Neurobiology of Social Touch.

Social touch is a critical component of our daily lives, shaping our interactions with friends and loved ones. Reduced social touch, especially during early life, can have detrimental effects on health and well-being. A mechanistic understanding of the neural circuits for social touch is still underway, despite its centrality. To achieve a comprehensive understanding of social touch, a cellular and molecular emphasis must be placed on signaling and connectivity among neurons of the skin, spinal cord, and brain. Here, I review research on the molecules, cells, and circuits of the social touch n

The Troubled Touch of Autism.

A study finds that deficits in touch-sensing somatosensory neurons contribute to social interaction and anxiety phenotypes in mouse models of autism and Rett syndrome. These findings suggest that some core symptoms of autism might originate from aberrant development or function of the peripheral nervous system.

The issue of being touched.

The purpose of this empirical paper is to shed light on the phenomenon of being touched in professional care practice. The study has a qualitative design and is a phenomenological hermeneutical exploration based on the story of a care provider. In her story, she describes how her interactions with a substance abuser touched her. The narrative data stems from dialogue with her colleagues and demonstrates a moral appeal and challenge in practical care. Investigations reveal that being touched is about allowing one's self to be awakened by the suffering of others. Being touched by others' sufferi

The importance of touch in development.

Developmental delay is common in children deprived of normal sensory stimulation - for example, in premature neonates and some institutionalized children. Touch has emerged as an important modality for the facilitation of growth and development; positive effects of supplemental mechanosensory stimulation have been demonstrated in a wide range of organisms, from worm larvae to rat pups to human infants. Animal models are being used to elucidate the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying these effects. In rats, the amount of maternal licking received as a pup has a profound impact on the b

Is It Different to Touch Oneself Than to Touch Others? A Scientific Journey with Vincent Hayward.

In this article, we wish to share a scientific journey with our colleague and dear friend Vincent Hayward. The question of the extent to which it is different to touch oneself and someone else's skin brought us to many experimental studies and scientific discoveries. We present some of them here. It started with the use of a tactile device to investigate whether the reference frames specific to the hand differs depending on its position, towards or away from oneself. We then developed a technique allowing us to record skin-to-skin touch by means of an accelerator fixed at a short distance from

Distinction of self-produced touch and social touch at cortical and spinal cord levels.

Differentiation between self-produced tactile stimuli and touch by others is necessary for social interactions and for a coherent concept of "self." The mechanisms underlying this distinction are unknown. Here, we investigated the distinction between self- and other-produced light touch in healthy volunteers using three different approaches: fMRI, behavioral testing, and somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs) at spinal and cortical levels. Using fMRI, we found self-other differentiation in somatosensory and sociocognitive areas. Other-touch was related to activation in several areas, including

The Validated Touch-Video Database.

Visually observing a touch quickly reveals who is being touched, how it might feel, and the broader social or emotional context, shaping our interpretation of such interactions. Investigating these dimensions is essential for understanding how tactile experiences are processed individually and how we empathise with observed sensations in others. Here, we expand available resources for studying visually perceived touch by providing a wide-ranging set of dynamic interactions that specifically focus on the sensory qualities of touch. The Validated Touch-Video Database (VTD) consists of a set of 9

Social touch and human development.

Social touch is a powerful force in human development, shaping social reward, attachment, cognitive, communication, and emotional regulation from infancy and throughout life. In this review, we consider the question of how social touch is defined from both bottom-up and top-down perspectives. In the former category, there is a clear role for the C-touch (CT) system, which constitutes a unique submodality that mediates affective touch and contrasts with discriminative touch. Top-down factors such as culture, personal relationships, setting, gender, and other contextual influences are also impor

[Therapeutic touch and anorexia nervosa].

An innovative practice, therapeutic touch has been used for around ten years in the treatment of eating disorders. Delivered by nurse clinicians having received specific training, this approach is based on nursing diagnoses which identify the major symptoms of this pathology. The support is built around the body and its perceptions. Through the helping relationship, it mobilises the patient's resources to favour a relationship of trust, a letting-go, physical, psychological and emotional relaxation, and improves the therapeutic alliance.

Out of touch? How trauma shapes the experience of social touch - Neural and endocrine pathways.

Trauma can shape the way an individual experiences the world and interacts with other people. Touch is a key component of social interactions, but surprisingly little is known about how trauma exposure influences the processing of social touch. In this review, we examine possible neurobiological pathways through which trauma can influence touch processing and lead to touch aversion and avoidance in trauma-exposed individuals. Emerging evidence indicates that trauma may affect sensory touch thresholds by modulating activity in the primary sensory cortex and posterior insula. Disturbances in mul

Neural processing of self-touch and other-touch in anorexia nervosa and autism spectrum condition.

INTRODUCTION: The tactile sense plays a crucial role in the development and maintenance of a functional bodily self. The ability to differentiate between self- and nonself-generated touch contributes to the perception of the bodies' boundaries and more generally to self-other-distinction, both of which are thought be altered in anorexia nervosa (AN) and autism spectrum condition (AS). While it has been suggested that AN and AS are characterized by overlapping symptomatology, they might differ regarding body perception and self-other-distinction. METHODS: Participants with a diagnosis of AN (n

Touched by loneliness-how loneliness impacts the response to observed human touch: a tDCS study.

Lonely people often crave connectedness. However, they may also experience their environment as threatening, entering a self-preserving state that perpetuates loneliness. Research shows conflicting evidence about their response to positive social cues, and little is known about their experience of observed human touch. The right inferior frontal gyrus (rIFG) is part of an observation-execution network implicated in observed touch perception. Correlative studies also point to rIFG's involvement in loneliness. We examined the causal effect of rIFG anodal transcranial direct current stimulation o

The Significance of Touch in Pediatric Physiotherapy.

Change in theoretical framework over the last decades and recent research in pediatric physiotherapy, has created a debate surrounding therapeutic touch. What is the role of or is there a need for handling and hands-on facilitated guidance (facilitation)? Does it limit and/or interfere with children's learning and development? It is frequently argued that therapeutic touch represents a passive and/or static approach that restricts disabled children's participation during interaction and activity in clinical encounters leading to decreased home, school and community participation. Touch may eve

Kicked to touch: Hoodwinked by torticollis.

A 2-year-old girl presented to the emergency department with a 3-day history of a painful stiff neck after getting a kick to her head from her older brother. Her general practitioner had recently started her on oral antibiotics for otitis media. Plain film imaging of her cervical spine on admission revealed anterior subluxation of C2 on C3 suggestive of bifacetal dislocation. Subsequent CT imaging confirmed malalignment of the upper cervical spine. The patient was admitted and worked up with MRI of the cervical spine which unexpectedly revealed a large 4×2 cm retropharyngeal abscess extending

Heart-touching Chilaiditi's syndrome.

Symptomatic hepato-diaphragmatic interposition of a bowel loop or Chilaiditi's syndrome is a peculiar anatomical condition most often found by chance. Its described symptoms range from intermittent, mild abdominal pain and dyspepsia to acute intestinal obstruction. We report a case of hepato-diaphragmatic migration of the hepatic flexure of the colon associated to an unusual, heretofore unreported, angina-like pain exclusively evoked by the left lateral decubitus. To maximize the chance of observing anatomical changes in different postures, computed tomography of the chest and abdomen was perf

Violence and touch deprivation in adolescents.

The increasing incidence of violence among children and adolescents highlights the importance of identifying at-risk profiles as well as assessing interventions for preventing violence. Empirical research has suggested behavioral, central nervous system, and neurotransmitter/neurohormone dysregulation in violent individuals, including (1) an underaroused central nervous system characterized by right frontal electroencephalogram (EEG) hypoactivation, and (2) a neurotransmitter/neurohormone profile of lower norepinephrine, serotonin, and cortisol, and elevated dopamine and testosterone. The lite
