Origins of and lessons from quantitative functional X-ray computed tomography of the lung.

Functional CT of the lung has emerged from quantitative CT (qCT). Structural details extracted at multiple lung volumes offer indices of function. Additionally, single volumetric images, if acquired at standardized lung volumes and body posture, can be used to model function by employing such engineering techniques as computational fluid dynamics. With the emergence of multispectral CT imaging including dual energy from energy integrating CT scanners and multienergy binning using the newly released photon counting CT technology, function is tagged via use of contrast agents. Lung disease pheno

Evaluation of commercial extension plates for the ACR CT accreditation phantom.

The American College of Radiology (ACR) Computed Tomography (CT) Accreditation Program requires submission of phantom scans acquired with the ACR accreditation phantom. There is a known issue with some wide-beam scanners in which the Hounsfield unit (HU) value of water may be correct when using the scanner manufacturer's phantom, but will be out of range in some scan modes when scanning the accreditation phantom. The phantom manufacturer has developed a product known as Extension Plates to eliminate the water HU value issue. The purpose of this technical note is to evaluate the effectiveness o

Influence of tube and patient positioning in thoracoabdominal CT examinations on radiation exposure-towards a better patient positioning.

Although iso-centric patient positioning is enormously important in computed tomography (CT), it is complicated in thoracoabdominal imaging by the varying dimensions of the body. Patient positioning can affect the appearance of the patient on the localiser. Positioned too close to the x-ray tube, a patient appears considerably more voluminous. The goal of this study is to assess the difference in radiation exposure of combined chest and abdomen CT scans between scans with prior 0°- and 180°-localisers in conjunction with patient positioning. In this IRB-approved retrospective study, patients w

Audit of the accessibility, state and cost of computed tomography service: A national audit in a middle-income resource setting.

BACKGROUND: Computed Tomography (CT) scanners are described as the workhouse of the radiology department. However, their geographical distribution, operationality, availability of skilled personnel and cost of the service may restrict their service to only a few people in some jurisdictions. OBJECTIVE: This study audited CT scanners in Ghana to determine their geographical distribution, factors affecting their state and service accessibility to provide data for informed decision-making. METHODS: A survey involving 45 CT centres was conducted between May and August 2021 using a 3-part semi-st

Patient-specific radiation risk-based tube current modulation for diagnostic CT.

PURPOSE: Modern CT scanners use automatic exposure control (AEC) techniques, such as tube current modulation (TCM), to reduce dose delivered to patients while maintaining image quality. In contrast to conventional approaches that minimize the tube current time product of the CT scan, referred to as mAsTCM in the following, we herein propose a new method referred to as riskTCM, which aims at reducing the radiation risk to the patient by taking into account the specific radiation risk of every dose-sensitive organ. METHODS: For current mAsTCM implementations, the mAs product is used as a surrog

Comparison between differently priced devices for digital capture of X-ray films using computed tomography as a gold standard: a multireader-multicase receiver operating characteristic curve study.

OBJECTIVE: Film digitizers are a specialized technology that is available for scanning X-ray radiographs; however, their cost makes them unaffordable for developing countries. Thus, less expensive alternatives are used. The purpose of this study was to compare three devices for digital capture of X-ray films: a film digitizer (US $15,000), a flatbed scanner (US $1800), and a 10-megapixel digital camera (US $450), in terms of diagnostic accuracy, defined as the area under the receiver operating characteristic curves and computed tomography as the gold standard. Potential risks of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease and cancer due to cumulative doses received from diagnostic CT scans?

Potential risks from radiation exposure on the development of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease are indicated by epidemiological studies. Medical exposures give the largest dose to the population from artificial sources, with cumulative doses from multiple CT scans being significant. Data on doses from scans performed on 12 CT scanners in three hospitals over a period of 5½ years, derived using RadimetricsTMsoftware, have been reviewed for 105 757 patients. Data have been downloaded for heart, brain, thyroid, and effective doses, and cumulative doses analysed using ExcelTMspreadsheets

[Rational diagnostic imaging of pelvic and acetabulum injuries].

In spite of the widespread availability of CT scanners, conventional X-ray radiographs remain the basic imaging modality in patients with pelvic and/or acetabular trauma. However, the extent of their use will depend on local utilities (e.g., availability of CT scanners) and on the patient's clinical condition. Regarding the inaccuracy of conventional radiography in the diagnosis of injuries of the dorsal pelvic ring and of the acetabulum, computed tomography represents the most important imaging modality in the clinically stable patient. CT provides an exact staging of the extent of trauma and

Ultrahigh resolution whole body photon counting computed tomography as a novel versatile tool for translational research from mouse to man.

X-ray computed tomography (CT) is a cardinal tool in clinical practice. It provides cross-sectional images within seconds. The recent introduction of clinical photon-counting CT allowed for an increase in spatial resolution by more than a factor of two resulting in a pixel size in the center of rotation of about 150 µm. This level of spatial resolution is in the order of dedicated preclinical micro-CT systems. However so far, the need for different dedicated clinical and preclinical systems often hinders the rapid translation of early research results to applications in men. This drawback migh

Dose distributions of proton therapy plans are robust against lowering the resolution of CTs combined with increasing noise.

BACKGROUND: Treatment planning in radiation therapy (RT) is performed on image sets acquired with commercial x-ray computed tomography (CT) scanners. Considering an increased frequency of verification scans for adaptive RT and the advent of alternatives to x-ray CTs, there is a need to review the requirements for image sets used in RT planning. PURPOSE: This study aims to derive the required image quality (IQ) for the computation of the dose distribution in proton therapy (PT) regarding spatial resolution and the combination of spatial resolution and noise. The knowledge gained is used to exp

An algorithm to calculate physical density of biomedical objects having 3 ≤ Zeff ≤ 20: an application study using clinical photon-counting computed tomography equipment.

Recently, photon-counting computed tomography (PC-CT) devices have become clinically available for X-ray diagnosis, and developments of analysis algorithms to generate various quantitative images have focused attention. This study proposes an algorithm to calculate the effective physical density (ρeff) of biological objects having an effective atomic number (Zeff) of 3-20. In our procedure, ρeff was determined when fitting the interaction cross sections (σs) to the measured linear attenuation coefficients (μs), which were determined from virtual monochromatic images (VMIs). In this process, th

CT Energy Consumption Savings From a Rapid-Reactivation Power-Save Mode for Interexamination Idle Periods.

BACKGROUND. Strategies to reduce CT scanner energy consumption have focused on powering down systems during extended idle periods. This approach is impractical for short interexamination periods. OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate energy consumption savings associated with a rapid-reactivation CT scanner power-save mode designed for short interexamination idle intervals. METHODS. A single CT scanner (Somatom X.ceed, Siemens Healthineers) was equipped with a new power-save mode that automatically activates 5 minutes after examination completion and allows instantaneous scanner
