[A rare dental abnormality: "the phantom tooth" or "odontodysplasia". Apropos of a case].

"Phantom tooth" or "odontodysplasia" is one of the most unusual and rare of dental abnormalities, being characterised: Clinically, by the topography of the lesions, the involvement of both sets of teeth and abnormalities in the size and form of the teeth which remain unrupted or only partially evolved. Radiologically, by transparency of the teeth to X-rays. Histologically, by disorganisation of the dental structures and a highly characteristic appearance of the enamel and, in particular, dentine. On the basis of one case, the authors review in detail each aspect of these characteristics, payin

Administration of the bisphosphonate zoledronic acid during tooth development inhibits tooth eruption and formation and induces dental abnormalities in rats.

Bisphosphonates (BPs) are potent inhibitors of osteoclastic bone resorption and widely used for the treatment of osteoporosis and metastatic bone diseases. Recently, BPs have also been shown to benefit children with primary and secondary osteoporosis, including osteogenesis imperfecta; however, their long-term safety has not been established yet. Clinical and experimental studies have demonstrated that BPs delay or inhibit tooth eruption. The failure of tooth eruption causes several dental abnormalities. In this study, to determine the effects of BPs on tooth formation, the BP zoledronic acid

Abnormalities in Tooth Formation after Early Bisphosphonate Treatment in Children with Osteogenesis Imperfecta.

Treatment with intravenous bisphosphonate (BP) in children and adolescents with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) started in Sweden in 1991. No human studies on the role of BP therapy in development of disturbances in tooth mineralization or tooth morphology have been published. The study cohort comprised 219 individuals who were divided into four groups: group 1, BP treatment onset before 2 years of age (n = 22); group 2, BP treatment onset between 2 and 6 years of age (n = 20); group 3, BP treatment onset between 6 and 10 years of age (n = 13); and a control group of patients with OI who had not

HATS syndrome: hemimaxillary enlargement, asymmetry of the face, tooth abnormalities, and skin findings.

Hemimaxillary enlargement, asymmetry of the face, tooth abnormalities, and skin findings (HATS syndrome) is a rare developmental disorder involving the first and second branchial arches. Physical manifestations may present at birth or during early childhood. Characteristic findings include unilateral abnormalities of the face involving the bones, teeth, gums, and skin. Among the characteristic cutaneous manifestations of HATS syndrome, Becker nevus is the most common. A variety of modalities have been utilized in the treatment of HATS syndrome, but no standardized therapy has been established.

Interceptive approach to tooth eruption abnormalities: 10 year follow-up of a case.

A child affected by lack of eruption of the upper right primary cuspid from the presence of a compound odontoma was followed from 3 to 13 years of age. The early removal of the obstacle to eruption and the correct control of the case evolution allowed for a satisfactory alignment of the permanent teeth by means of minimal therapeutical intervention.

Msx1 deficient mice exhibit cleft palate and abnormalities of craniofacial and tooth development.

The Msx1 homeobox gene is expressed at diverse sites of epithelial-mesenchymal interaction during vertebrate embryogenesis, and has been implicated in signalling processes between tissue layers. To determine the phenotypic consequences of its deficiency, we prepared mice lacking Msx1 function. All Msx1- homozygotes manifest a cleft secondary palate, a deficiency of alveolar mandible and maxilla and a failure of tooth development. These mice also exhibit abnormalities of the nasal, frontal and parietal bones, and of the malleus in the middle ear. Msx1 thus has a critical role in mediating epith

[Case report of transient splenium abnormality in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease].

We report a patient of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) accompanied by transient splenium abnormality in brain MRI. A 34-year-old man suffered from chronic progressive unsteadiness and sensory disturbance of all limbs. Neurological examination showed muscle weakness and atrophy in the distal extremities with pes cavus, mild sensory disturbance of four extremities and generalized decreased reflexes. The nerve conduction study described the presence of sensory-motor polyneuropathy. We could not investigate his GJB1 gene. However, we suspected that he was X-linked CMT (CMTX), because his electro

[Analysis of amelogenesis imperfecta with abnormal tooth eruption caused by FAM83H mutation].

Objective: FAM83H is one of the major pathogenic genes of amelogenesis imperfecta (AI). Previous studies focused on the abnormal enamel development and mineralization caused by the mutations in FAM83H. Here we aimed to observe other effects of FAM83H mutations on tooth eruption besides AI through clinical case analysis. Methods: Published AI cases with FAM83H mutations were searched through PubMed database, and the characteristics of tooth eruption of each cases were counted and analyzed. The literature search range was from January 1, 2008 to February 28, 2023, using the keywords FAM83H and a

Abnormality in the Morphogenesis of Tooth Development and Relationship with Orthodontic Deformities and Treatment Approaches.

In the process of odontogenesis, a disturbance in the formation of the epithelium and mesenchyme can be observed and this can be manifested by atypical forms of dental development. Such biological phenomena with altered morphology are as follows: dens invaginatus (DI), dens evaginatus (DE), talon cusps, and double teeth (DT) or connate teeth (fusion and gemination). Patients with orthodontic anomalies who also exhibit teeth with morphogenetic disorders are presented in this article. Dens evaginatus and talon cusps pose orthodontic challenges in the treatment finishing phase. These reduce the p

Abnormal responses to cold stress in Charcot-Marie-Tooth I syndrome.

In Charcot-Marie-Tooth syndrome (CMT, Hereditary Motor Sensory Neuropathy), patient complaints of cold intolerance are common but their peripheral responses to cold have not been documented. Using digital plethysmography, a simple test of vascular reactivity with 1 minute cold stress, 20 unrelated adult CMT patients showed a significantly increased average heart rate and decreased average arterial oxygen saturation following cold when compared to 50 age-matched normal controls. There did not appear to be a unique or characteristic CMT vascular reaction to cold stress in CMT patients because th

Osteomatous changes and tooth abnormalities found in the jaw of patients with adenomatosis coli.

Oral findings on the panoramic tomograms of fifty-two patients with adenomatosis coli (AC) are presented. Osteomatous lesions, embedded teeth, and supernumerary teeth were found more frequently in AC patients than in a normal population. The osteomatous lesions were found in more than 80 percent of the AC patients, and the average number of such lesions per patient was 4.7. In a normal population, 15 percent had the osteomatous lesions, and the average number per patient was 1.1. The panoramic tomograms of twelve AC patients who had more than six osteomatous lesions showed very characteristic

Visual evoked potential abnormalities in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and comparison with Friedreich's ataxia.

Pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials (VEPs), recorded in 15 visually asymptomatic patients fulfilling the clinical and electrophysiological criteria of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMTD), were abnormal in 5 and possibly abnormal in another 3. Five patients showed a prolongation of P100 latency, one a reduction of amplitude and one a possibly abnormal "scotomatous" waveform. In 9 cases abnormalities were detected on neuro-ophthalmological examination. These were poorly correlated with VEP abnormalities, except for patients with 2 or more clinical eye signs. Relative central scotomata were

Epileptic seizures and abnormal tooth development as primary presentation of pseudohypoparathyroidism type 1B.

Pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) is a rare genetic disorder characterised by a non-functioning PTH. Usually, the diagnosis is made following (symptomatic) hypocalcaemia. We describe a case in which epileptic seizures and abnormalities in dental development were the main clinical manifestation of PHP type 1B. This case demonstrates the importance of screening for hypocalcaemia in patients with de novo epileptic seizures. In addition, antiepileptic medications themselves may interfere with calcium-phosphate metabolism, causing or aggravating a hypocalcaemia as well. By correcting the calcium level

Root malformation associated with a cervical mineralized diaphragm--a distinct form of tooth abnormality?

OBJECTIVE: Deviations in length and shape of tooth roots result from hard tissue resorption or occur as a developmental disorder. The purpose of this report is to present a type of root malformation which seems to have gone unreported so far. STUDY DESIGN: Two patients showing severely dysplastic roots of all permanent first molars were evaluated using radiography, histology as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopy. RESULTS: Medical histories of the patients revealed significant, but diverse events in the first year after birth. Radiographically the pulp cavity floors of the

Abnormal tooth size and morphology in subjects with cleft lip and/or palate in the north of England.

The aim of this study was to investigate tooth size and morphology in subjects with unilateral cleft palate (UCLP), bilateral cleft palate (BCLP), and isolated cleft palate (ICP) living in the north of England and to compare these with a control group. The measurements were undertaken retrospectively using dental study casts. To assess tooth size, the mesiodistal and buccolingual dimensions of each fully erupted permanent tooth were measured using digital Vernier callipers. The following morphological features of the teeth were assessed: upper incisor shovelling and crown form, the presence of

Downregulation of matrix metalloproteinases in hyperplastic dental follicles results in abnormal tooth eruption.

In this study, we compared the gene expression profiles of non-syndromic hyperplastic dental follicle (HDF) fibroblasts and normal dental follicle (NDF) fibroblasts using cDNA microarrays, quantitative PCR, and immunohistochemical staining. Microarray analysis showed that several collagens genes were upregulated in the HDFos, including collagen types I, IV, VIII, and XI and TIMP-1, -3, and -4 (fold ratio > 2.0). In contrast, the expression of MMP-1, -3, -10, and -16 together with IL-8 was more than two fold downregulated. The differential expression of the genes encoding alkaline phosphatase,
