Prevalence of tinea capitis and tinea pedis in Barcelona schoolchildren.

BACKGROUND: Although dermatophytoses can appear at any age, some types are particularly prevalent in children. There are no prior data on the prevalence of tinea capitis and tinea pedis in Barcelona, Spain. To identify the prevalence of tinea in school children in the area with the highest immigrant population in this city, a cross-sectional study was performed. A second objective was to identify the etiologic agent to study the possibility of the introduction of foreign dermatophyte species and to evaluate the possibility of encountering healthy hosts. METHODS: From October 2002 until June 2

An update on tinea capitis in children.

Tinea capitis presents a significant public health care challenge due to its contagious nature, and potential long-term consequences if unrecognized and untreated. This review explores the prevalence, risk factors, diagnostic methods, prevention strategies, impact on quality of life, and treatment options for pediatric tinea capitis. Epidemiological analysis spanning from 1990 to 1993 and 2020 to 2023 reveals prevalence patterns of pediatric tinea capitis influenced by geographic, demographic, and environmental factors. Notably, Trichophyton species is most prevalent in North America; however,

Management of tinea capitis in childhood.

Tinea capitis (TC) is a common dermatophyte infection affecting primarily prepubertal children. The causative pathogens belong to only two genera: Trichophyton and Microsporum. Although there is a great local variation in the epidemiology of TC worldwide, T. tonsurans is currently the most common cause of TC with M. canis second. Even though there is an emerging number of anthropophilic scalp infections, M. canis remains the predominant causative organism in many countries of the Mediterranean basin, the most important dermatophyte carriers being stray cats and dogs as well as pet puppies, kit

Consensus-based Guideline on tinea capitis.

The consensus-based guideline developed under the auspices of the German Dermatological Society (DDG) is intended to provide physicians with a structured framework for clinical decision-making in the management of patients with tinea capitis and to contribute to improved diagnostic accuracy, treatment adherence, and prevention. Tinea capitis is a dermatophyte-induced infection of the scalp that predominantly affects children and represents a common dermatological condition worldwide. In recent years, a marked shift in the epidemiology of causative dermatophytes has been observed in Europe, dri

Tinea capitis mimicking tufted hair folliculitis.

We report a case of tinea capitis mimicking tufted hair folliculitis in a 56-year-old European man, who presented with a 4-year history of pain and erythema in an area of scarring alopecia of the occipital scalp, with scales and tufts of hair emerging from individual follicles. Histological examination showed hair plugging, and a dense perifollicular infiltrate of plasma cells, lymphocytes, and neutrophils. There was widespread scarring and fibrosis. Bacterial cultures were negative for Staphylococcus aureus, but fungal cultures and periodic-acid-Schiff stain were positive for Trichophyton ton

Tinea capitis: no incision nor excision.

Tinea capitis is a fungal infection of the scalp and hair shaft that mainly affects prepubescent children. Its clinical aspects range from a mild noninflammatory infection resembling seborrheic dermatitis to a highly inflammatory swelling reaction (kerion). We report the cases of 2 children who underwent surgical treatment of their kerions under general anesthesia. One lesion had been incised and the other excised. This inappropriate treatment made conservative treatment after surgery more difficult. We recommend that abscesslike lesions on the scalps of children be carefully investigated by s

Recalcitrant tinea capitis in WHIM syndrome.

WHIM syndrome is a rare primary immunodeficiency typically caused by autosomal dominant activating mutations in the CXCR4 gene. WHIM refers to warts, hypogammaglobulinaemia, infections and myelokathexis, which are the primary phenotypes of the syndrome. Here we describe a case of tinea capitis in a patient with WHIM syndrome that was unresponsive to multiple systemic antifungal treatments for over 10 years. The patient's recalcitrant tinea infection was ultimately cured after treatment with posaconazole. These findings suggest that the CXCR4 defects in WHIM syndrome may confer susceptibility t

Trichoscopy of Tinea Capitis: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: An increased incidence of tinea capitis has been observed over the last few decades. Trichoscopy is a non-invasive, in-office method helpful in establishing the correct diagnosis in patients with hair loss and inflammatory hair disorders. The objective was to review and analyze current data on the trichoscopy of tinea capitis. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was conducted using the PubMed, EBSCO and Scopus databases. The search terms included 'tinea capitis' combined with 'trichoscopy', 'dermatoscopy', 'dermoscopy', 'videodermatoscopy' or 'videodermoscopy'. RESUL

[Tinea capitis in children is an overlooked disease].

In this review, we discuss tinea capitis, which is a disease most prevalent in children and caused by dermatophytes infecting the hair and scalp. The clinical presentation varies from scaling and alopecia to inflammatory lesions with pain and pruritus. Treatment includes systemic and topical antifungal agents. Due to the aetiological shift in pathogens from zoophilic dermatophytes to anthropophilic dermatophytes, spread of the infection may occur more easily. Therefore, early disease detection and treatment of asymptomatic carriers is important to avoid epidemics.

Tinea Capitis Masquerading as Basal Cell Carcinoma.

A 52-year-old white man with alcoholic cirrhosis presented to the Mohs surgery clinic with a 1-month history of tender "bumps" located diffusely on his scalp. Two biopsies performed at an outside institution were read as "basal cell carcinoma" and "actinic keratosis." The patient was scheduled for a large excision of the scalp for presumed multiple nodules of basal cell carcinoma and desired a second opinion from our Mohs surgery clinic.

Tinea capitis: epidemiology, diagnosis and management strategies.

Tinea capitis is a common superficial fungal infection of the scalp in children, particularly in those of African descent. Trichophyton tonsuran, an anthropophilic dermatophyte, is responsible for the majority of cases in North America. The clinical presentations are variable and include: (i) a "seborrheic" form that is scaling, often without noticeable hair loss; (ii) a pustular, crusted pattern, either localized or more diffuse; (iii) a "black dot" variety characterized by small black dots within areas of alopecia; (iv) a kerion, which is an inflammatory mass; and (v) a scaly, annular patch.

Guidelines for the management of tinea capitis in children.

Practice guidelines for the treatment of tinea capitis (TC) from the European Society for Pediatric Dermatology are presented. Tinea capitis always requires systemic treatment because topical antifungal agents do not penetrate the hair follicle. Topical treatment is only used as adjuvant therapy to systemic antifungals. The newer oral antifungal agents including terbinafine, itraconazole, and fluconazole appear to have efficacy rates and potential adverse effects similar to those of griseofulvin in children with TC caused by Trichophyton species, while requiring a much shorter duration of trea

The assessment and management of tinea capitis in children.

Tinea capitis is an infection of the scalp and hair shaft caused by dermatophyte fungi. It is seen in all age groups, and the incidence seems to be on the rise in North America. Clinical diagnosis of tinea capitis can be challenging, as symptoms can vary from minimal pruritus with no hair loss, to severe tenderness, purulence, and permanent scarring in inflammatory kerion lesions. The diagnosis of tinea capitis must be confirmed in the laboratory by using fungal stains or obtaining cultures, since treatment may be prolonged with potential side effects. Systemic therapy is needed because topica

Topical treatment of tinea capitis in a neonate.

Tinea capitis is the most common fungal skin infection in children. Given that this infection invades the hair shaft and the pilosebaceous unit, systemic antifungal therapy is the gold standard of treatment. Despite the neonate's increased susceptibility to infections, tinea capitis is rare in this population. We present the case of a 16-day-old infant with tinea capitis caused by Microsporum canis and effectively treated with topical bifonazole 1%.
