The facial tics.

The abnormal movements of the facial muscles are classified and the diagnosis and treatment considered in light of 22 cases of hemifacial spasm. Forms of treatment which give only temporary cessation of spasm and require complex and unpleasant treatment to be oft repeated are seldom tolerated for long by the patient. Permanent cure of spasm can only be obtained when the facial nerve or its branch to the muscle is permanently divided or the muscle itself excised. Neurotomy as practised by German (1942) and Scoville (1955) has not been found satisfactory in the present series. Neuro-anastomosis

Functional tics and tic-like behaviors.

Functional tics and tic-like behaviors belong to the wide spectrum of functional movement disorders. Until the early 2010s, functional tic disorders were rather uncommon in the differential diagnosis of tics, and only few cases describing their features had been published. However, over the past 10 years there has been a steady increase in the frequency of these cases that peaked throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. On the one hand, the rise in functional tic cases created new challenges of diagnosis and treatment. At the same time, it also pushed the field forward to delineate helpful clinical c

Acute tic exacerbations: Tic status, malignant Tourette syndrome, tic attacks, tic fits, and other misfits.

Acute tic exacerbations in Tourette syndrome (TS) and other tic disorders are influenced by biologic, psychologic, and social factors. Different terms have been used to describe acute tic exacerbations, including tic status, malignant TS, tic attacks, and tic fits. This review traces the evolution of our understanding of acute tic exacerbations and examines the emerging clinical constructs, highlighting the overlapping features and diagnostic ambiguities of such episodes. Common features include repetitive movements lasting from minutes to hours that are rarely suppressible, cause significant

Clinical neurophysiology of tics.

Clinical neurophysiology constitutes a relevant tool for clinicians in movement disorders since it expands their characterization beyond clinically observable features and supports their diagnosis. Although the field has yet to identify a specific neurophysiologic marker for the diagnosis of tics, neurophysiology serves as a valuable tool for clinicians in differentiating tics from other hyperkinetic disorders. Beside diagnosis, recent years have witnessed the emergence of two primary domains in which neurophysiology plays a pivotal role in the realm of tic disorders: investigating the pathoph

[Tics and Tourette Syndrome].

Tics disorders and Tourette syndrome (TS) are neurodevelopmental conditions characterized by motor and/or vocal tics with onset in childhood. Their clinical presentation is heterogeneous and fluctuating over time, with exacerbations related to emotional, environmental, and medical factors. Diagnosis is clinical and based on medical history and neurological examination, following DSM-5-TR criteria, with ancillary testing rarely required. The prevalence of TS is estimated at 0.7%, while transient tic disorders affect up to 10% of children. The natural history is generally favorable, with symptom

Tics and Tourette's syndrome.

Tics and Tourette's syndrome are common hyperkinetic movement disorders seen mostly in the pediatric age group. Tics are defined as sudden, rapid, recurrent, nonrhythmic motor movements or vocalization, generally preceded by urge. Tourette's syndrome is defined as the presence of both motor and phonic tics for more than 1 year in patients with onset less than 18 years old. Most of these hyperkinetic movement disorders improve in adulthood. This review emphasizes the clinical pearls in the diagnosis and distinguishing it from other movement disorders. The treatment ranges from behavioral therap

Tics and tourette syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome is a common neuropsychiatric disorder spectrum with tics as the defining feature. Comorbidities such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and autism spectrum disorder often complicate clinical presentation. Their recognition is paramount for the introduction of efficient treatment strategies to promote healthy development and good quality of life. Here, knowledge on the movement disorder of tics, the spectrum of associated comorbidities, and the list of differential diagnoses of tic disorders are summarized. Also, an account

[Psychiatric aspects of tics].

BACKGROUND: Tics, the most serious form of which is the Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS), belong to the group of hyperkinetic movement disorders. The most extreme forms of these movement disorders are often characterised by psychiatric comorbidity. AIM: To acquaint the reader with the psychiatric aspects of tics and with the role played by comorbidities in OCD and ADHD patients who also suffer from tics. METHOD: Recent new insights in psychiatric aspects of GTS are described. RESULTS: Tics in GTS have marked psychological characteristics because of their relatively capricious nature, th

Tics and Tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome is a childhood onset neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by multiple motor and vocal tics. Although many youth experience attenuation or even remission of tics in adolescence and young adulthood, some individuals experience persistent tics, which can be debilitating or disabling. Most patients also have 1 or more psychiatric comorbid disorders, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or obsessive-compulsive disorder. Treatment is multimodal, including both pharmacotherapy and cognitive-behavioral treatment, and requires disentanglement of tics and the comorbid

Functional neuroanatomy of tics.

The therapeutic success of haloperidol in the treatment of Tourette syndrome (TS) put an end to the discussion about a "hysteric" or "neurotic" origin of TS. The cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical circuit has been identified as an underlying neurobiological correlate of TS. In this review we explore the main findings of structural alterations in TS including cortical areas, basal ganglia, hippocampus, amygdala, midbrain, and cerebellum. Based on the structural changes we examine the functional pattern described by the findings of fMRI and (15)O-PET/(18)FDG PET investigations. From the neuroimagi

Tics and developmental stuttering.

BACKGROUND: Developmental stuttering affects 1% of the population but its cause remains unclear. Recent PET studies of metabolism in the central nervous system suggest that it may be related to dysfunction in the basal ganglia or its connections with regions of the cortex associated with speech and motor control. OBJECTIVE: To determine the presence and characteristics of involuntary movements (IMs) in people who stutter and to investigate the hypothesis that these movements may be of a very similar nature to the IMs seen in patients with movement disorders due to basal ganglia dysfunction.

Tics and its disorders.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is familial neuropsychiatric disorder that is characterized by motor and phonic tics that begin in childhood. Once thought of as a rare and debilitating disorder, in the last decade new scientific knowledge suggests that TS and related tic disorders are more common and less debilitating for the majority of individuals. Evidence points toward a spectrum of TS symptomatology that extends beyond the tics disorder to probably include obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and mood disorders. Tourette syndrome and its differential diagnosis a

[Tics and Tourette's syndrome].

This article is reviewing current knowledge of Tourette's syndrome (TS) including its clinical picture, pathophysiology, genetics and treatment. The semiology of TS is characterized with various types of motor and vocal tics and associated pathological behaviors as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Recent pathophysiological and genetic data confirm organic character of the condition. Treatment strategies are proposed with regard to prevailing type of symptoms.

Tics through Tourette's syndrome.

The concept of Tourette's syndrome as a bizarre and disabling disorder has changed with greater appreciation that this is a spectrum of symptoms and degrees of severity. A thorough understanding of the latest concepts regarding recognition and management is essential for the neuroscience nurse to play a meaningful role as counselor, educator and clinician in the care of these patients and families.
