Tissue adhesives for closure of surgical incisions.

BACKGROUND: Sutures, staples and adhesive tapes are the traditional methods of wound closure, whilst tissue adhesives have entered clinical practice more recently. Closure of wounds with sutures enables meticulous closure, but they may show tissue reactivity and can require removal. Tissue adhesives offer the advantages of no risk of needlestick injury and no requirement to remove sutures later. Tissue adhesives have been used primarily in emergency rooms but this review looks at the use of tissue adhesives in the operating room where surgeons are increasingly using these for the closure of su

[An update on the use of tissue adhesives in ophthalmology].

Tissue adhesives have a long history of use in almost all surgical disciplines, both as an alternative and a complement to sutures. Nevertheless, ophthalmologists have restricted knowledge of their potential applications; consequently, tissue adhesives have been underutilized so far. This review discusses the most relevant clinical and experimental advances in the use of tissue adhesives in ophthalmology and details the characteristics and properties of the glues. Among the currently available adhesives, synthetic glues are mainly represented by cyanoacrylates and biologic glues by fibrin-base

Tissue adhesives in corneal cataract incisions.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to provide an updated overview of the peer-reviewed literature on the use of a variety of tissue adhesives used to seal corneal incisions in cataract surgery. We will review recent publications on the complications, safety profile, and efficacy of currently available and investigational tissue adhesives used for corneal incisions. We will also briefly review the relationship between clear corneal incisions and postoperative endophthalmitis. RECENT FINDINGS: Tissue adhesives have recently been investigated as alternate methods for corneal wound

The use of tissue adhesive in corneal perforations.

Eighty patients with either corneal perforation or impending perforation were treated with the application of tissue adhesive that remained in place on the average of 50 days. Forty-four percent of these cases healed with the application of glue alone. Complications occurred in nine patients (11%). Two developed marked increase in intraocular pressure that was controlled with antiglaucoma medications and seven developed corneal infiltrates. Five of the infiltrates were culture-proven bacterial infections occurring on the average of 73 days after gluing. The relationships between diagnosis, dur

Human peritoneal adhesions show evidence of tissue remodeling and markers of angiogenesis.

PURPOSE: This study was designed to investigate the vascular structure and angiogenic activity of human peritoneal adhesions. METHODS: Adhesions were collected from patients undergoing laparotomy (n=32). Histologic features were documented and the distribution of mature and immature vascular markers were determined by immunolocalization and quantified by image analysis. The three-dimensional organization of blood vessels was investigated by confocal microscopy. Expression of vascular endothelial growth factor A, its receptor flk-1, and proliferating cell nuclear antigen were assessed by immun

Prevention of adhesions by bioresorbable tissue barrier following laparoscopic intraabdominal mesh insertion.

Intraabdominal adhesions represent a significant problem because of the morbidity associated with adhesive disease, including small bowel obstruction, difficulties in reoperative surgery, and possibly chronic pain. Coating solution of sodium hyaluronate (Sepracoat; Genzyme Production-Surgical Products, Cambridge, MA) was studied in New Zealand white rabbits to determine its potential role for prevention of postoperative adhesions following laparoscopic intraabdominal mesh insertion. A 2-cm polypropylene mesh was inserted laparoscopically to the left iliac fossa and fixed to anterior abdominal

Organ transudation dictates in vivo adhesion to tissues.

Fluids wetting organ surfaces are a major hurdle to secure medical devices onto internal tissues. Here we identify transudation - a fluid flow exiting at organ surfaces - as the root cause. Through in vivo experiments in a pig model, we combined transudation monitoring with adhesion tests using poly (ethylene glycol) films. We show that transudation prevents the creation of adhesive contacts and explains adhesion differences among organs. On highly transuding organs like the liver, reducing transudation by a temporary vascular occlusion induced a remarkable transition from lubricated to adhesi

Tissue adhesion after surgical interventions (Review).

Tissue adhesion after surgical procedures is a common postoperative complication that affects a significant number of patients across all surgical disciplines. In pelvic surgical procedures, second-look surgeries have revealed adhesions in more than half of all patients weeks to several months after surgery. Adhesions can be asymptomatic, but they can also cause a wide range of complications, such as severe pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, ileus and reproductive dysfunction. Undetected adhesions that lead to problems in subsequent surgical interventions are also of high clinical importanc

Switchable Adhesion of Hydrogels to Plant and Animal Tissues.

The ability to "switch on" adhesion between a thin hydrogel and a biological tissue can be useful in biomedical applications such as surgery. One way to accomplish this is with an electric field, a phenomenon termed electroadhesion (EA). Here, it is shown that cationic gels can be adhered by EA to tissues across all of biology. This includes tissues from animals, including humans and other mammals; birds; fish; reptiles (e.g., lizards); amphibians (e.g., frogs), and invertebrates (e.g., shrimp, worms). Gels can also be adhered to soft tissues from plants, including fruit (e.g., plums) and vege

A tissue adhesives evaluated in vitro and in vivo analysis.

In this study, three kinds of two-component adhesive glues were prepared, namely, gel-dext glue made from modified gelatin and dextran, gel-HES glue made from modified gelatin and hydroxyethyl starch (HES), and chit-dext glue made from chitosan and modified dextran. Upon mixing the two-component solution together crosslinking occurred and a gel formed in several seconds, which would seal the wound tissue and stop the bleeding. The adhesive ability of those three prepared glues was evaluated in vitro and in vivo separately by measuring the bonding strength to two piece of porcine skin and the a

Use of cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive under a diaper.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the utility of cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive (Dermabond, Ethicon, Somerville, NJ, USA; an effective means of epithelial skin closure) under a diaper (i.e. constantly exposed to bodily fluids) in 25 children (not toilet-trained) undergoing inguinal surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of charts between July 1998 and July 2000 was used to identify children who were not toilet-trained and who had undergone inguinal surgery (e.g. orchidopexy, hernia and hydrocele repair). In addition to the type of surgery, the method of closure was also assessed; in all cas

In vitro adhesion of Staphylococcus strains to rabbit tissues.

Differences in the in vitro adhesion of Staphylococcus strains on rabbit tissues were evaluated by viable unit counts and radio-labeling. Among coagulase-positive strains, two freshly isolated strains and the Cowan I strain adhered much more than the Wood 46 strain especially to peritoneum. In addition, the Smith strain, which is coagulase-positive and encapsulated, showed on rabbit peritoneum a degree of adhesion smaller than that of the Cowan I strain and similar to that of the Wood 46 strain. These quantitative results were corroborated by examination of the bacteria on thin sections of per

[Use of tissue adhesives in the reconstruction of the frontal sinus].

Fractures of the anterior wall of the frontal sinus, complicated by impression of bone fragments, can cause serious functional and cosmetic disturbances. Surgeons often remove those fragments and obliterate the sinus. But disfigurement from the operation will be worse than that caused by original lesion and can only be corrected by further plastic surgery. Some surgeons use the technique of joining bone fragments by metal or thread sutures but it is only possible when the fragment are not too small. We present four patients treated over a period of 1975-1979 with the reconstruction of the fron
