Almost twice as much fatty acid was extracted without demineralization from the mature enamel of erupted teeth treated with 2:1 chloroform-methanol as from the enamel of unerupted teeth (32.64 micrograms/g versus 15.60 micrograms/g). Palmitic C16:0, stearic C18:0, oleic C18:1 omega 9 and linoleic acids C18:2 omega 6 were the chief fatty acids detected by gas-liquid chromatography. The percentage of free fatty acids and diglycerides was larger in unerupted than erupted teeth, whereas that of triglycerides, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine was larger in erupted teeth. These chang

Dental follicles are involved in odontogenesis, periodontogenesis, and tooth eruption. Dental follicles are unique structures, considering that their remnants can persist within the jawbones after odontogenesis throughout life if the tooth does not erupt. Pathological changes may occur in these tissues as individuals age. The changes range from benign to life threatening. Thus, the assessment of age-related changes in dental follicles associated with unerupted teeth is of paramount importance. In this review, we summarize the physiological roles and changes in dental follicles in odontogenesis

PURPOSE: To analyse the imaging features of odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) associated with an impacted tooth.
METHODS: Clinical and radiological data of 235 cases with OKCs were respectively investigated, with emphasis on imaging features of 36 OKCs, which were associated with an unerupted tooth.
RESULTS: In 36 cases of OKCs associated with an impacted tooth, the ratio of male to female was 1.77:1, and molar-ramus was involved in 26 cases (72.22%). OKCs in association with an unerupted tooth occurred mostly in patients ranging from 20 to 30 years (19 cases, 52.8%). There were 27 cases (75%)

OBJECTIVE: Pre-eruptive intramural resorption (PEIR) is defined as an abnormal, well-circumscribed radiolucency within the coronal dentin of the tooth, which is often overlooked in plain radiographs. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of PEIR and its related factors using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).
METHODS: CBCT images of 590 unerupted teeth were evaluated for the presence of PEIR, location of PEIR, number of lesions in the affected tooth, PEIR score, tooth angulation, tooth position, and pericoronal space. Binary logistic tests were used to analyze the association betw

PURPOSE: Most mandibular fractures occur because of blunt trauma. In some cases, the mandible can be weakened by the presence of an unerupted or impacted tooth. The fate of this tooth in the fracture line and its effects on bone healing remain an important outcome event.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, we analyzed the records of 117 patients with a total of 121 fractures having an unerupted tooth remaining in the fracture line who were treated and followed by the Dental Faculty of Ankara University between 1986 and 1996. All were open fractures, and none of the patients had a history of

Fifty consecutive cases presenting with unerupted maxillary incisors at orthodontic clinics were recorded and progress of the unerupted tooth followed up over a 4-year period following the exposure of the unerupted tooth (including removal of supernumerary tooth, etc., if present). The occlusal level, rotation, tilting, and general appearance were assessed at the conclusion of the investigation and the results are presented in this report. The earlier the removal of the causative factor preventing eruption of the incisor the better is the prognosis, and it is suggested that all teeth that have

The majority of previous studies that have looked at the management of delayed eruption secondary to a supernumerary tooth advocate exposure of the unerupted tooth at the time of supernumerary removal. However, accepted UK orthodontic practice is to extract the supernumerary and provide sufficient space for the unerupted tooth to erupt spontaneously. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the management and outcome for 96 patients who had been referred to Newcastle Dental Hospital between 1976 and 1988 who between them had 120 teeth with delayed eruption secondary to a supernumera

Aberrant tooth positions--such as infraocclusion, mesially ectopic maxillary first molar, palatally displaced canine, tooth transposition, and tooth rotation--are gaining attention as variables in a putative, genetically related pattern of dental anomalies. This study, using panoramic roentgenograms, was undertaken to measure the angular position of the unerupted mandibular second premolar (MnP2) in children. The experimental subjects were 17 children with an unerupted MnP2 and agenesis of the other MnP2, a likely indicator of site-specific genetic disturbance. An age/sex-matched control-refer

We report a case of dentigerous cyst of the maxilla and maxillary sinus that caused the ectopic displacement of an unerupted tooth into the orbital rim and floor. After an incisional biopsy, marsupialization of the lesion promoted its involution and stimulated osteogenesis. This in turn simplified the surgical enucleation of the specimen and removal of the unerupted tooth without the excessive loss of the bony contours of the maxilla.

Developmental disturbances of unerupted permanent tooth result from trauma to primary tooth as there is a close proximity between the root of the primary tooth and its permanent successor. The damage to the unerupted permanent tooth occurs by the transmission of traumatic forces to the permanent tooth germ. In the present case, however, a developmental disturbance on the permanent maxillary central incisor resulting from a direct effect of the inversely intruded primary maxillary central incisor is presented. The intruded tooth was extracted under general anesthesia. Upon eruption of the perma

A 2.5-year-old intact male Irish setter was presented for a draining tract associated with the right mandibular first molar tooth (409). Conscious oral examination yielded two draining tracts associated with the right mandibular first molar tooth. No obvious missing teeth or other gross abnormalities associated with the oral cavity were observed. Upon anesthetized radiographic evaluation, the presence of an unerupted, abnormally positioned, supernumerary premolar tooth was observed. The following article describes the extraction of the right mandibular first molar tooth (409) as well as the un

PURPOSE: Chitosan has been shown to promote wound healing and induce bone formation. The aim of this split-mouth study was to evaluate the effectiveness of chitosan based dressing in wound healing after lower third molar extraction.
METHOD: Asymptomatic symmetrical mandibular third molars were extracted simultaneously in 27 patients and Chitosan dressing was placed into the extraction socket in the test side. Pain scores were recorded on VAS using a 0 to 10 pain score. Wound healing was compared between right and left side. Radiographic findings were evaluated by observing lamina dura and den

OBJECTIVE: To determine the panoramic radiographic distance from the mandibular third molar tooth to the inferior alveolar canal.
STUDY DESIGN: Five hundred sixty mandibular third molars were evaluated by panoramic radiography. The teeth were grouped into erupted vs unerupted and further subdivided by tooth angulation. The distance from the most inferior aspect of the mandibular third molar tooth to the superior border of the inferior alveolar canal was measured with digital calipers. A t test was performed to compare erupted and unerupted teeth, and ANOVA was used to determine if a significa

Combined surgical and orthodontic treatment of upper canine retention showed thorough development during the past decade. Depending on the axial position of the unerupted canine there are three methods for their alignment. When the axis of the unerupted canine is near vertical making a mucosal window is enough for deliberation of the crown. When the unerupted canine is covered by bone a palatinal or buccal corticotomy is necessary for the accessibility of the crown. When the unerupted tooth is positioned near horizontally redressment force or removal is advisable. Combined surgical and orthodo

A case with a facially positioned, unerupted maxillary incisor is presented as an illustration of the potential of the periodontal tissues to establish a zone of gingiva following surgical intervention. Despite the fact that the tooth had an erupting position entirely within the area of the alveolar mucosa, a zone of keratinized gingiva developed following surgical exposure of the crown of the tooth. This healing potential should be considered when selecting the treatment for facially positioned, unerupted teeth.

Primary impaction of primary teeth might be due to genetic predisposition or physical disturbance including odontoma, supernumerary tooth, and crowded tooth. Among them, calcific deposit or odontoma is commonly associated with primary dentition. Early diagnosis and treatment is the key to prevent complications. However, results of treatment may vary depending on the condition of unerupted tooth. Here we report two clinical cases of unerupted primary mandibular second molars with physical barriers such as compound odontoma and calcific deposit focusing on diagnostic means and the importance of

Cysts of this site are quite common in mature ewes in New Zealand and the British Isles, although their true prevalence is not yet known. In most examples, an unerupted incisor is embedded in their wall but some do not contain a tooth. The cysts are lined by parakeratinized stratified squamous epithelium and generally exhibit a flat interface between the epithelium and the connective tissue. They may become secondarily infected, in which case they exhibit chronic inflammation. In some cases, foci of cementum are attached to the epithelial lining. When a tooth is involved, the cysts arise from

Lack of dental eruption may be accompanied by development of dentigerous cysts and has also been rarely associated with neoplasia. However, little information is available on prevalence of unerupted teeth and associated lesions in dogs and cats. The main objective of this study was to describe the epidemiologic data of canine and feline dental patients with unerupted teeth, and assess the prevalence of associated dentigerous cysts and tumors. Secondary aims included the evaluation of possible factors implicated in cystic development, and description of the histological features of dentigerous

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to demonstrate the imaging characteristics of gubernacular canals (GCs) in impacted/unerupted permanent teeth and to determine whether these characteristics differ as a result of the presence of eruption disturbances or pathologic conditions associated with impacted/unerupted teeth.
STUDY DESIGN: GCs were retrospectively analyzed by using cone beam computed tomography in 250 patients with 753 impacted/unerupted permanent teeth (105 males, 145 females; mean age, 21.09 ± 14.45 years; range 6-70 years).
RESULTS: The rate of detection of GCs was significantl

INTRODUCTION: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder characterized by bone fragility and craniofacial and dental abnormalities such as congenitally missing teeth and teeth that failed to erupt which are believed to be doubled in OI patients than normal populations and were associated with low oral health quality of life. However, the etiology of these abnormalities remains unclear. To understand the factors influencing missing and unerupted teeth, we investigated their prevalence in a cohort of OI patients as a function of the clinical phenotype (OI type), the genetic variant type,
