Transplantation tourism: high risk for the recipients.

BACKGROUND: The shortage of donor organ supply is forcing patients with end-stage renal disease to alternative searches. The aim of this study is to present the clinical and laboratory data of five patients who were transplanted in Egypt from paid living-unrelated donors and followed at our institution. METHODS: Five patients (four male, one female, mean age 51 yr) were included in this retrospective study. RESULTS: All allografts still have good function with a mean serum creatinine level of 0.9 mg/dL. Surgical and medical problems were common such as wound infection (n = 3), evisceration (

Transmission of zoonoses through immigration and tourism.

More than 200 of the documented zoonoses represent a high proportion of the infectious diseases that cause cases of morbidity and mortality and almost 75% are emerging infections. Immigration and tourism are human activities that are included in the broader field of human migration and travel. Travel plays a significant role in the emergence and spread of disease. The migration of humans has provided the route of spread for infectious diseases and zoonoses (for example, plague, yellow fever, monkey pox and severe acute respiratory syndrome). Tourism constitutes a small fraction of overall move

Medical tourism: globalization of the healthcare marketplace.

The citizens of many countries have long traveled to the United States and to the developed countries of Europe to seek the expertise and advanced technology available in leading medical centers. In the recent past, a trend known as medical tourism has emerged wherein citizens of highly developed countries choose to bypass care offered in their own communities and travel to less developed areas of the world to receive a wide variety of medical services. Medical tourism is becoming increasingly popular, and it is projected that as many as 750,000 Americans will seek offshore medical care in 200

[Tourism and risk of infection (author's transl)].

Great streams of tourists flow every year from the Federal Republic to southern countries. The danger of infection with serious tropical diseases such as smallpox, cholera or leprosy is fairly small, statistically speaking. Even exotic parasitoses merit only individual medical interest in the majority of cases. Of greater importance are the cosmopolitan infectious diseases such as typhoid fever, paratyphoid, salmonella enteritis, poliomyelitis, viral hepatitides which are transmitted orally and altogether are imported in no small numbers. The alteration of the mode of living caused by the holi

Legal harmonization and reproductive tourism in Europe.

Legislation of ethical issues illustrates the uneasy mix of ethics and politics. Although the majority has the political right to express its moral views in the law, a number of important ethical values like autonomy, tolerance and respect for other people's opinions urge the majority to take the minorities' position into account. Ignoring pluralism in society will inevitably lead to reproductive tourism. Although European legislation and harmonization in the domain of medically assisted reproduction is presented as a partial solution to this phenomenon, it is argued that European legislation

How tourism experiences relate to eWOM intention: the roles of self-expansion and place attachment in ancient town tourism.

Why are certain tourism experiences more strongly associated with tourists' self-expansion, place attachment, and destination advocacy than others? Drawing on self-expansion theory, this study examines the psychological processes through which experiential consumption in ancient town tourism is associated with electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) intention. Integrating the experience economy framework, self-expansion theory, place attachment theory, and the stimulus-organism-response framework, we propose that tourism experiences are associated with eWOM intention indirectly through self-expansion

Designing Innovative Assistive Technology Devices for Tourism.

Active tourism improves human health and well-being regardless of age or disabilities. The paper analyses and describes current issues concerning the tourism of people with disabilities. The starting point is the currently insufficient availability of tourist offers for individuals with considerable motor dysfunctions. One of the causes for these limitations stems from deficiencies in transport means for people with disabilities. It was found that for a disabled passenger using public transport, it is crucial to consider its accessibility in the context of the entire transport system. Another

Individualized tourism recommendation based on self-attention.

Although the era of big data has brought convenience to daily life, it has also caused many problems. In the field of scenic tourism, it is increasingly difficult for people to choose the scenic spot that meets their needs from mass information. To provide high-quality services to users, a recommended tourism model is introduced in this paper. On the one hand, the tourism system utilises the users' historical interactions with different scenic spots to infer their short- and long-term favorites. Among them, the users' short-term demands are modelled through self-attention mechanism, and the pr

Infectious disease risk and international tourism demand.

CONTEXT: For some countries, favourable climatic conditions for tourism are often associated with favourable conditions for infectious diseases, with the ensuing development constraints on the tourist sectors of impoverished countries where tourism's economic contribution has a high potential. This paper evaluates the economic implications of eradication of Malaria, Dengue, Yellow Fever and Ebola on the affected destination countries focusing on the tourist expenditures. METHODS: A gravity model for international tourism flows is used to provide an estimation of the impact of each travel-rela

Transplant tourism and donor-derived parasitic infections.

Transplant tourism, travel with the intent of receiving or donating a transplanted organ, has grown immensely in the past decade but is not without risks. Solid organ donors are potential carriers of infection and rates of infection are high in transplant recipients. Returning transplant recipients should be screened for blood-borne pathogens, including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV), as well as bacteremia, urinary tract infections, and other endemic pathogens (malaria, tuberculosis, Chagas disease, and so on). Efforts should be made to

Structural obstacles and the mediated efficiency paradox: A DEA-Tobit exploration of the heterogeneous role of tourism intention in China's tourism enterprises.

This study examines how environmental structures and tourism intention jointly influence the operating efficiency of tourism enterprises in China, using travel agencies as a case study. Employing self-determination theory (SDT) and Maslow's hierarchy of needs (MHN) as explanatory frameworks, we interpret structural obstacles as factors that erode the socioeconomic foundations of "tourism rights", thereby suppressing aggregate tourism demand. The results from the data envelopment analysis (DEA) and Tobit regression reveal a mediated efficiency paradox: structural obstacles do not influence ente

Medical tourism for cellular therapy: a clinical perspective.

Medical tourism in the field of cellular therapy has been increasing exponentially, especially in the past decade, due to multiple advances in the field. Our Viewpoint explores this growing field, with a specific focus on haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) and chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy. We discuss the global status, regulatory challenges, and ethical considerations associated with medical tourism. We highlight benefits and drawbacks of medical tourism with regard to patient care and the impact on local health-care systems. We also address the crucial distincti

The Challenge of Graft Nephrectomy after Transplant Tourism.

The morbidity and mortality rates of transplant nephrectomy are closely related to the indications of nephrectomy. This study evaluates the indications, etiology, and complications of graft nephrectomies for commercial kidney transplantation (CKT). Data were analyzed retrospectively for graft nephrectomies for CKT from January 2009 to December 2017 at the Royal Hospital, Muscat, Oman. Four hundred and three patients received CKT and 34 patients required a nephrectomy. Twenty-five patients had a nephrectomy within 10 weeks of CKT in the early group, and nine patients in the late group had the g

Transplant tourism: a modern iteration of an ancient problem.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To explore the scope and implications of emerging global problem of transplant tourism, a practice in which patients seek transplant services (most commonly kidney allografts) in countries other than their permanent residence. Potential remedies that must be implemented if abuses are to be curbed are also offered. RECENT FINDINGS: Although traveling abroad for medical services may not be problematic from a number of perspectives, what makes transplant tourism so troubling is its link with organ trafficking and transplant commercialism. Unlike many illegal markets, however,

Another view of "humanitarian ventures" and "fistula tourism".

There are many ethical issues involved in medical missions to developing countries. The Current Opinion/Update "Humanitarian ventures or 'fistula tourism?': the ethical perils of pelvic surgery in the developing world" raised many concerns about surgical trips to treat obstetric fistula. Despite a lack of experience with obstetric fistula, western surgeons may still bring surgical and public health techniques that may be of value to health systems in developing countries. Emphasis should be placed on program development and assessment first. This should include not only surgical training but a

The Allures and the Alarms of the Hair Transplant Tourism Industry.

BACKGROUND: Hair transplant tourism has surged globally, with Turkey, especially Istanbul, becoming the epicenter, generating about US$1 billion annually. This growth is fueled by substantially lower costs and appealing all-inclusive packages, leading patients to prioritize perceived value despite associated risks abroad. OBJECTIVES: This review critically examines the multifaceted international hair transplant industry, using Turkey as a case study. We aim to analyze economic drivers and the perception that high surgical volume equates to expertise, against significant patient safety concern

Reviving medical tourism in Pakistan - A narrative review.

Medical and health care traverse geographical boundaries in the form of "Medical Tourism" with patients travelling from low and middle-income countries to developed nations and vice versa as well. Affordable medical care is also attracting patients from developed nations to countries like India, Thailand, UAE and others with international accreditation playing a key role. This also yields economic benefits for the recipient countries. Pakistan unfortunately lags behind in acquiring "destination of choice" status for medical tourism which undisputedly can benefit its constrained economy. There
