Clinical effectiveness of toothbrushes and toothbrushing methods of plaque removal on partially erupted occlusal surfaces.

PURPOSE: The aim of this crossover study was to compare the efficacy of conventional and end-tufted toothbrushes and two methods of plaque removal on partially erupted occlusal surfaces in schoolchildren. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-seven subjects, aged 5-7 years, with at least one partially erupted lower permanent first molar, were randomly divided into three groups. Occlusal plaque (baseline) was scored using a disclosing solution applied to the occlusal surface of an erupting molar. Subjects were instructed to use a conventional toothbrush with horizontal scrubbing (conventional group);

Don't forget your toothbrush!

Patients with rectally inserted foreign bodies can present to accident and emergency departments or general medical practitioners. Rarely dentally related objects are inserted because of their ready availability in the domestic environment. There are many reasons given for their presence in the rectum, most commonly accidental insertion, assault, and psychosexual motives. This case is the first reported incident of a patient using a toothbrush to relieve his pruritus ani and subsequently losing it up into the rectum.

The toothbrush and gingival traumatic injury.

This paper explores, by means of clinical observation, toothbrush misuse and its relationship to gingival recession/clefting. The morphology of the lesions created is correlated with the vigor, duration, frequency and direction of the toothbrush abuse. In addition, histologic observations of biopsied tissue from different types of clefts and recessions are used as a basis for discussion of the possible pathogenesis of this type of lesion.

Toothbrush, an Unusual Foreign Body.

Accidental consumption of foreign body is a common presenting complain among patients especially in young age group. Majority of patients can be discharged safely after reassurance while a fraction of patient requires observation and further management. Here we report a case of a 35-year-old gentleman who presented to the out-patient department of our hospital in June 2021 for accidental ingestion of toothbrush. After detailed history and physical examination upper gastrointestinal endoscopy was planned for the patient. Failed endoscopic removal was considered the indication for surgery. A sup

Perforation of the duodenum by an ingested toothbrush.

We report a rare case of duodenal perforation caused by an ingested 12-cm long toothbrush handle. A 22-year-old female presented with intermittent epigastric pain for 6 d after swallowing a broken toothbrush. The swallowed toothbrush could not be removed from the second portion of the duodenum by endoscopy. Laparotomy revealed a perforation in the anterior wall of the duodenal bulb. The toothbrush was removed via the perforation which was debrided and closed. There were no postoperative complications.

Journey of a swallowed toothbrush to the colon.

Toothbrush swallowing is a rare event. Because no cases of spontaneous passage have been reported, prompt removal is recommended to prevent the development of complications. Most swallowed toothbrushes have been found in the esophagus or the stomach of affected patients, and there has been no previously reported case of a toothbrush in the colon. Here, we report a case of a swallowed toothbrush found in the ascending colon that caused a fistula between the right colon and the liver, with a complicating small hepatic abscess. This patient was successfully managed using exploratory laparotomy. T

Machine Learning-Based Toothbrushing Region Recognition Using Smart Toothbrush Holder and Wearable Sensors.

Oral health is a critical factor in maintaining overall health, and its association with systemic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus, has been extensively investigated. Effective plaque removal through proper toothbrushing techniques is fundamental for preventing dental caries and periodontal diseases. Despite standardized guidelines, many individuals fail to adhere to correct brushing techniques, thereby increasing the risk of oral diseases. To address this issue, this study proposes a fine-grained toothbrushing region recognition approach incorporating six machi

Laboratory evaluations of a bi-level, extremely tapered bristled toothbrush and a conventional uniform bristled toothbrush.

PURPOSE: To compare a uniquely shaped tapered-bristle manual toothbrush to a toothbrush with bristles uniform in height and diameter for the ability to remove artificial plaque deposits in areas of the mouth that are difficult to access; interproximal areas, the gingival margin and subgingival. METHODS: This study compared a GUM Summit+ Compact toothbrush featuring extremely tapered bristles and conventional bristle ends in a bi-level design. The upper, longest tapered bristles have the final 6 mm tapered to 0.01 diameter mm at the end. The conventional rounded end bristles have less than 0.5

Efficacy of occlusal plaque removal in erupting molars: a comparison of an electric toothbrush and the cross-toothbrushing technique.

The aim of this prospective crossover study was to compare the efficacy of two methods of plaque removal on partially erupted occlusal surfaces, which comprise about 80% of the sites affected by caries in schoolchildren. After a baseline examination, 16 children (aged 5-7 years) and their parents were instructed in cleaning the occlusal surface of an erupting molar either with an electric toothbrush or with a manual toothbrush in the cross-brushing technique. After 2 weeks, the proportion of the occlusal surface covered by plaque was measured again using the occlusal plaque index, a new, highl

Exploring Toothbrushing Duration Among Adults: A Systematic Review.

AIM: There is a need for greater understanding of the average brushing time among individuals. Since the average brushing time remains unclear, this study involves a systematic review to assess this aspect of oral hygiene practices and how it has evolved over the years. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The PubMed-MEDLINE and Cochrane-CENTRAL databases were searched from their inception until January 22, 2025, to identify relevant studies. Eligible clinical trials included healthy adults who performed self-brushing. The primary outcome was the average duration of a toothbrushing exercise in seconds/min,

Longitudinal Associations of Toothbrushing With Obesity and Hyperglycemia.

BACKGROUND: Toothbrushing is a health-related lifestyle habit and has been reported to contribute not only to oral health but also to some parameters of general health; however, little research has been conducted to understand the association of the frequency and timing of toothbrushing with the development of comprehensive metabolic abnormalities, with consideration of oral health condition. In this study, using longitudinal data, we examined this association in Japanese adults, adjusting for periodontal condition. METHODS: A 5-year longitudinal study was performed with 4,537 participants be

Oral hygiene of children with cleft lip and palate: Efficacy of the cleft toothbrush - A designed add-on to regular toothbrushes.

BACKGROUND: The anatomical and morphological alterations associated with cleft lip and palate (CLP) favour the buildup of dental plaque. AIM: To assess the efficacy of a new add-on to regular toothbrush-the Cleft Toothbrush, in removing the dental plaque of CLP patients, compared to a regular toothbrush. DESIGN: Forty-five children with CLP were randomly organized into two groups: A (n = 26, 2-6 years old) and B (n = 19, 7-12 years old). They were evaluated at days 0, 15, 30, and 60. After brushing their teeth with a regular toothbrush or with the Cleft Toothbrush, the dental plaque was reco

Parents' Experiences of Toothbrushing with Children: A Qualitative Study.

Globally, dental caries is one of the most prevalent diseases and is more common in children living in deprived areas. Dental caries is preventable, and guidance in the United Kingdom recommends parental supervised brushing (PSB): a collection of behaviors-including twice-daily toothbrushing with fluoridated toothpaste-that should begin upon eruption of the first tooth (approximately 6 to 12 mo of age) and for which children need to be helped or supervised by an adult until at least 7 y of age. The aim of this study was to explore parents' experiences of toothbrushing with their young children

Influence of a controlled pressure system on toothbrushing behavior.

The use of excessive brushing force has been shown to be a major cause of gingival abrasion. To aid in preventing over-vigorous brushing, the Philips/Jordan electric toothbrush incorporates a Controlled Pressure system (CPS) that causes the brush head to flex back when a toothbrushing force (TBF) in excess of a pre-determined threshold is exerted against the teeth or soft tissues. Two studies (I/II) were conducted to determine whether this mechanical feedback system is sufficiently sensitive to enable users to control their brushing behavior. In Study I, the learning pattern of brushing behavi

Cervical abrasion in relation to toothbrushing and periodontal health.

Cervical abrasion and some factors related to oral hygiene habits and periodontal health were investigated in 250 subjects aged 21-60 yr. The subjects were considered dentally aware since they had visited their dentist on a regular basis over the past several years. A high occurrence rate of cervical abrasion was noted with 85% of subjects exhibiting at least one superficial lesion. Manifest or deep lesions, although less common, were present in 22% of subjects. Both prevalence and severity increased with age. The severity expressed as the mean number of lesions was 7.3 for the total sample. I
