[Research progress on artificial meniscus implants].

Meniscus injury has been one of the most common knee injuries in current society. The research on artificial meniscus implants as substitutes in meniscus reconstruction therapy has become global focus in order to solve clinical problems such as irreparable meniscus injury and symptoms after full or partial meniscectomy. At present, researches on artificial meniscus implants mainly focus on biodegradable meniscus scaffolds and non-biodegradable meniscus substitutes. Although the commercialized meniscal implants, such as CMI ®, Actifit ® and NUsurface ®, have been applied in the clinical, none o

The Epidemiology of Meniscus Injury.

Meniscus surgery is one of the most commonly performed orthopedic procedures worldwide. Modifiable risk factors for meniscus injury include body mass index, participation in athletics and occupation. Nonmodifiable risk factors include age, sex, lower extremity alignment, discoid meniscus, ligamentous laxity, and biconcave tibial plateau. Conditions commonly associated with meniscal injury are osteoarthritis, anterior cruciate ligament injury, and tibial plateau fractures. Tear type and location vary by patient age and functional status. Surgical management of meniscus injury is typically cost-

Avulsion Fracture of the Tibial Tuberosity Requiring Meniscal Repair: A Case Report.

Avulsion fractures of the tibial tuberosity are uncommon injuries. A 16-year-old male sustained injuries to his right knee joint after jumping from stairs and landed on his feet with his right knee forced into flexion. X-ray photographs showed a type III avulsion fracture of the tibial tuberosity. On the next day of the injury, open reduction and internal fixation, followed by arthroscopy was performed. The fracture fragment was fixed with three 5.0mm cannulated cancellous screws. The torn anterior portion of medial meniscus was repaired with 3-0 Polydioxanone (PDS) using outside-in sutures an

Tibial Tuberosity Fracture Combined With Entrapped Meniscus.

Tibial tubercle fractures are rare injuries that occur in adolescents most commonly during athletic activities. Fractures are typically identified by physical examination and radiographs alone; however, this often underestimates the extent of injury. Soft tissue injuries are often associated with tibial tubercle fractures and can be missed by plain radiographs. The authors report on a patient whose meniscus was entrapped in the fracture site during the initial operative reduction and fixation. Magnetic resonance imaging performed 1 year after continued symptoms revealed that a tear of the ante

[Posterior meniscus root tears].

Meniscus root tears are radial tears in the region of the posterior insertion zones. Medial root injuries usually occur in individuals > 50 years of age without adequate trauma and are associated with obesity and varus deformities. The root lesion leads to a loss of ring tension, which results in extrusion of the meniscus and a strong increase in joint pressure that is biomechanically equivalent to a complete meniscectomy. When indicating arthroscopic transosseous refixation of the medial root lesion, factors such as accompanying cartilage damage, osteoarthritis, obesity and varus deformity mu

In vitro method to quantify and visualize mechanical wear in human meniscus subjected to joint loading.

The mechanical wear and tear of soft connective tissue from repetitive joint loading is a primary factor in degenerative joint disease, and therefore methods are needed to accurately characterize wear in joint structures. Here, we evaluate the accuracy of using a structured light 3D optical scanning system and modeling software to quantify and visualize volume loss in whole human meniscus subjected to in vitro joint loading. Using 3D printed meniscus replicas with known wear volumes, we determined that this novel imaging method has a mean accuracy of approximately 13 mm3, corresponding to a me

Lateral femoral notch sign and posterolateral tibial plateau fractures and their associated injuries in the setting of an anterior cruciate ligament rupture.

INTRODUCTION: ACL injury is one of the most common injuries of the knee joint in sports. As accompanying osseous injuries of the ACL rupture a femoral impression the so-called lateral femoral notch sign and a posterolateral fracture of the tibial plateau are described. However, frequency, concomitant ligament injuries and when and how to treat these combined injuries are not clear. There is still a lack of understanding with which ligamentous concomitant injuries besides the anterior cruciate ligament injury these bony injuries are associated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred fifteen MRI sc

[Relevance of meniscus loss for the progression of osteoarthritis and treatment options for early arthritis].

Meniscal tears are still one of the most frequent lesions in the knee joint. The relevance of meniscus loss for the development of osteoarthritis is undisputed. Meniscus repair, replacement and transplantation play an important role in the treatment of early arthritis, especially when they are a part of a master plan including alignment correction, stabilization and cartilage surgery, if needed. Scientific data show evidence concerning the protection of osteoarthritis, even though a lack of studies including comparison groups has to be admitted.

Declining trends in arthroscopic meniscus surgery and other arthroscopic knee procedures in Denmark: a nationwide register-based study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A doubling of arthroscopic meniscal procedures was observed in Denmark from 2000 to 2011, but arthroscopic meniscal procedures for degenerative meniscal tears are no longer recommended. We performed an updated investigation of Danish meniscal procedure trends in the private and public healthcare sectors in Denmark from 2006 to 2018, including trends for other arthroscopic knee procedures. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We extracted data on the 5 most commonly registered arthroscopic knee procedures (diagnostic arthroscopy, meniscal surgery, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruc

Are Outcomes of Acute Meniscus Root Tear Repair Better Than Debridement or Nonoperative Management? A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Meniscus root tears (MRTs) are defined as radial tears within 1 cm of the meniscus root insertion or an avulsion of the meniscus root itself. They lead to altered joint loading because of the failure to convert axial (compressive) loads into hoop stresses. Untreated MRTs can result in altered joint biomechanics and accelerated articular cartilage degeneration and the development of osteoarthritis (OA), yet optimal management remains unclear. PURPOSE: To review treatment outcomes after acute MRTs by surgical repair, debridement, meniscectomy, or nonoperative treatment. DESIGN: Sys

Pediatric meniscus morphology varies with age: a cadaveric study.

PURPOSE: In adolescent patients, meniscal tear injury can occur either in isolation (e.g., discoid lateral meniscus tears) or in association with other traumatic injuries including tibial eminence fracture or ACL tear. Damage to meniscal integrity has been shown to increase contact pressure in articular cartilage, increasing risk of early onset osteoarthritis. In symptomatic patients failing conservative management, surgical intervention via meniscus repair or meniscus transplant is indicated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the radial dimensions of pediatric menisci throughout devel

Generating New Meniscus Therapies via Recent Breakthroughs in Development, Model Systems, and Clinical Diagnostics.

Over 850,000 surgeries are performed to treat meniscal injuries each year in the United States. Even with repair, patients are likely to develop osteoarthritis (OA) within the next two decades. There is a pressing clinical need to improve meniscal repair procedures to restore tissue function and prevent joint degeneration later in life. Here we present a review of recently published articles (2020-2024) spanning basic science, translational, and clinical studies to highlight new advances in meniscus research across development, animal models, finite element models, and clinical interventions.
