Sensory Perception Quotient Reveals Visual, Scent and Touch Sensory Hypersensitivity in People With Fibromyalgia Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Environmental sensitivity is commonly reported by people with fibromyalgia syndrome. People living with fibromyalgia syndrome frequently report hypersensitivity to noxious and non-noxious sensations. To date, there has been little empirical validation of sensory disturbance to non-noxious triggers. Environmental sensitivity is used as a diagnostic feature only in Bennet's alternative criteria for diagnosis of fibromyalgia, where it was ranked the second most important of the components for diagnosis, after number of pain sites. The aim of this study was to use a validated sensory m

Affective touch enhances low gamma activity during hand proprioceptive perception in children with different neurodevelopmental conditions.

BACKGROUND: Gamma wave activity in the sensorimotor cortex is a critical neural mechanism associated with proprioceptive processing, which is essential for motor coordination, balance, and spatial orientation. The modulation of gamma oscillations by different types of tactile stimuli, including affective touch, is not well understood, particularly in children with neurodevelopmental disorders such as cerebral palsy and autism spectrum disorder. AIMS: This study aims to explore how affective touch influences gamma oscillatory activity and proprioceptive performance in children with typical dev

A Comparative Analysis of Smartphone and Standard Tools for Touch Perception Assessment Across Multiple Body Sites.

Tactile perception plays an important role in activities of daily living, and it can be impaired in individuals with certain medical conditions. The most common tools used to assess tactile sensation, the Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments and the 128 Hz tuning fork, have poor repeatability and resolution. Long term, we aim to provide a repeatable, high-resolution testing platform that can be used to assess vibrotactile perception through smartphones without the need for an experimenter to be present to conduct the test. We present a smartphone-based vibration perception measurement platform and c

Blocking tactile input to one finger using anaesthetic enhances touch perception and learning in other fingers.

Brain plasticity is a key mechanism for learning and recovery. A striking example of plasticity in the adult brain occurs following input loss, for example, following amputation, whereby the deprived zone is "invaded" by new representations. Although it has long been assumed that such reorganization leads to functional benefits for the invading representation, the behavioral evidence is controversial. Here, we investigate whether a temporary period of somatosensory input loss to one finger, induced by anesthetic block, is sufficient to cause improvements in touch perception ("direct" effects o

Propensity to trust shapes perceptions of comforting touch between trustworthy human and robot partners.

Touching a friend to comfort or be comforted is a common prosocial behaviour, firmly based in mutual trust. Emphasising the interactive nature of trust and touch, we suggest that vulnerability, reciprocity and individual differences shape trust and perceptions of touch. We further investigate whether these elements also apply to companion robots. Participants (n = 152) were exposed to four comics depicting human-human or human-robot exchanges. Across conditions, one character was sad, the other initiated touch to comfort them, and the touchee reciprocated the touch. Participants first rated tr

Influence of new complete dentures on the touch perception threshold and quality of life of edentulous patients.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the touch perception threshold of the alveolar mucosa and quality of life of edentulous patients before (T0) and 30 days after (T1) the insertion of new complete dentures. BACKGROUND: Touch perception is important so that edentulous patients can detect the position of complete dentures in their mouth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 32 complete denture wearers with good oral and systemic health and no temporomandibular disorders for at least 5 years. At each time point (T0 and T1), two tests were performed (touch perception threshold and quality-of-life scal

Childhood Adversity and Affective Touch Perception: A Comparison of United Kingdom Care Leavers and Non-care Leavers.

In the United Kingdom, the most common reasons for a child to come under the care of social services are neglect and abuse. Such early childhood adversity is a risk factor for social-isolation and poor mental health in adulthood. Touch is a key channel for nurturing interactions, and previous studies have shown links between early somatosensory input, experience dependent neural plasticity, and later life emotional functioning. The aim of the present study was to test the relationship between childhood neglect/abuse and later life experiences, attitudes, and hedonic ratings of affective touch.

Biomimetic stimulation patterns drive natural artificial touch percepts using intracortical microstimulation in humans.

Objective.Intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of human somatosensory cortex evokes tactile percepts that people describe as originating from their own body, but are not always described as feeling natural. It remains unclear whether stimulation parameters such as amplitude, frequency, and spatiotemporal patterns across electrodes can be chosen to increase the naturalness of these artificial tactile percepts.Approach.In this study, we investigated whether biomimetic stimulation patterns-ICMS patterns that reproduce essential features of natural neural activity-increased the perceived naturaln

Perception of body shape and size without touch or proprioception: evidence from individuals with congenital and acquired neuropathy.

The degree to which mental representations of the body can be established and maintained without somatosensory input remains unclear. We contrast two "deafferented" adults, one who acquired large fibre sensory loss as an adult (IW) and another who was born without somatosensation (KS). We compared their responses to those of matched controls in three perceptual tasks: first accuracy of their mental image of their hands (assessed by testing recognition of correct hand length/width ratio in distorted photographs and by locating landmarks on the unseen hand); then accuracy of arm length judgement

Friction sensing mechanisms for perception and motor control: passive touch without sliding may not provide perceivable frictional information.

Perception of the frictional properties of a surface contributes to the multidimensional experience of exploring various materials; we slide our fingers over a surface to feel it. In contrast, during object manipulation, we grip objects without such intended exploratory movements. Given that we are aware of the slipperiness of objects or tools that are held in the hand, we investigated whether the initial contact between the fingertip skin and the surface of the object is sufficient to provide this consciously perceived frictional information. Using a two-alternative forced-choice protocol, we

Case Report: Plasticity in Central Sensory Finger Representation and Touch Perception After Microsurgical Reconstruction of Infraclavicular Brachial Plexus Injury.

After brachial plexus injury (BPI), early microsurgery aims at facilitating reconnection of the severed peripheral nerves with their orphan muscles and sensory receptors and thereby reestablishing communication with the brain. In order to investigate this sensory recovery, here we combined functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and tactile psychophysics in a patient who suffered a sharp, incomplete amputation of the dominant hand at the axilla level. To determine somatosensory detection and discomfort thresholds as well as sensory accuracy for fingers of both the intact and affected hand

Similar effects of fatigue induced by a repetitive pointing task on local and remote light touch and pain perception in men and women.

BACKGROUND: Women involved in repetitive, fatiguing, jobs develop more neck and/or shoulder musculoskeletal disorders than men. Sex differences in the pain response to exercise could contribute to the higher prevalence of neck/shoulder musculoskeletal disorders in women. The objective of this study was to assess sex differences in pain sensitivity following a fatiguing upper limb task. Relationships between measures of fatigue and of the sensitivity to nociceptive and to non-nociceptive stimulations were also explored. METHODS: Thirty healthy adults (15 women) performed a fatiguing repetitive

The effect of intranasal oxytocin on the perception of affective touch and multisensory integration in anorexia nervosa: protocol for a double-blind placebo-controlled crossover study.

INTRODUCTION: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder characterised by restriction of energy intake, fears of gaining weight and related body image disturbances. The oxytocinergic system has been proposed as a pathophysiological candidate for AN. Oxytocin is a neuropeptide involved in bodily processes (eg, breast feeding) and in the onset of social behaviours (eg, bonding). Studies investigating the effect of intranasal oxytocin (IN-OT) in AN showed that it can improve attentional bias for high-calorie food and fat bodies stimuli, and related stress. However, less is known about the effect

Modulating vicarious tactile perception with transcranial electrical current stimulation.

Our capacity to share the experiences of others is a critical part of social behaviour. One process thought to be important for this is vicarious perception. Passively viewing touch activates some of the same network of brain regions as the direct experience of touch. This vicarious experience is usually implicit, but for some people, viewing touch evokes conscious tactile sensations (mirror-touch synaesthesia). Recent work has attempted to induce conscious vicarious touch in those that do not normally experience these sensations, using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). Anodal tD

Vision Fine-Tunes Predictions of Bimanual Self-Touch.

Self-touch is attenuated compared to external touch due to internal forward models predicting the somatosensory consequences of our movements. These self-touch predictions are continuously updated during the movement using the available sensory input, resulting in a precise temporal tuning of somatosensory perception. However, the contributions of different sensory inputs, such as vision, to the predictions of the forward models and thus the resulting modulation of somatosensory perception remain unknown. In this pre-registered study, participants discriminated forces applied to their left ind

Gone Fishin': Perceiving the length of one object that is non-rigidly attached to a wielded object.

We performed four experiments to investigate whether people can perceive the length of a target object (a "fish") that is attached to a freely wielded object (the "fishing pole") by a length of string, and if so, whether this ability is grounded in the sensitivity of the touch system to invariant mechanical parameters that describe the forces and torques required to move the target object. In particular, we investigated sensitivity to mass, static moment, and rotational inertia-the forces required to keep an object from falling due to gravity, the torque required to keep an object from rotatin

A Suspended, 3D Morphing Sensory System for Robots to Feel and Protect.

Artificial sensory systems with synergistic touch and pain perception hold substantial promise for environment interaction and human-robot communication. However, the realization of biological skin-like functional integration of sensors with sensitive touch and pain perception still remains a challenge. Here, a concept is proposed of suspended electronic skins enabling 3D deformation-mechanical contact interactions for achieving synergetic ultrasensitive touch and adjustable pain perception. The suspended sensory system can sensitively capture tiny touch stimuli as low as 0.02 Pa and actively

Pleasantness ratings in response to affective touch across hairy and glabrous skin: A meta-analysis.

The processing of hedonic aspects of touch, namely affective touch, is associated with the activation of C-Tactile (CT) fibers. CTs were thought to be present only in hairy skin, with glabrous skin being often used as control site in affective touch studies. Nevertheless, several articles comparing pleasantness perception across hairy and glabrous skin reported no significant differences. Surprisingly, CT fibers have also been recently detected on the glabrous palm, further questioning whether affective touch perception across both hairy and glabrous skin is comparable. The present meta-analys

Cortical evoked potentials and somatosensory perception in chronic spinal cord injury patients.

The correlation between somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) and sensory perception was studied in 110 patients with traumatic chronic spinal cord lesions. Perception thresholds over the legs for light touch, vibratory sensibility, temperature and thermal pain were tested together with recordings of tibial and peroneal SEPs. Tibial nerve SEPs correlated better with sensory perception than peroneal nerve SEPs. Normal tibial nerve SEPs were not present with absent or trace vibratory sensibility and vice versa. However, we found many exceptions to the correlation between temperature and pain pe

The neural basis of tactile texture perception.

Running our fingers across a textured surface gives rise to two types of skin deformations, each transduced by different tactile nerve fibers. Coarse features produce large-scale skin deformations whose spatial configuration is reflected in the spatial pattern of activation of some tactile fibers. Scanning a finely textured surface elicits vibrations in the skin, which in turn evoked temporally patterned responses in other fibers. These two neural codes-spatial and temporal-drive a spectrum of neural response properties in somatosensory cortex: At one extreme, neurons are sensitive to spatial
