The long-term effect on the tibiofemoral compartment of the knee joint of comminuted fractures of the patella.

We have studied the long-term effect of comminuted fractures of the patella with particular reference to the development of degenerative changes in the tibiofemoral joint. Degenerative changes which could convincingly be ascribed to the original injury were found in only one case, but we stress that the numbers are small, and that carefull search sould be made at operation for damage to the femoral condyles.

Biomechanical predictors of patellofemoral and tibiofemoral joint loads during running: A cross-sectional study.

Clinicians lack accurate means to estimate patellofemoral (PFJ) and tibiofemoral (TFJ) kinetics outside the lab. We sought to identify biomechanical gait predictors of PFJ and TFJ kinetics in male and female runners. We used an idealized approach with 3-D motion capture via factors that are readily measured using clinical tools, i.e. 2-D video and wearable devices. Participants (n = 106; 53 females, 53 males) ran on an instrumented treadmill while kinematics, kinetics and temporospatial data were sampled. PFJ and TFJ contact forces were estimated via a musculoskeletal model. De-biased LASSO an

Knee Joint Line Obliquity Causes Tibiofemoral Subluxation That Alters Contact Areas and Meniscal Loading.

BACKGROUND: Little scientific evidence is available regarding the effect of knee joint line obliquity (JLO) before and after coronal realignment osteotomy. HYPOTHESES: Higher JLO would lead to abnormal relative position of the femur on the tibia, a shift of the joint contact areas, and elevated joint contact pressures. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study. METHODS: 10 fresh-frozen human cadaveric knees (age, 59 ± 5 years) were axially loaded to 1500 N in a materials testing machine with the joint line tilted 0°, 4°, 8°, and 12° varus ("downhill" medially) and valgus, at 0° and 20° of

Patellofemoral and tibiofemoral joint loading during a single-leg forward hop following ACL reconstruction.

Altered biomechanics are frequently observed following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Yet, little is known about knee-joint loading, particularly in the patellofemoral-joint, despite patellofemoral-joint osteoarthritis commonly occurring post-ACLR. This study compared knee-joint reaction forces and impulses during the landing phase of a single-leg forward hop in the reconstructed knee of people 12-24 months post-ACLR and uninjured controls. Experimental marker data and ground forces for 66 participants with ACLR (28 ± 6 years, 78 ± 15 kg) and 33 uninjured controls (26 ± 5 ye

Clinical results of the Oxford knee. Surface arthroplasty of the tibiofemoral joint with a meniscal bearing prosthesis.

The Oxford method of knee arthroplasty replaces the femoral condyles with convex spherical metal components and relines the tibial plateaus with flat metal components. Free meniscal bearings of polyethylene, spherically concave above and flat below, lie between the fixed metal components, held in place by their geometry and ligamentous tension. Advantages of the design include: congruity of the articulating surfaces; unconstrained tibiofemoral movement; preservation of all the ligaments with facility to tension them accurately from a range of bearing thicknesses; minimal bone excision; applica

Model for in-vivo estimation of stiffness of tibiofemoral joint using MR imaging and FEM analysis.

BACKGROUND: Appropriate structural and material properties are essential for finite-element-modeling (FEM). In knee FEM, structural information could extract through 3D-imaging, but the individual subject's tissue material properties are inaccessible. PURPOSE: The current study's purpose was to develop a methodology to estimate the subject-specific stiffness of the tibiofemoral joint using finite-element-analysis (FEA) and MRI data of knee joint with and without load. METHODS: In this study, six Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) datasets were acquired from 3 healthy volunteers with axially lo

Tibiofemoral rotation alignment in the normal knee joints among Chinese adults: a CT analysis.

BACKGROUND: Consensus on tibial rotation in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) remains controversial. The present study aimed to investigate the closest anatomical reference to surgical epicondylar axis (SEA) among 10 tibial markers in Chinese adults. METHODS: This study included examination of 122 normal lower extremities. Briefly, 10 axes were drawn on the axial sections: transverse axis of tibia (TAT), axis of medial edge of patellar tendon (MEPT), axis of medial 1/3 of patellar tendon attachment (M1/3), Akagi line, Insall line, axis of medial border of tibial tubercle (MBTT), and axis of anter

Radiographic progression of knee osteoarthritis is associated with MRI abnormalities in both the patellofemoral and tibiofemoral joint.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate patterns of MRI abnormalities in the patellofemoral (PFJ) and tibiofemoral joint (TFJ) and their association with radiographic progression, using hypothesis free analyses. DESIGN: 205 patients from the GARP study with symptomatic OA at multiple sites (mean age 60 years, 80% woman, median BMI 26 kg/m(2)), underwent knee MRI at baseline. Cartilage damage, osteophytes, cysts, bone marrow lesions (BMLs) and effusion/synovitis were scored according to a validated scoring method. Baseline and 6-year TFJ and PFJ radiographs were scored (0-3) for JSN and osteophytes accordin

Opposing effects of foot-loading strategies on patellofemoral and tibiofemoral joint compression forces during walking.

BACKGROUND: Patellofemoral (PF) and tibiofemoral (TF) joint loading during gait are strongly influenced by sagittal-plane mechanics and muscle force distribution. Individuals with knee disorders often modify foot-loading patterns, yet the effects of such strategies on PF and TF joint compression forces (PFCF and TFCF) during walking remain unclear. RESEARCH QUESTION: How do forefoot, preferred, and rearfoot weight-bearing walking strategies differentially affect PFCF, TFCF, and knee muscle forces during the stance phase of gait? METHODS: Twenty-eight healthy adults performed forefoot, prefer

Relationship between isokinetic strength and tibiofemoral joint space width changes after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: It has been hypothesized that quadriceps muscle weakness is directly associated with the onset and progression of posttraumatic osteoarthritis after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and reconstruction (ACLR). This relationship, however, has not been studied with a prospective approach that includes the use of tibiofemoral joint space width difference (JSW-D) measurements to characterize the onset of posttraumatic osteoarthritis before the clinical manifestation of the disease. PURPOSE: To assess the relationship between thigh muscle strength and JSW-D at presurgery baseline

Neuromuscular fatigue and tibiofemoral joint biomechanics when transitioning from non-weight bearing to weight bearing.

CONTEXT: Fatigue is suggested to be a risk factor for anterior cruciate ligament injury. Fatiguing exercise can affect neuromuscular control and laxity of the knee joint, which may render the knee less able to resist externally applied loads. Few authors have examined the effects of fatiguing exercise on knee biomechanics during the in vivo transition of the knee from non-weight bearing to weight bearing, the time when anterior cruciate ligament injury likely occurs. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of fatiguing exercise on tibiofemoral joint biomechanics during the transition from non-we

Tibiofemoral joint contact area and pressure after single- and double-bundle anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the tibiofemoral contact area and pressure after single-bundle (SB) and double-bundle (DB) anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction by use of 2 femoral and 2 tibial tunnels in intact cadaveric knees. METHODS: Tibiofemoral contact area and mean and maximum pressures were measured by pressure-sensitive film (Fujifilm, Valhalla, NY) inserted between the tibia and femur. The knee was subjected to a 1,000-N axial load by use of a uniaxial testing machine at 0 degrees , 15 degrees , 30 degrees , and 45 degrees of flexion. Three conditions wer

Computational investigation of the time-dependent contact behaviour of the human tibiofemoral joint under body weight.

The knee joint is one of the most common sites for osteoarthritis, the onset and progression of which are believed to relate to the mechanical environment of cartilage. To understand this environment, it is necessary to take into account the complex biphasic contact interactions of the cartilage and menisci. In this study, the time-dependent contact behaviour of an intact and a meniscectomized human tibiofemoral joint was characterized under body weight using a computational model. Good agreement in the contact area and femoral displacement under static loads were found between model predictio

Tibiofemoral joint kinematics of the anterior cruciate ligament-reconstructed knee during a single-legged hop landing.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal 3-dimensional tibiofemoral joint kinematics have been identified in anterior cruciate ligament-reconstructed knees during functional gait tasks, which is suggested to directly affect risk of knee osteoarthritis. However, the extent to which similar high-risk abnormalities are present during more demanding maneuvers, such as single-legged hopping, is largely unknown. HYPOTHESIS: When performing a single-legged forward hop landing, the reconstructed knee will demonstrate altered sagittal, frontal, and transverse plane kinematics compared with the contralateral limb. Curcumin (Curcuma longa) Supplementation Improves Tibiofemoral Joint Outcomes in Low-Dose Prednisone-Treated Experimental Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that primarily affects synovial joints, mainly in women. This study analyzed the effects of curcumin supplementation combined with prednisone on functionality, lipoperoxidation, inflammatory, and histological characteristics of the tibiofemoral joint and periarticular structures. For this, thirty 18-month-old female Wistar rats were distributed into six groups: control, arthritis, arthritis + curcumin, arthritis + prednisone low-dose, arthritis + prednisone high-dose, and arthritis + prednisone low-dose supplemented with curcumin. Rheumatoid arthri

Gastrocnemius Muscle Injury Is the Condition to Induce Cartilage Degeneration of the Rabbit Tibiofemoral Joint: A New Perspective.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The knee osteoarthritis is a common joint disease that causes pain and inconvenience. Clinically, patients with knee osteoarthritis often have response points on the gastrocnemius. Gastrocnemius plays an essential role in stabilizing joints and changing gait and pace, which also has a close relationship with the knee joint. The objective of this study is to determine changes in the tibiofemoral joint after medial and lateral gastrocnemius injury. Rabbits were divided into a medial gastrocnemius injury group, a lateral gastrocnemius injury group, and a control group with two intervals: 6 and 8

The effect of femoral component rotation on the kinematics of the tibiofemoral and patellofemoral joints after total knee arthroplasty.

PURPOSE: Complications after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) often involve the patellofemoral joint, and problems with patellar maltracking or lateral instability have sometimes been addressed by external rotation of the femoral component. This work sought to measure the changes of knee kinematics caused by TKA and then to optimise the restoration of both the patellofemoral and tibiofemoral joint kinematics, by variation of femoral component internal-external rotation. METHODS: The kinematics of the patella and tibia were measured in eight cadaveric knees during active extension motion. This wa
