Factors Related to Erosive Tooth Wear throughout a Lifetime.

Factors related to the development of erosive tooth wear (ETW) over a lifetime can largely be divided into dietary, environmental and/or patient related. As the properties of the teeth change over time, these factors will be involved at different ages, and the susceptibility to ETW will vary according to age. Based on the available literature, dietary acid is the most important determinant of ETW. Various eating/drinking habits and oral hygiene routines are considered moderate factors in children and minor factors in adults. Medications and use of illicit drugs in adolescents and adults are po

Are Down syndrome children more vulnerable to tooth wear?

BACKGROUND: An oral condition that has largely been ignored in the Down syndrome population is pathological tooth wear. This study is aimed to create more awareness of the reasons underlying the tooth wear observed in patients with Down syndrome and to suggest different methods to prevent this condition. This research also potentially serves as a platform for future researchers to perform an in-depth analysis of the factors we identified. The aim of this study was to determine if children with Down syndrome are more prone to tooth wear than children who do not have Down syndrome. METHODS: Our

Longitudinal study of gastroesophageal reflux and erosive tooth wear.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 60% of patients presenting to dentists with erosive tooth wear have significant gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), despite minor reflux symptoms. No longitudinal studies of reflux-associated erosive tooth wear and of reflux characteristics have been reported to date. The aim of this study was to characterize the longitudinal course of GERD and of associated erosive tooth wear, as well as factors predictive of its progression, in a large group of patients. METHODS: Seventy-two patients presenting to dentists with clinically significant erosive tooth wear and increased es

Longitudinal relationship between incisal tooth wear and periodontal condition.

The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between the longitudinal development of incisal tooth wear and periodontal conditions in 51 persons. Stone casts obtained at the ages of 15 and 27 yr were used to assess incisal wear according to a graded scale, the Incisal wear Index (IwI). The wear increase after 12 yr, delta IwI, was related to the various health index scores at the age of 15 yr, including the Plaque Index (PlI) and Gingival Index (GI) systems. The chi-square tests showed a statistically significant association between delta IwI and periodontal condition in 15-yr-olds

Interaction of dental erosion and bruxism: the amplification of tooth wear.

Bruxism and erosion are important to identify during a dental examination. By understanding the etiologies of both processes, a management strategy can be implemented to decrease their effects. Management for bruxism, clenching, and parafunction can include medications, cognitive behavioral therapy, and dental appliances. Bruxism, clenching, and parafunction combined with dental erosion can cause dental wear to increase faster than any component alone.

Digital and artificial intelligence-based screening for erosive tooth wear.

BACKGROUND: Accurate detection of Erosive Tooth Wear (ETW) is essential for early intervention and monitoring. The Basic Erosive Wear Examination (BEWE) is frequently used clinically, yet reproducibility is limited. Digital intraoral scans and Artificial Intelligence (AI) may offer increased sensitivity, reduced bias, and improved diagnostic reliability. METHODS: This cross-sectional clinical study (ISRCTN16797270) recruited 61 dentate adults with mild, moderate and severe ETW, with analysis of 1600 teeth (4797 surfaces). Participants received a clinical BEWE and dentine-exposure examination

Wearing the devil down: Rate of tooth wear varies between wild and captive Tasmanian devils.

Mammalian carnivores rely on their sharp teeth to effectively kill and consume prey. However, over time this causes wear and breakage that alters tooth shape, reducing their effectiveness. Extreme tooth wear and damage is especially prevalent in species that scavenge carcasses, like the Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii), which are well known for their voracious appetites and ability to consume almost all of a carcass, including bone. In this study, we comprehensively describe tooth wear in captive and wild devils to look for differences in the patterns and rate of wear between these envir

Comparisons of tooth sizes, dental arch dimensions, tooth wear, and dental crowding in Amazonian indigenous people.

INRODUCTION: Our objective was to assess tooth wear, arch dimensions, tooth sizes, and dental crowding in 4 remote indigenous villages on the Xingu River in Brazil. These populations have similar patterns of dietary habits and practice exclusive breast-feeding, whereas studies in human genetics show large intertribal genetic distances and low intratribal variations. METHODS: Dental casts of 107 subjects in the permanent dentition were evaluated. Tooth wear, arch dimensions, mesiodistal tooth widths, and the irregularity index of the incisors were obtained and compared using analysis of varian
