The purpose of this study was to characterize the impact of tooth injury on the distribution of tyrosine receptor kinase B (TrkB) among trigeminal ganglion neurons and assess the time course for tooth injury-induced TrkB distribution changes. In addition, we sought to further characterize the subpopulation of the afferents expressing TrkB receptors. Fifteen adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were studied. Pulpal inflammation was induced and ganglia were subsequently harvested and processed at different time points. Standard immunohistochemical fluorescence techniques were used to visualize TrkB-li

Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is a member of a heterogeneous group of intermediate filaments in glial cells of both the central and peripheral nervous systems. We demonstrate here that satellite cells in the trigeminal ganglion (TG) increase immunoreactivity (IR) for GFAP in response to dental injury. The satellite cell reaction was most often confined to the somatotopic region of the ganglion that corresponded to the zone of damage in the periphery, although in some cases it was seen to spread out from a focal center in the maxillary region to neighboring zones corresponding to cell

The objective of our experiments was to identify new therapeutic strategies to stimulate dentin formation in an adult tooth. To address this objective, we evaluated dentin production in 2 acute trauma models: one involving a pulp exposure and the other involving a superficial dentin injury. Molecular, cellular, and histologic analyses revealed that in response to a severe injury, where the pulp is exposed to the oral cavity, cell death is rampant and the repair response initiates from surviving pulp cells and, to a lesser extent, surviving odontoblasts. When an injury is superficial, as in the

Traumatisms on the deciduous upper incisors could induce orthodontic indirect consequences on the permanent germ, dependent on his growth level and his malleability, dependent on connection between the root of deciduous incisor and the crown of permanent germ and according to the type of traumatism. According to those various data, it should be observed on the permanent incisor: germination of two germs, multiple odontoma, crown dilaceration, severe tipping of the crown with facial angulation, retention of the permanent germ with lack of root resorption of the deciduous teeth or simple cross-b

BACKGROUND: Dental trauma is not uncommon. The initial management provided at the time of injury is critical in predicting prognosis. However, initial management depends on correct diagnosis. Recently an App named 'Injured Tooth' was made available to diagnose traumatic injuries to the teeth and supporting structures.
AIM: To test the diagnostic ability of the Injured Tooth App compared with the conventional method of diagnosing traumatic injuries to the teeth.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was conducted at three different centres with 176 patients aged 0-15 years, having 201 injured teeth

The removal of lower wisdom teeth is one of the most frequent operations in oral surgery. Iatrogenic lesions of the lingual and inferior alveolar nerve and fractures of the lower jaw are rare, but can lead to actions for damage and compensation for personal suffering. The aim of our investigation was to elaborate recommendations for the oral surgeon from the legal point of view. Therefore we investigated in two data banks all court decisions concerning wisdom teeth and analysed them in regard to the obligation to provide information, documentation and the minimum requirements of the surgical t

Dental pulp infection is predominantly initiated by anaerobic, gram-negative bacterial flora introduced through dental caries, operative dental procedures, or severe tooth injury, which can lead to pulp necrosis. A 39-year-old man developed an extra-nasal sinus tract on the right side of the nostril following trauma to the right maxillary central incisor. He presented with a chief complaint of a painful mass inside the right nostril after the right maxillary central incisor was traumatized in a fall down the stairs. A diagnosis of a periapical abscess with a sinus tract on the right side of th

Dental fractures are common trauma complications in the oral cavity. The efficient diagnosis and treatment of dental injury are important elements in clinical dentistry. This article describes a case study of trauma in central maxillary incisors with tooth fragments lodged in the lower lip. Radiographs of the soft structures proved themselves as an important tool in the detection and identification of occult tooth fragments, and play an important role in the establishment of the treatment to be adopted. Also, case follow-up is of fundamental significance in the preservation and maintenance of

The dental pulp is a favorable model for studies of interactions between nociceptive sensory neurons and their peripheral target tissues. In the present study, we retrogradely labeled pulpal afferent neurons with an improved method that permits monitoring of changes in neuronal phenotype in response to controlled tooth injuries. The capacity of retrograde neuronal tracers to diffuse through dentinal tubules was exploited, thereby avoiding the severe injury to the pulp associated with previous tracer application methods. The strategy was to apply the durable fluorescent tracer, Fluoro-gold (FG)

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is the most commonly inherited peripheral neuropathy. CMT disease signs include distal limb neuropathy, abnormal gait, sensory defects, and deafness. We generated a novel line of CMT2E mice expressing hNF-L(E397K), which displayed muscle atrophy of the lower limbs without denervation, proximal reduction in large caliber axons, and decreased nerve conduction velocity. In this study, we challenged wild type, hNF-L and hNF-L(E397K) mice with crush injury to the sciatic nerve. We analyzed functional recovery by measuring toe spread and analyzed gait using the Catw

Intrusive luxation of primary teeth carries a high risk of damage to underlying permanent tooth germs. Ectopic eruption of permanent incisors is an unusual outcome of traumatic injury to their predecessors. In this case report, we describe the multidisciplinary management of the consequences of a primary tooth intrusion that led to severe ectopic eruption of the permanent left central incisor in a horizontal position at the level of the labial sulcus.

Injuries sustained from foreign bodies and burns after oil drum explosions are addressed immediately. This case reports a rare long-standing retained tooth after such an explosion. A 65-year-old male with a history of a victim of explosion injury to the face dating 20 years back with complaints of repeated nasal vestibulitis was evaluated. An X-ray of paranasal sinus followed by computed tomography of the nose and paranasal sinuses revealed a radio-opaque foreign body in the region of upper alveolus near left nasal vestibule. After consultation and clearance from dental department, exploration

Inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injury is usually caused by stretching or crushing of the neurovascular structures and postoperative intra-alveolar hematoma or edema after dental procedures. This results in paresthesia in the ipsilateral chin, lip (vermilion border, skin, and mucosa), and labial or buccal alveolar mucosa of the mandibular anterior teeth. However, there are no reports of sensory alterations in the teeth, especially tooth hypersensitivity, after IAN injury. I report a case in which paresthesia of the lower lip and hypersensitivity of the lower anterior teeth occurred simultaneousl

Traumata to primary teeth occur very often in small children. The highest prevalence of developmental disturbances of permanent teeth after trauma to their predecessors has been recorded after intrusive injuries of primary teeth. In the present survey 47% of the recalled children had such developmental disturbances. The majority of developmental disturbances consisted of enamel hypoplasia (59%) which included discoloration, defects or a combination of both. In some cases the clinical feature of enamel defects could be diagnosed radiographically before tooth eruption. However, the total number

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The complex cellular and molecular interactions between Schwann cells (SCs) and macrophages during Wallerian degeneration are a prerequisite to allow rapid uptake and degradation of myelin debris and axonal regeneration after peripheral nerve injury. In contrast, in non-injured nerves of Charcot-Marie-Tooth 1 neuropathies, aberrant macrophage activation by SCs carrying myelin gene defects is a disease amplifier that drives nerve damage and subsequent functional decline. Consequently, targeting nerve macrophages might be a translatable treatment strategy to mitigate disease

PURPOSE: To study the clinical effect of double miniscrews for extraction of horizontally impacted wisdom tooth adjacent to the inferior alveolar nerve canal.
METHODS: Eight horizontally impacted wisdom teeth requiring extraction because of orthodontic treatment were proven to be adjacent to the inferior alveolar nerve canal by means of cone-beam CT scan. The treatment began with double miniscrews traction under the help of cantilever beam. After 6~9 months, they left the canal and then were extracted.
RESULTS: After extraction, no patient developed lip numbness.
CONCLUSIONS: Application of

OBJECTIVE: The autogenous tooth transplantation and tooth replantation disrupt the original dental pulp and periodontal blood supply. Pulp necrosis post-reimplantation triggered inflammatory mediator leakage through the apical foramen, which stimulated periapical osteoclast activity and subsequent resorption of cementum, dentin, and alveolar bone. Successful outcomes thus depended critically on periodontal tissue regeneration. This review evaluated the therapeutic potential of enamel matrix derivatives (EMD) therein.
METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted across multiple electronic dat
