Auditory time perception impairment in children with developmental dyscalculia.

Developmental dyscalculia (DD) is a specific learning disability which prevents children from acquiring adequate numerical and arithmetical competences. We investigated whether difficulties in children with DD spread beyond the numerical domain and impact also their ability to perceive time. A group of 37 children/adolescent with and without DD were tested with an auditory categorization task measuring time perception thresholds in the sub-second (0.25-1 s) and supra-second (0.75-3 s) ranges. Results showed that auditory time perception was strongly impaired in children with DD at both time sc

Mechanically Induced Motor Tremors Disrupt the Perception of Time.

Contemporary research has begun to show a strong relationship between movements and the perception of time. More specifically, concurrent movements serve to both bias and enhance time estimates. To explain these effects, we recently proposed a mechanism by which movements provide a secondary channel for estimating duration that is combined optimally with sensory estimates. However, a critical test of this framework is that by introducing "noise" into movements, sensory estimates of time should similarly become noisier. To accomplish this, we had human participants move a robotic arm while esti

Residents' perception of skill decay during dedicated research time.

BACKGROUND: Surgery residents may take years away from clinical responsibilities for dedicated research time. As part of a longitudinal project, the study aim was to investigate residents' perceptions of clinical skill reduction during dedicated research time. Our hypothesis was that residents would perceive a greater potential reduction in skill during research time for procedures they were less confident in performing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Surgical residents engaged in dedicated research training at multiple training programs participated in four simulated procedures: urinary catheterizat

Dissociable neuroanatomical correlates of subsecond and suprasecond time perception.

The ability to estimate durations varies across individuals. Although previous studies have reported that individual differences in perceptual skills and cognitive capacities are reflected in brain structures, it remains unknown whether timing abilities are also reflected in the brain anatomy. Here, we show that individual differences in the ability to estimate subsecond and suprasecond durations correlate with gray matter (GM) volume in different parts of cortical and subcortical areas. Better ability to discriminate subsecond durations was associated with a larger GM volume in the bilateral

Moving time: the influence of action on duration perception.

Perceiving the sensory consequences of action accurately is essential for appropriate interaction with our physical and social environments. Prediction mechanisms are considered necessary for fine-tuned sensory control of action, yet paradoxically may distort perception. Here, we examine this paradox by addressing how movement influences the perceived duration of sensory outcomes congruent with action. Experiment 1 required participants to make judgments about the duration of vibrations applied to a moving or stationary finger. In Experiments 2 and 3, participants judged observed finger moveme

Music, rhythm, rise time perception and developmental dyslexia: perception of musical meter predicts reading and phonology.

INTRODUCTION: Rhythm organises musical events into patterns and forms, and rhythm perception in music is usually studied by using metrical tasks. Metrical structure also plays an organisational function in the phonology of language, via speech prosody, and there is evidence for rhythmic perceptual difficulties in developmental dyslexia. Here we investigate the hypothesis that the accurate perception of musical metrical structure is related to basic auditory perception of rise time, and also to phonological and literacy development in children. METHODS: A battery of behavioural tasks was devis

How background music rhythm modulates time perception: Evidence from the estimation of collision time.

Time-to-collision (TTC) estimation, the ability to predict when a moving object will reach a designated position, represents a critical skill for motor behavior regulation. However, although existing studies have demonstrated significant effects of object velocity and distance on TTC estimation, the role of auditory rhythm remains poorly understood. This study systematically investigated the influence of background musical rhythm on TTC estimation through two experiments (manipulating velocity and distance variables) combined with Bayesian modeling. The results demonstrated that ‌fast-tempo mu

Time Perception and the Experience of Time When Immersed in an Altered Sensory Environment.

The notion that exposure to a monotonous sensory environment could elicit reports indicating aberrant subjective experience and altered time perception is the impetus for the present report. Research has looked at the influence of exposure to such environments on time perception, reporting that the greater the environmental variation, the shorter is the time estimation obtained by the method of production. Most conditions for creating an altered sensory environment, however, have not facilitated an immersive experience, one that directly impacts both time perception and subjective experience.

Subjective time perception in dementia: a behavioural and neuroanatomical analysis.

Subjective time perception-the modulation of elapsed clock time by sensory, homeostatic and psychological factors-is fundamental to how we experience the world. People with Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia often exhibit clinically relevant symptoms of altered temporal awareness but these are poorly understood. Here we addressed this issue in a cross-sectional, case-control study of 60 patients representing all major Alzheimer (n = 24) and frontotemporal (n = 36) syndromes [mean age 68.8 (range 48-77 years); 28% female] and 24 cognitively well age-matched controls [age 69.4 (6.5)

Time perception in astronauts on board the International Space Station.

We perceive the environment through an elaborate mental representation based on a constant integration of sensory inputs, knowledge, and expectations. Previous studies of astronauts on board the International Space Station have shown that the mental representation of space, such as the perception of object size, distance, and depth, is altered in orbit. Because the mental representations of space and time have some overlap in neural networks, we hypothesized that perception of time would also be affected by spaceflight. Ten astronauts were tested before, during, and after a 6-8-month spaceflig

Time perception changes in stroke patients: A systematic literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Time perception comprises the subjective experience of passing of time and of the duration of an event. Although already described in some neurological and psychiatric conditions, there is a paucity of details regarding this neurocognitive change in stroke patients. We aimed to describe time perception dysfunction in stroke patient. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of the literature in Pubmed, PsycInfo and EMBASE including manuscripts from their inception until December 2020. We collected data regarding the type of time perception that was detected, type of stroke, most

Effect of Exercise-Related Factors on the Perception of Time.

The concept of time whether considered through the lenses of physics or physiology is a relative measure. Alterations in time perception can have serious implications in sport, fitness and work. Accurate perception of time is an important skill with many time constrained sports (i.e., basketball, North American football, tennis, gymnastics, figure skating, ice hockey, and others), and work environments (i.e., workers who need to synchronize their actions such as police and military). In addition, time distortions may play a role in exercise adherence. Individuals may be disinclined to continue

Wearable Real-Time Skateboard Trick Visualization and Its Community Perception.

Motion visualization is an attractive way to provide support for a range of recreational and competitive sports. In skateboarding, sensor technology in particular can help visualization systems capture the motion of athletes to provide relevant information to athletes, judges, and spectators. This article describes the authors' proposed application of a 9D inertial-magnetic measurement unit (IMMU) based real-time trick classification and visualization system. It also reports on a survey they conducted with skateboarders that asked about the usefulness, acceptance, and future ideas of such a sy

Time perception during emotional reviviscence: distinct contributions of duration estimation and passage-of-time judgment.

Affective states are known to distort time perception, yet most studies rely on externally presented stimuli and rarely distinguish between duration estimation (DE) and passage-of-time judgment (PoTj). Across both studies, PoTj showed more robust affective modulation than DE, whereas DE appeared to be less sensitive to affective context. Participants relived positive and negative autobiographical emotions during a fixed 76-s interval. Study 1 revealed that positive emotions were associated with shorter duration estimates and a faster subjective passage of time than negative emotions, while bor

Hierarchical Consistency Learning for Test-Time Adaptation in Camouflage Perception.

Camouflaged object detection (COD) aims to localize targets that exhibit minimal perceptual differences from backgrounds through physical attributes. Existing methods, constrained by the static train-then-freeze paradigm, suffer from domain rigidity and annotation dependency, limiting their adaptability to scene variations and unseen camouflage patterns. To overcome these, we propose the hierarchical consistency learning (HCL) framework, which integrates test-time adaptation for dynamic representation recalibration. Specifically, we design the hierarchical representation reconstruction (HRR) t

Disturbances in time perception in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: The experience of time and the temporal order of external and internal events is essential for humans. Impairments in the experience of time have long been discussed in relation to main psychiatric disorders, but rarely in relation to obsessive-compulsive disorder. This pilot study therefore investigated impairments in the experience of time in terms of time perception and time awareness in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder, as well as possible neurobiological correlates. METHOD: Twenty patients (11 men and 9 women, mean age 43.3, SD = 14.3) with an ICD-10 diagnosis of o

The role of physical and cognitive effort on time perception.

Action and perception are intertwined, and time perception is not an exception to this general principle. In line with that, we have recently reported that the perceived duration of visual stimuli is extended while running. Here we tested the nature of this phenomenon by contrasting two possibilities: one related to physiological changes induced by physical effort (e.g. heart rate, temperature, arousal), and one related to cognitive alterations linked to motor control. To this aim we compared the direction and magnitude of the temporal bias induced by running to that prompted by other two cond

Perception of Disordered Voice: Reaction Time, Accuracy, and Neural Processing.

UNLABELLED: In many professional settings, such as emergency dispatch, aviation, healthcare, and the military, voice is used to deliver short, precise instructions. Voice disorders can affect both professional voice users and listeners, altering speech perception, listening effort, and task performance. This study investigated the impact of disordered voice on behavioral performance (reaction time and accuracy) and neural processing (as measured by event-related potentials, ERPs) in short spoken instructions. METHODS: Forty-three right-handed, healthy, Latvian-speaking university students (21

Time perception and delay discounting in the FMR1 knockout rat.

There is substantial evidence for timing (time perception) abnormalities related to developmental disabilities, particularly autism spectrum disorder. These findings have been reported in humans and nonhuman preclinical models. Our research objective was to extend that work to a genetic knockout (KO) model of fragile X/developmental disability, the FMR1 KO rat. We also sought to test delay discounting in the model and assess potential relations between timing and choice behavior. Consistent with previous human and nonhuman work, we found reduced timing precision in the FMR1 KO rats. We also di
