thrips management in China. In this study, the toxicity and efficacy of spinetoram for controlling M. usitatus were evaluated and compared to six other conventional insecticides. In addition, the synergistic effects of adjuvants (Silwet 806, Silwet 618, AgroSpred 910, and AgroSpred Prime) mixed with s

Evaluation of Soybean for Resistance to Neohyadatothrips variabilis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) Noninfected and Infected With Soybean Vein Necrosis Virus.

Soybean vein necrosis virus (SVNV) was first identified in Arkansas and Tennessee in 2008 and is now known to be widespread in the United States and Canada. Multiple species of thrips transmit this and other tospoviruses with Neohydatothrips variabilis (Beach) (soybean thrips) cited as the most efficient vector for SVNV. In this study, 18 soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., genotypes were evaluated in four experiments by infesting plants with noninfected and SVNV-infected thrips using choice and no-choice assays. In both choice experiments with noninfected and SVNV-infected thrips, the lowest num

The Oviposition Site Selection and Photoperiod Regulation of Megalurothrips usitatus (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) in Different Cowpea Plant Parts.

Megalurothrips usitatus (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is a key destructive pest of cowpea, resulting in considerable economic losses. Understanding M. usitatus's oviposition preference in various plant parts under distinct photoperiod treatments is important for its success in pest control. We placed mated females with cowpea stems, leaves and pods in rearing boxes. After 24 h, eggs were counted after basic fuchsin staining. Hatched nymphs were recorded over 7 days. Morphology and histology were examined by microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. A statistical comparison on the number of egg-

Effect of Spinosad Resistance on Transmission of Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus by the Western Flower Thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae).

Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) is transmitted by Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) in a persistent-propagative manner. We previously observed significant results in terms of feeding behavior of spinosad-susceptible (Ivf03) and -resistant (Spin-R) strains of F. occidentalis using electrical penetration graph. TSWV transmission by the two strains was compared in the present study. The results showed that the titer of TSWV-N RNA (a part of S RNA of TSWV and encoding the nucleocapsid protein) in Ivf03 and Spin-R strains was not significantly different after a 48-h inoculation access period.

Insecticide-mediated changes in the population and toxicity of the thrips species, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) and Thrips flavus (Schrank) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae).

Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) and Thrips flavus (Schrank) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) cause considerable damage to agricultural crops. In this study, we investigated the variations in the population density of these 2 thrips species in 2 sites (Dabai and Heilongtan) with different insecticide application levels. Bioassays were performed to determine the susceptibility of both thrips species to imidacloprid, abamectin, and high-bromine cyhalothrin in summer. The results showed that the F. occidentalis species were more abundant in Dabai than in Heilongtan during both winter and summer. Th

Standardized Field Trials in Cotton and Bioassays to Evaluate Resistance of Tobacco Thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) to Insecticides in the Southern United States.

Foliar-applied insecticide treatments may be necessary to manage thrips in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) under severe infestations or when at-planting insecticide seed treatments do not provide satisfactory protection. The most common foliar-applied insecticide is acephate. Field observations in Tennessee suggest that the performance of acephate has declined. Thus, the first objective was to perform leaf-dip bioassays to assess if tobacco thrips, Frankliniella fusca (Hinds) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), in cotton production regions have evolved resistance to foliar-applied insecticides. Routine insecticide regimes restructure flower-inhabiting thrips on star fruit: suppression of Megalurothrips typicus, resilience of Thrips levatus (Thysanoptera: Thripidae).

Routine agrochemical regimes are pervasive in tropical perennial crops, yet their ecological consequences remain poorly understood. We examined how nonselective insecticide exposure, arising from routine crop protection, shapes species composition, phenology, and population regulation of 2 co-occurring thrips, Megalurothrips typicus Bagnall and Thrips levatus Bhatti (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), in star fruit (Averrhoa carambola L.). We compared a sprayed commercial farm with an unsprayed research farm, combining weekly inflorescence sampling with soil emergence trapping, to track flower-infestin

A novel mitochondrial genome architecture in thrips (Insecta: Thysanoptera): extreme size asymmetry among chromosomes and possible recent control region duplication.

BACKGROUND: Multipartite mitochondrial genomes are very rare in animals but have been found previously in two insect orders with highly rearranged genomes, the Phthiraptera (parasitic lice), and the Psocoptera (booklice/barklice). RESULTS: We provide the first report of a multipartite mitochondrial genome architecture in a third order with highly rearranged genomes: Thysanoptera (thrips). We sequenced the complete mitochondrial genomes of two divergent members of the Scirtothrips dorsalis cryptic species complex. The East Asia 1 species has the single circular chromosome common to animals whi

Novel nanoparticle formulations improve the tolerance of Metarhizium brunneum to ultraviolet radiation and biocontrol efficacy against Frankliniella fusca (Thysanoptera: Thripidae).

Oil-in-water Pickering emulsions stabilized by titania (TiO2) nanoparticles have shown potential to increase ultraviolet (UV) protection in the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium brunneum. In this study, we expand the findings by comparing several nanoparticle-based formulations for UV tolerance, and investigating the impact of protective formulations in a biocontrol setting. The fungal viability in colony forming units (CFUs) and virulence to the 2nd instar tobacco thrips, Frankliniella fusca, were assessed. Under UV-A (380-nm), a titania-based formulation was effective in protecting the fun

Unlocking species identity: geometric morphometrics of head and thorax shapes in invasive and non-invasive quarantine-significant thrips (Thysanoptera: Terebrantia).

This study use landmark based geometric morphometrics (GM) of the head and the thorax on eight species of thrips of the species-rich genus Thrips. Among the selected species, four were classified as common and not significant, while four were identified as quarantine-significant and agriculturally important in the USA. The results indicate the potential for using both sets of landmarks, which, in some cases, were complementary. When one set did not reveal significant differences in shape, the other provided valuable insights. The geometric morphometric analysis of the selected landmarks reveal

Comprehensive Identification and Male-Biased Expression Analysis of Odorant-Binding Protein Genes in the Hawaiian Flower Thrips, Thrips hawaiiensis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae).

Olfaction is essential for key insect behaviors, such as host-seeking and mating, and is initiated by odorant-binding proteins (OBPs), which bind and transport hydrophobic odors. Thrips hawaiiensis is a major pest that infests the flowers of numerous horticultural crops, yet its chemosensory mechanisms remain poorly understood. Now, the availability of its genome assembly allows us to address this gap. To this end, we performed a comprehensive exploration and comparative analysis of its OBP genes. Our genome-wide analysis identified a total of 12 OBP genes in T. hawaiiensis, whereas the repert

From gene to function: GABA receptor-associated protein (GABARAP) interacts with and potentiates the GABA receptor (RDL) in Megalurothrips usitatus (Bagnall) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae).

The GABA receptor-associated protein (GABARAP), a member of the autophagy-related protein 8 (ATG8) family, regulates autophagy and GABAA receptor trafficking in mammals, yet its functional role in insects remains completely unexplored. The bean flower thrips, Megalurothrips usitatus, is a globally invasive pest whose control is increasingly challenged by widespread insecticide resistance. Understanding novel regulatory mechanisms in its nervous system, particularly those involving the insecticidal target GABA receptor (RDL), is therefore crucial. Spatiotemporal expression profiling revealed th
