Tobacco Use and Cessation Counseling among Dental Professionals in Saudi Arabia.

The study aimed to assess the prevalence of tobacco use among dental professionals and their attitudes and behaviors about tobacco cessation counseling in Saudi Arabia. A total of 359 male and female dental professionals participated in this cross-sectional study. A pretested self-administered questionnaire was administered among study participants by visiting dental hospitals and clinics in Saudi Arabia. In the study, 15.9% of the participants were current tobacco users and 50.4% had a tobacco user at home or the workplace. Most participants reported that tobacco use is associated with bad br

Longitudinal associations between flavored tobacco use and tobacco product cessation in a national sample of adults.

Use of flavored tobacco has been associated with lower likelihood of short-term abstinence from tobacco. It is unknown whether longer-term associations exist, particularly for a variety of products and specific flavor categories. This study used adult survey data from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study (2013-2018). We tested associations of past 30-day tobacco product use at wave 2 using both a 2-category any flavor versus unflavored variable and 4-category specific flavor (menthol/mint, sweet, and both menthol/mint and sweet) versus unflavored variable with past 12-m

Parental Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice on Tobacco Use, Smoking Cessation, and Children's Environmental Tobacco Smoke Exposure.

Background: Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure in children ranks one of the major public health problems in our time. Poor parental knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) on ETS often contribute to worse exposure of the kids. Thus, we aimed to document parental KAP regarding tobacco use, smoking cessation and children's ETS exposure, and to analyse how knowledge and attitude relate to practice. Methods: Self-administered KAP questionnaires were distributed to smoking parents recruited from the pediatric unit at the Prince of Wales Hospital, which provides pediatric service to a popula

Patterns of tobacco product use among US adults who use nicotine pouches and the association between nicotine pouch use and tobacco product use cessation.

INTRODUCTION: Nicotine pouch sales have substantially increased in the US. We examined the patterns of dually using nicotine pouches with other tobacco products, and whether nicotine pouch use was associated with tobacco product use cessation. METHODS: A nationally representative sample of US adults (≥21 years) participated in an online survey in 2024 and provided information about their tobacco use behaviours in 2023 and 2024, along with demographics. This analysis was restricted to those who reported using any tobacco products in 2023 (n=1460). Data were weighted to be nationally representa

Tobacco Use, Nicotine Dependence, and Cessation Methods in US Adults With Psychosis.

IMPORTANCE: Adults with psychotic disorders have high premature mortality, partly due to the high prevalence of smoking in this population. Yet recent data are lacking on tobacco product use among US adults with a history of psychosis. OBJECTIVE: To examine the sociodemographic characteristics and behavioral health status; types of tobacco products used; prevalence of use by age, sex, and race and ethnicity; and nicotine dependence severity and smoking cessation methods among community-dwelling adults with vs without psychosis. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study an

Experiences and Beliefs on Tobacco Use, Cessation in India: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Almost 80% of global tobacco usage is concentrated in low- and-middle-income countries (LMICs) like India. Added to this, there is dearth of dedicated tobacco cessation specialist services in healthcare settings in these regions. Identification of challenges in the delivery of cessation interventions and understanding the experiences of tobacco users will aid in formulating successful quit strategies. OBJECTIVES: This qualitative study in India aimed to understand the perspectives of tobacco-using patients in healthcare facilities regarding tobacco use and cessation. METHODS: Thi

Impact of a dental/dental hygiene tobacco-use cessation curriculum on practice.

Tobacco use is the chief avoidable cause of morbidity and mortality in North America and is associated with increased risk for oral cancer and increased prevalence and severity of periodontitis and other oral conditions. By delivering two- to three-minute tobacco-use cessation counseling (TUCC), oral health professionals can achieve quit rates substantially higher than the spontaneous quit rate. However, many clinicians report lack of training and knowledge in TUCC as barriers to providing cessation counseling. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether implementation of a comprehensive

Self-Reported Comfort and Use of Tobacco Cessation Interventions by Healthcare Providers.

Background The effects of tobacco use create a significant burden on the American healthcare system. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends a tobacco cessation framework consisting of asking all patients about any tobacco use, advising they quit, assessing their willingness to start a quit attempt, assisting in any attempts, and arranging follow-up. This is known as the "5A's" and is considered a standard of care for tobacco cessation. Physician-provided cessation interventions have been shown to be effective in helping patients stop their tobacco use; however, studies hav

Availability of tobacco cessation services in substance use disorder treatment programs: Impact of state tobacco control policy.

OBJECTIVE: Given the high prevalence of smoking among substance use disorder (SUD) patients, the specialty SUD treatment system is an important target for adoption and implementation of tobacco cessation (TC) services. While research has addressed the impact of tobacco control on individual tobacco consumption, largely overlooked in the literature is the potential impact of state tobacco control policies on availability of services for tobacco cessation. This paper examines the association between state tobacco control policy and availability of TC services in SUD treatment programs in the Uni

Racial/Ethnic Differences in Tobacco Use and Cessation Services among Individuals in Substance Use Treatment.

Few studies explore racial/ethnic disparities in tobacco use and access to cessation services among people with substance use disorders (SUD). We collected data from Hispanics (n = 255), non-Hispanic Whites (n = 195), and non-Hispanic Blacks (n = 126) across 24 Californian residential SUD treatment programs. Data were analyzed via regression models adjusting for demographics, cigarettes per day, past quit attempts, intent to quit in the next 30 days, and physical health status. Non-Hispanic Whites smoked at a higher rate (68.7%) than both Hispanics (54.9%) and non-Hispanic Blacks (55.6%) and s

Tobacco cessation, mental health, and substance use in a community pharmacist-linked cessation program for people experiencing homelessness.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of tobacco use among people experiencing homelessness is 70 %. Mental health and substance use disorders are associated with tobacco use and pose challenges for tobacco cessation. METHODS: Between 2019 and 2024, we recruited 206 adults experiencing homelessness from three homeless shelters in San Francisco, California. Participants were enrolled in a 12-week pharmacist-linked smoking cessation program that involved pharmacist counseling and furnishing of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and brief cessation coaching by trained shelter staff. We examined the assoc

How is Tobacco Use Addressed at US Substance Use Disorder Treatment Facilities? The Importance of Financial Support for Tobacco Cessation Treatment.

Persons in substance use disorders (SUD) treatment report a high prevalence of tobacco use. Often neglected in SUD treatment, some recent state-level policies mandated screening and offering tobacco use treatment or referral. We interviewed 85 providers from 68 SUD treatment facilities across 20 US states, assessed providers' estimates of tobacco use prevalence in their facilities, their perceptions on types of nicotine-containing products used by their service users, tobacco policies that were implemented at their facilities, and whether treatment (counseling or pharmacologic treatment) was o

Determining the impact of cannabis use on tobacco cessation: Results from a prospective non-randomized tobacco treatment trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Tobacco-cannabis co-use is associated with increased psychosocial and health harms; however, the treatment literature assessing the impact of co-use has been mixed and suffers from critical limitations. To date, no prospective studies have evaluated the degree to which cannabis co-use affects tobacco cessation, nor are there treatment recommendations for those who co-use. The goal of this study was to evaluate and quantify the impact of cannabis co-use on tobacco cessation through a 12-week prospective tobacco cessation trial. DESIGN: This was a multi-site, non-randomized

Daily Cannabis Use Is a Barrier to Tobacco Cessation Among Tobacco Quitline Callers at 7-Month Follow-up.

INTRODUCTION: Cannabis use is increasing among cigarette smokers in the United States. Prior studies suggest that cannabis use may be a barrier to smoking cessation. Yet, the extent to which this is the case among adults seeking to quit tobacco use remains unclear. Tobacco quitlines are the most common provider of no-cost treatment for adults who use smoke in the United States. This study investigated the association between cannabis use and smoking cessation outcomes among quitline callers. AIMS AND METHODS: Participants included callers to the New York State Smokers' Quitline, who were seek

Tobacco use behaviors and views on engaging in clinical trials for tobacco cessation among individuals who experience homelessness.

BACKGROUND: Clinical trials that include contingency management for smoking cessation have shown promising results for short-term quitting, but none have explored this approach for long-term abstinence in people experiencing homelessness. We designed a clinical trial of an extended contingency management intervention for smoking cessation for people experiencing homelessness. This study has two aims: (1) to explore tobacco use behaviors, and views toward smoking cessation, and (2) to explore factors influencing acceptability of engaging in such a trial in a sample of adult smokers experiencing

Upscaling a behavioural intervention program for tobacco use cessation - A randomised controlled study.

A randomised control trial was conducted among school teachers in Bihar, India for upscaling a tested, evidence-based tobacco intervention using train-the-trainer model. Six blocks in three districts were selected and randomised into intervention and control blocks. Cluster coordinators in intervention blocks were given training in the details of intervention. Cluster coordinators routinely train headmasters and they were asked to include intervention training in their routine. Except for the training material, no additional resources were provided to cluster coordinators and headmasters. Head

Effectiveness of tobacco use cessation interventions delivered by pharmacy personnel: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality. Implementation of tobacco use cessation interventions however requires strategies that reach large proportions of the population. Pharmacy personnel are therefore a potential human resource for delivering tobacco use cessation interventions. OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to identify, describe and synthesis currently available evidence on the effectiveness of tobacco use cessation interventions delivered by pharmacy personnel. METHODS: The following electronic databases were searched for studies published
