Assessing and minimizing risk of bias in randomized controlled trials of tobacco cessation interventions: Guidance from the Cochrane Tobacco Addiction Group.

The Cochrane Tobacco Addiction Group has created risk of bias tools, which are topic-agnostic. In 2012 the Cochrane Tobacco Addiction Group created guidance specific to considerations for reviews of randomized controlled trials of tobacco cessation interventions, building on existing Cochrane tools. The guidance covers issues relating to selection bias, performance bias, detection bias, attrition bias and selective reporting. In this paper, we set out to make this guidance publicly available, so that others can use and cite it. We provide advice for using this tool to appraise trials criticall

Treatment of tobacco dependence.

BACKGROUND: 110 000 to 140 000 people die in Germany each year of tobacco-related diseases. Thus, measures should be taken to lower the number of persons who start smoking, encourage smokers to stop, and keep those who have stopped from starting again, in order to achieve a sustained benefit in public health. METHOD: We present recommendations for the diagnostic evaluation, counseling, psychotherapy, and pharmacotherapy of smokers, derived from the findings of current Cochrane meta-analyses and from the pertinent German-language and American guidelines. RESULTS: Motivational interviewing by

Reprint of: Prevention and Treatment of Tobacco Use: JACC Health Promotion Series.

Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death worldwide and is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Both prevention of smoking initiation among youth and smoking cessation among established smokers are key for reducing smoking prevalence and the associated negative health consequences. Proven tobacco cessation treatment includes pharmacotherapy and behavioral support, which are most effective when provided together. First-line medications (varenicline, bupropion, and nicotine replacement) are effective and safe for patients with CVD. Clinicians who care for patients wi

Update and recommendations: Pharmacists' prescriptive authority for tobacco cessation medications in the United States.

To characterize state laws in the United States regarding the expansion of pharmacists' prescriptive authority for tobacco cessation medications, compare key components across different models, and discuss important considerations for states that are considering similar legislation or policies. Legislative language was reviewed and summarized for all states with pharmacist prescriptive authority for tobacco cessation medications, and state boards of pharmacy were contacted to determine the number of registered complaints or safety concerns received as a result of pharmacists' prescribing under

Intensive Behavioural and Pharmacological Treatment for Tobacco Dependence in Pregnant Women with Complex Psychosocial Challenges: A Case Report.

Up to 95% of women who use other substances also smoke tobacco during pregnancy. Challenging psychosocial circumstances and other barriers that contribute to high levels of tobacco dependence result in few quitting successfully. This case report describes the treatment of a highly tobacco dependent 34-year-old pregnant woman with a history of recent substance use, mental illness and trauma, enrolled in the Incentives to Quit Tobacco in Pregnancy program. Heavy smoking, both during the day and overnight, was reported. An extensive history of quit attempts, as well as a strong desire to cease to

Obesity and Tobacco Cessation Toolkits: Practical Tips and Tools to Save Lives.

Both obesity and smoking are public health burdens that together contribute to approximately one third of the deaths annually in the United States. In 2015, under the direction of Dr. Mark DeFrancesco, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists convened two workgroups with the purpose of creating toolkits that bring together information that the obstetrician-gynecologist can use to address these preventable health problems. An Obesity Prevention and Treatment Workgroup and a Tobacco and Nicotine Cessation Workgroup developed toolkits on Obesity Prevention and Treatment (www.acog.o

Zonnic®: a new player in an old field.

The tobacco industry is continually evolving to adapt to increasing tobacco control pressure and regulation, and to cater to consumer preferences. Recently, RJ Reynolds rolled-out a nicotine-containing gum, Zonnic®, which is marketed as a smoking cessation and reduction product and is sold at convenience stores at a lower price and in a smaller quantity than existing brands sold at pharmacies. The introduction of Zonnic® products is a critical first step in tobacco industry's involvement in the NRT market and a serious indication of the evolving tobacco and nicotine-delivery industry and envir

[Tobacco cessation treatment for people with schizophrenia].

Among patients suffering from schizophrenia, tobacco smoking prevalence is extremely high and represents a major burden in terms of morbidity and mortality. Tobacco smoking is under-diagnosed and under-treated by mental health professionals, mostly due to an overestimated risk of jeopardizing the patient's mental condition, but also due to a lack of expertise on tobacco cessation treatment. Despite the extent of this problem, pharmacological approaches haven't been studied enough. However, treatments such as varenicline, bupropion and nicotine replacement are effective and well tolerated and t

Implementing a tobacco-free workplace program at a substance use treatment center: a case study.

BACKGROUND: People with substance use disorders smoke cigarettes at much higher rates than the general population in the United States and are disproportionately affected by tobacco-related diseases. Many substance use treatment centers do not provide evidence-based tobacco cessation treatment or maintain comprehensive tobacco-free workplace policies. The goal of the current work is to identify barriers and facilitators to a successful and sustainable implementation of a tobacco-free workplace program, which includes a comprehensive tobacco-free policy and evidence-based cessation treatment se

Is hospitalization a missed opportunity to intervene on tobacco cessation?

BACKGROUND: Although tobacco use is associated with elevated morbidity and mortality, its use remains widespread among adults within the United States. Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) products are effective aids that improve rates of tobacco cessation. Many smokers interact with the medical system, such as during hospitalization, without their tobacco use addressed. Hospitalization is a teachable moment for patients to make health-related changes, including tobacco cessation. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of adult patients in a university-based patient-centered medical home from 2012

A community-based tobacco cessation program for individuals experiencing homelessness.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use is common among persons experiencing homelessness (PEH), and interventions are needed. We conducted a community-based, single-arm uncontrolled trial of a pharmacy-linked intervention for smoking cessation for PEH. METHODS: The intervention took place between September 2019 and June 2021 in homeless shelters in San Francisco, CA. We trained shelter staff on how to provide brief cessation counseling, then tested a program among PEH in two shelters that included one-time pharmacist-delivered cessation counseling and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) for 3 months. We exam

The Impact of Older Age on Smoking Cessation Outcomes After Standard Advice to Quit.

Older adults are a high priority population for smoking cessation. This study observed the influence of older age on the relationship between quitting predictors and cessation. Secondary analysis was conducted of a primary care trial of adults who smoke cigarettes randomized to standard advice to quit or advice plus 2 week supply of nicotine replacement therapy. Logistic regressions assessed interactions of age (<60 vs. ≥ 60 years) by predictors in relation to quit attempts and 6-month cessation controlling for treatment. Predicting quit attempts, there was an interaction of age by motivation

Approach bias retraining to augment smoking cessation: A pilot randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Approach tendency to smoking-related cues has been associated with greater cravings, nicotine dependence, and the likelihood of relapse. In this pilot randomized clinical trial, we examined the efficacy of approach bias retraining (ABR; i.e., increasing avoidance tendency) for enhancing standard smoking cessation treatment (ST). METHODS: Adult smokers (N = 96) motivated to quit were randomly assigned to 7 weekly in-person treatment sessions consisting of either (1) cognitive-behavioral therapy for smoking cessation (ST) and ABR (ST+ABR) or ST and sham retraining (ST+Sham). A man before his time: Russell's insights into nicotine, smoking, treatment and curbing the smoking problem.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This narrative review aimed to provide a brief overview of five key research 'classics' produced by the innovative and radical thought leader, Professor Michael Anthony Hamilton Russell (1932-2009), drawing upon his other work wherever feasible. METHODS: Narrative review. From more than 250 publications, we selected papers we considered seminal texts, published in 1971, 1976, 1978, 1979 and 1991. RESULTS: Russell was among the first researchers to explain that smoking was a dependence disorder caused by the drug nicotine decades before this was recognized formally. He th

Consensus Document SEPAR-AAMR-ALAT-ASONEUMOCITO-SMNCT on Assessment and Treatment for Consumers of New Tobacco and Nicotine Products.

The use of new tobacco and nicotine products (electronic nicotine delivery system, heated tobacco, and smoking water pipes) has increased in recent years worldwide. This has led to the emergence of a new smoker profile whose diagnostic and therapeutic approach is different from that of conventional tobacco smokers. The demand for help in quitting these new forms of smoking necessitates the development of guidelines or recommendations that are not currently available. Therefore, the Tobacco Control Group of the Spanish Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR) and in collaboration wit

An epidemic and a pandemic collide: Assessing the feasibility of tobacco treatment among vulnerable groups at COVID-19 protective lodging.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals experiencing homelessness have elevated smoking rates in addition to chronic and acute physical and mental health conditions, which may increase chances for complications associated with COVID-19 recovery. Unfortunately, there is underuse of tobacco cessation services in many agencies (e.g., substance use treatment centers, mental health treatment centers) providing care to these individuals. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the feasibility of providing tobacco cessation treatment alongside local COVID-19 emergency response efforts. METHOD: Taking Tex

Estimates of global research productivity in using nicotine replacement therapy for tobacco cessation: a bibliometric study.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use is a major healthcare problem worldwide. Tobacco smoking remains the most important risk factor for both cancer and heart diseases. This study was initiated due to the lack of published data concerning the real progress in research output in the use of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) for tobacco cessation. This study was aimed to use bibliometric analysis to estimate the NRT literature indexed in Scopus database at global level. METHODS: Core of the search strategy was the documents that contained specific words or phrases regarding NRT as keywords in the title. Pub

Improvement in visual performance after nicotine gum administration in tobacco use disorder: a case report.

Chronic tobacco consumption, identified as Tobacco Use Disorder (TUD), is a public health problem. We present a case report of a 37-year-old Brazilian male diagnosed with TUD at age 26, with no comorbidities, that presented visual improvements (i.e., lower thresholds and better discrimination) after nicotine gum administration. Here, we assessed contrast sensitivity and chromatic discrimination using the Metropsis and the Cambridge Colour Test, respectively. Results showed lower thresholds for both visual tasks after the use of nicotine gum. Even considering this is a single case report, our i
