Genotoxicity and oral tissue damage associated with tooth bleaching agents: A scoping review.

Tooth bleaching is one of the most frequently performed esthetic procedures in dentistry. Although peroxide-based bleaching agents effectively promote color change, their decomposition generates reactive oxygen species that may induce oxidative stress, cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, inflammation, and oral tissue alterations. This scoping review mapped and synthesized the available evidence regarding genotoxicity and oral tissue damage associated with tooth bleaching procedures, identified the biological models and analytical methods used to investigate these outcomes, and explored differences amo

Hydrogen peroxide tooth-whitening (bleaching) products: review of adverse effects and safety issues.

Hydrogen peroxide in the form of carbamide peroxide is widely used for tooth whitening (bleaching), both in professionally- and in self-administered products. Adverse effects have become evident. Cervical root resorption is a possible consequence of internal bleaching and is more frequently observed in teeth treated with the thermo-catalytic procedure. Tooth sensitivity is experienced in 15-78% of patients undergoing external tooth bleaching. However, clinical studies addressing other adverse effects are lacking. Direct contact with hydrogen peroxide induces genotoxic effects in bacteria and c

Experimental study to test the potential tumor promotion effect of a tooth bleaching agent.

Carbamide Peroxide is routinely employed as a whitener for tooth enamel. Oral mucosa protection is recommended to avoid inflammatory reactions. Experimental work has demonstrated its irritative effect on gastric mucosa when swallowed. The activity of certain oxidizing agents as tumoral promoters has been demonstrated and associated to their capacity to induce hyperplasia. Within this context it seemed of interest to assess the possible action of carbamide peroxide as a tumoral promoter in oral mucosa with or without a precancerous condition. Its action was tested in 2 models which are highly s

Comparison of tooth surface roughness after bleaching with conventional and different light-activated methods.

Purpose the increasing demand for aesthetic dental treatments has made in-office tooth bleaching a popular and minimally invasive procedure. However, bleaching may alter enamel surface roughness, potentially increasing plaque retention and discoloration. Laser activation has been proposed as a safer alternative. This study compared the effects of conventional bleaching, LED activation, and different laser systems (Diode, KTP, Nd-YAG, and CO₂) on enamel surface roughness. Methods sixty freshly extracted human anterior teeth were selected. Samples were randomly assigned to conventional bleaching

In vitro and ex vivo comparison of reactive oxygen-releasing granules for internal tooth bleaching.

INTRODUCTION: Traditionally, internal tooth bleaching was performed using sodium perborate slurries. These are banned in some areas for potential carcinogenic effects. More recently, highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide gels have been used, which may cause dentin degradation. Consequently, the search for ideal internal tooth bleaching agents is still on. This study compared pure ROS-releasing granules regarding their liberation of oxidizing species, pH induction, bleaching of blood-stained dentin, and effects on mechanical dentin properties. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The ROS-releasing granules
