INTRODUCTION: Dentoalveolar ankylosis necessarily accompanies the loss of periodontal ligament (PDL), which might alter the biomechanical response of the tooth. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of dentoalveolar ankylosis on a single-rooted tooth and the surrounding alveolar bone structures in the biomechanical standpoint.
METHODS: A basic model of an intact maxillary central incisor and the surrounding bone structures was chosen for the numeric analysis. From this basic model, 6 different models were further developed by combining 3 types of endodontic status (an int

The purpose of this article is to present the treatment of a 8-year-old boy with tooth ankylosis in teeth 85 and Class II division 1 malocclusion and to report a 10-year follow-up result. The patient was initially treated with a sagittal removable appliance, followed by an eruption guidance appliance and braces. The interceptive orthodontic treatment performed to recover the space lost by ankylosis of a deciduous tooth allowed a spontaneous eruption and prevented progression of the problem. The use of an eruption-guidance appliance corrected the dentoskeletal Class II, thus improving the patie

A fracture of the mandible is a rare complication that can occur during a dental extraction being carried out under local/general anesthesia. It is always advisable to take a pre-operative radiograph of the tooth to be considered for extraction to study the root configuration and make a surgical plan for the case. Most of the dental extractions carried out without taking a preoperative radiograph are completed uneventfully. However, in rare cases, complications can arise owing to local anatomical variations and lead to medicolegal issues and litigation. This article discusses the management of

INTRODUCTION: Long-term outcomes after replantation of avulsed anterior teeth remain difficult to predict. This retrospective study evaluated post-replantation tooth survival and assessed the tooth- and patient-level factors associated with tooth loss and ankylosis.
METHODS: Patients with replanted avulsed anterior teeth treated between 2008 and 2021 were identified from a clinical database. Observation time extended from replantation to tooth failure or last follow-up. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to estimate the survival probabilities using patient-cluster bootstrap confidence intervals (

Tooth ankylosis is a pathological condition of periodontal ligament (PDL) restoration after tooth replantation. Platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB) has been proposed as a promising factor for preventing tooth ankylosis. Using rat tooth replantation model, we investigated whether PDGF-BB accelerates the repair of PDL after tooth replantation without ankylosis, and its molecular mechanisms. In PDGF-BB pretreated replanted teeth (PDGF-BB group), ankylosis was markedly reduced and functionally organized PDL collagen fibers were restored; the mechanical strength of the healing PDL was resto

Introduction and Clinical Significance: Tooth ankylosis is a serious complication that can occur because of the replantation of an avulsed tooth. However, few reports have investigated the follow-up of replanted or ankylosed primary incisors because the replantation of primary teeth is not recommended in the guidelines of the International Association of Dental Traumatology. Case Presentation: A boy aged 4 years and 8 months was referred to hospital for further evaluation of the maxillary right primary central incisor. It had been avulsed and replanted 2 years earlier. The tooth was positioned

Techniques for dental transplantation today are taking better advantage of the potential for healing of the periodontal ligament than in the past and have reduced the risk of ankylosis and root resorption to below 1.5%. The resulting improvement in prognosis has made it possible to more confidently plan procedures that include orthodontic treatment. Transplantations can offer a good end result in certain clinical situations that would otherwise be difficult to manage: ectopic teeth, transpositions, tooth trauma sequellae, advanced decay or advanced periodontitis, implanted hard to treat impact

The op/op mouse, which carries an osteopetrotic mutation, suffers from complete failure of tooth eruption. Commonly the teeth are ankylosed to the bone. Previous reports of ankylosis in the op/op mouse have been based on light microscopy. The aim of this study was to clarify the ultrastructural features of the ankylotic area using the oolong tea extract (OTE) staining technique. The ultrastructural features of ankylosis did not parallel the findings of light microscopy. OTE staining clearly stained the collagen fibers of bone and tooth, and the space dividing the tooth and bone was revealed by

Ankylosis of teeth is the abnormal adherence of alveolar bone to dentin or cementum. Ankylosis of a submerged maxillary canine can be challenging when striving for an optimal occlusal and esthetic treatment outcome with orthognathic surgery. If an ankylosed tooth does not respond to orthodontic forces, surgical procedures may be indicated to facilitate movement of the tooth to the correct position including a single-tooth segmental osteotomy to reposition the alveolar bone including the ankylosed tooth. The objective of this case report is to describe the treatment of a patient with an ankylos

INTRODUCTION: Transplanting a tooth from one area of the mouth to another is known as autogenous tooth transplantation. It is a great choice for restoring young patients' teeth with developing alveolar bone because it uses the patient's own tooth as the replacement rather than a false one. This study aims to evaluate pain, infection, mobility, resorption, ankylosis, and success rate in the replacement of mandibular non-restorable molars through an immediate autotransplantation of the nonfunctional impacted mandibular third molar.

Periodontal pathology is an unavoidable complication following replantation of avulsed teeth. The present thesis focuses on the etiology, diagnosis, progression and prevention of dentoalveolar ankylosis. The experimental studies were carried out both in vitro and in vivo. Clinical studies were also performed on the progression of ankylosis. Initially, it was determined that the histomorphometrical method used in the animal studies was sufficiently accurate for the estimation of an area of a root surface showing a defined condition. In vivo studies revealed that the periodontal membrane (PDM) o

BACKGROUND: The success of tooth transplantation or replantation depends on the viability of periodontal ligament in the planted tooth. Mechanical injury to periodontal tissues frequently results in dental root resorption and dental ankylosis, which leads to the failure of transplantation or replantation. Enamel matrix derivative (EMD) has been recently used to induce periodontal regeneration. In this report, we show a clinical case of EMD application in the transplantation of an inversely impacted and immature tooth.
METHODS: An impacted second premolar was found in the right maxilla of a 16

The present clinical study investigated the outcome of intentional replantation using Emdogain for periodontal healing following trauma-related ankylosis. Sixteen ankylosed teeth affected by replacement resorption were treated as follows: After tooth extraction, the root canal was obturated with a retrograde titanium post. Emdogain was applied to the root surface and into the extraction socket with subsequent replantation of the tooth. Evaluation parameters included horizontal and vertical Periotest scores, percussion sound and periapical radiographs. All findings were compared to those of the

Transplantation and replantation of teeth are effective therapeutic approaches for tooth repositioning and avulsion, respectively. Transplantation involves transplanting an extracted tooth from the original site into another site, regenerating tissue including the periodontal ligament (PDL) and alveolar bone, around the transplanted tooth. Replantation places the avulsed tooth back to its original site, regenerating functional periodontal tissue. In clinical settings, transplantation and replantation result in favorable outcomes with regenerated PDL tissue in many cases. However, they often re

OBJECTIVE: In the young and growing patient, tooth ankylosis impedes alveolar growth and presents a serious dilemma regarding the best treatment approach. Two common treatment approaches, extraction of the ankylosed tooth or a "wait and see" will result in a compromised alveolar ridge that can affect future prosthetic rehabilitation. The purpose of this article is to discuss five treatment strategies that can be utilized in the management of tooth ankylosis in the growing patient: (1) extraction, (2) decoronation or root submergence, (3) socket shield (partial extraction), (4) segmental osteot

Ankylosis is generally discovered following resistance to orthodontic displacement of an impacted canine. This retrospective study, drawing on direct perioperative observation of impacted teeth and of their sites, is intended, among other things, to analyze the causes of resistance to orthodontic movement and to report on the therapeutic interest of the surgical tooth displacement technique in this type of clinical situation. We demonstrate that primary coronal ankylosis can be detected by the orthodontic practitioner using radiographic records, that cervical ankylosis consequent to operative

Intrusive luxation is a severe trauma-related event with a high frequency of pulp necrosis and root resorption. A common complication following intrusion is tooth ankylosis, which can extend to progressive replacement root resorption. An increasing infraposition in growing individuals can also occur. Decoronation is a new conservative treatment for cases of tooth ankylosis in young patients who have not finished growing. In this surgical technique, the tooth crown is removed and the root with replacement resorption process remains inside the alveolus. This treatment allows the alveolar bone to

BACKGROUND: The self-healing process following intrusive luxation of a tooth is often associated with serious complications, such as ankylosis. Once traumatic ankylosis is confirmed, spontaneous re-eruption of the intruded tooth is unlikely, and timely intervention is crucial to facilitate its repositioning.
CASE REPORT: This case report details the systematic management of an adolescent patient with a traumatically intruded incisor. Ankylosis was diagnosed after the tooth showed no spontaneous re-eruption during monitoring and failed to respond to orthodontic traction. Surgical luxation was

This report describes the treatment of a 13-year-old girl with unerupted maxillary permanent canines. It illustrates how recognizing an unexpected problem influenced the decision-making process. Despite 6 months of closed-eruption traction, the left canine had not erupted. However, the neighboring teeth were intruded, suggesting a diagnosis of canine ankylosis. When the site was surgically reopened, the wire chain used for the orthodontic traction appeared to be osseointegrated. It was renewed, and traction was applied for another 16 months, and the tooth was successfully brought into the arch

Dental ankylosis involves the fusion of root to bone. The idiopathic form occurs spontaneously before the eruption of the tooth concerned. Etiology is unknown. As the tooth becomes part of the bone-remodeling process, it is gradually resorbed and is replaced by bony tissue. The process is quite rapid and weakens the tooth. Thus, early diagnosis makes it possible to perform a graft in optimal conditions, this being the only means of severing the ankylosis and achieving adequate eruption. In some rare cases, the ankylotic point of fusion can be reached surgically and can be eliminated before ort
