Topical antifungal treatments for tinea cruris and tinea corporis.

BACKGROUND: Tinea infections are fungal infections of the skin caused by dermatophytes. It is estimated that 10% to 20% of the world population is affected by fungal skin infections. Sites of infection vary according to geographical location, the organism involved, and environmental and cultural differences. Both tinea corporis, also referred to as 'ringworm' and tinea cruris or 'jock itch' are conditions frequently seen by primary care doctors and dermatologists. The diagnosis can be made on clinical appearance and can be confirmed by microscopy or culture. A wide range of topical antifungal

Deep Learning for Diagnosis of Tinea Corporis and Tinea Cruris.

BACKGROUND: Tinea corporis and tinea cruris are frequently misdiagnosed, and studies utilizing deep learning for their diagnosis remain scarce. OBJECTIVES: This study primarily aimed to develop a deep learning model trained on images from diverse clinical settings to distinguish dermatophytosis from non-dermatophytosis. A secondary objective was to compare its diagnostic performance with that of physicians. METHODS: This retrospective diagnostic study analyzed clinical images of dermatophytosis (tinea corporis/cruris) and non-dermatophytosis (eczema, psoriasis, and lichen planus). Dermatophy

Management of tinea corporis, tinea cruris, and tinea pedis: A comprehensive review.

The prevalence of superficial mycotic infection worldwide is 20-25% of which dermatophytes are the most common agents. Recent developments in understanding the pathophysiology of dermatophytosis have confirmed the central role of cell-mediated immunity in countering these infections. Hence, a lack of delayed hypersensitivity reaction in presence of a positive immediate hypersensitivity (IH) response to trichophytin antigen points toward the chronicity of disease. Diagnosis, though essentially clinical should be confirmed by laboratory-based investigations. Several new techniques such as polyme

Annular lupus vulgaris mimicking tinea cruris.

Cutaneous tuberculosis is an infrequent form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. It is often clinically and histopathologically confused with various cutaneous disorders. A 36-year-old man attended our clinic with slowly progressive, asymptomatic, annular skin lesions on both the thighs and buttocks for 10 years. He consulted with many physicians and was improperly treated with an oral antifungal agent for several months under the diagnosis of tinea cruris, but no resolution of his condition was observed. A diagnosis of lupus vulgaris was made based on the histopathologic examination and the polym

Tinea cruris in routine urology practice.

INTRODUCTION: Tinea cruris is almost exclusively a male dermatophytosis. This infection is also sexually transmitted, and may cause epidemics in public areas such as common bathing facilities, dormitories and among military recruits. It has been aimed to investigate the prevalence and the causative agents of tinea cruris and tinea pedis in patients who were admitted to the Department of Urology with various pathologies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Direct microscopy and cultures of the epithelial scrapings were performed to identify the causative agent in patients who were admitted to the Departmen

Tinea cruris epidemiology (São Paulo, Brazil).

In order to determine the epidemiology of tinea cruris in São Paulo, Brazil, an investigation was carried out from April 95 to March 1997. A total of 2000 individuals were studied, of whom 105 were suspected of having tinea cruris infection. Direct microscopy and/or culture were positive in 66 [62.8%] of the cases. Erythematous-scale plaques and erythematous-liquenificated plaques were the most frequently found clinical types. T. rubrum was the prevalent dermatophyte in 90% of the cases, followed by T. tonsurans (6%) and T. mentagrophytes (4%).

Topical antifungal drugs in the treatment of tinea pedis, tinea cruris, and tinea corporis.

Topical treatment of fungal infections took a step forward in the 1960s with the introduction of biologically active agents with specific antifungal mechanisms of action. Most modern broad-spectrum antifungal agents act by blocking specific steps in the synthesis of fungal cell membrane components. The broad-spectrum topical antifungal drugs now in use include the imidazoles (e.g. clotrimazole and miconazole), a pyridone-ethanolamine salt, dimethylmorpholines, and the newest class, the allylamines (e.g., naftifine and terbinafine). The topical allylamines have been shown in comparative studies

Treatment of tinea cruris with topical terbinafine.

Twenty-three patients were enrolled in a randomized, double-blind trial of terbinafine 1% cream versus its vehicle (placebo) in the treatment of tinea cruris. One patient had a negative initial culture and was excluded, and two patients were dropouts, one because of poor study compliance (terbinafine) and one because of an adverse event (placebo). Twenty patients were examined for efficacy of treatment (9 terbinafine-treated, 11 placebo-treated). Both groups were similar in age, sex, duration of disease, prior therapy, size and location of lesion, infecting organism, and predisposing factors.

The frequency of tinea pedis in patients with tinea cruris in Tehran, Iran.

The objective of this study is to define the frequency of tinea pedis in patients with tinea cruris. Sixty patients (46 males and 14 females) entered our study. Epidermophyton floccosum was the most frequently isolated fungus in tinea cruris. Four patients (6.4%) had concurrent tinea pedis and the only isolate from the foot was Trichophyton mentagrophytes. In three of them, the corresponding dermatophyte in the groin was E. floccosum.

Clotrimazole vs haloprogin treatment of tinea cruris.

A study to compare the efficacy of clotrimazole 1% solution with that of haloprogin 1% solution for the treatment of tinea cruris was conducted among military personnel on active duty in a hot, humid climate. Eighty patients with documented dermatophyte infections were treated with the topical antifungal agents. Analysis of the response to treatment for 14 days demonstrated that clotrimazole was significantly more effective clinically and mycologically than haloprogin. With no further treatment, significantly more patients treated with clotrimazole remained free of the disease four weeks later

Efficacy and safety of butenafine in superficial dermatophytoses (tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis).

Superficial dermatophytoses of skin are very common infections seen in clinical practice. Besides topical imidazoles, triazoles and allylamines, topical butenafine (a benzylamine derivative) is a novel agent with broad antifungal activity. One hundred and eleven patients with tinea infections were enrolled in this multicentric, randomised, single-blind non-comparative study, which involved application of butenafine (1%) cream in tinea pedis (4 weeks) and tinea cruris and tinea corporis (2 weeks) cases. The results showed that butenafine causes rapid resolution of signs and symptoms (erythema i
