This case shows the importance of the early diagnosis of the tracheomalacia and the treatment of asphyxia in thyroid huge mass.

PURPOSE: In severe tracheomalacia, aortopexy addresses anterior vascular compression, but does not directly address posterior membranous tracheal intrusion. We review patient outcomes of posterior tracheopexy for tracheomalacia with posterior intrusion to determine if there were resolution of clinical symptoms and bronchoscopic evidence of improvement in airway collapse.
METHODS: All patients who underwent posterior tracheopexy from October 2012 to March 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical symptoms, tracheomalacia scores based on standardized dynamic airway evaluation by anatomical r

Patients with diffuse airway instability due to tracheobronchomalacia or excessive dynamic airway collapse are typically highly symptomatic, with marked dyspnoea, recurrent bronchopulmonary infections and excruciating intractable cough. Silicone stents achieve immediate symptom control, but are - due to the typical complications associated with stent treatment - usually not an option for long-term treatment. The aim of surgical intervention is definitive stabilisation of the trachea and of both main bronchi by posterior splinting of the Paries membranaceus with a polypropylene mesh. This opera

We report on a white boy with Hallermann-Streiff syndrome (HSS) who also had tracheomalacia. Chronic respiratory insufficiency led to biventricular failure and death at age 6 months. There have been no previously reported cases of Hallermann-Streiff syndrome with documented tracheomalacia. However, there may be cases in which tracheomalacia may have been present, but not diagnosed. The literature contains 6 HSS cases with severe respiratory symptoms. Tracheomalacia should be considered in a patient with HSS who presents with an unusual cry, stridor, choking, or apnea. With the availability of

Congenital tracheomalacia is the most common congenital tracheal abnormality and occurs in approximately 1:2,100 children. Tracheomalacia can be isolated or associated with other airway anomalies such as laryngomalacia, bronchomalacia, and large laryngeal clefts. Also, an abnormal division of the embryonic foregut is frequently associated with congenital tracheomalacia; mostly in the form of proximal esophageal atresia with distal tracheoesophageal fistula. In such cases, the ratio between the cartilage ring and the posterior membranous wall drops from the normal ratio of 4 to 5:1 to 2 to 3:1.

During the past 12 years (1985-1998), 28 infants and children were operated on here for tracheomalacia. The diagnosis was made in all using rigid bronchoscopy. During the examination the infants breathed spontaneously, but the trachea collapsed on forced expiration. Indications for surgery were repeated cyanotic spells ("dying spells") in 22, recurrent pneumonia, and inability to extubate (in 8). In 11 there were more than 1 indications. Age at surgery was from 7 days to 3 years (average 11.7 months). All 28 children underwent bronchoscopy and guided aortopexy via a left-third intercostal appr

Forty-eight patients with repaired congenital oesophageal anomaly underwent aortopexy for significant tracheomalacia between 1980 and 1990. Indications for aortopexy included recurrent apnoea/cyanosis in 31, near fatal episodes in 16, recurrent respiratory distress and infection in 20 and worsening stridor in 15. Gastro-oesophageal reflux was noted in 30 patients, recurrent fistula in 6 and oesophageal stricture in 14. Aortopexy cured near fatal episodes in all patients and resulted in improvement of airway obstruction in 95%. The procedure failed in 2 patients due to unrecognised bronchomalac

PURPOSE: Evaluation of the effect of supraglottoplasty on co-existing tracheomalacia in pediatric patients with congenital laryngotracheomalacia to establish the venturi effect in vivo.
METHODS: A prospective interventional study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital from 2020 to 2024. All consecutive pediatric patients undergoing supraglottoplasty for congenital laryngomalacia, with co-existing tracheomalacia on pre-operative bronchoscopic assessment were included and were assessed for change in severity of tracheomalacia by bronchoscopy and clinical parameters post-surgery as a comparis

PURPOSE: Aortopexy is the accepted operative treatment for severe and localized tracheomalacia (TM). The standard surgical approach involves a left anterior thoracotomy, often under bronchoscopic control. We report the results of aortopexy in 28 children with severe and localized TM; 12 had a left lateral muscle-sparing approach and one had a thoracoscopic aortopexy.
METHODS: Retrospective review of patient notes was performed to note the indications, investigation findings, and postoperative course after aortopexy.
RESULTS: The median age at aortopexy was 5 months. The indications included

Tracheomalacia (TM) is abnormal flaccidity of the trachea caused by inadequate cartilaginous support by the C-shaped tracheal rings. This defect generally results in various degrees of dynamic narrowing of the airway lumen. TM usually presents with expiratory stridor, wheeze, and respiratory obstruction. TM is usually associated with tracheoesophageal fistula and esophageal atresia or with other thoracic lesions of vascular rings and tumors. We report a well-documented case of a 20-month-old boy who presented to our institution with a severe history of obstructive sleep apnea and adenotonsilla

Cervical osteophytosis, a common manifestation of degenerative spondylosis, can rarely exert mass effect to compromise adjacent airway structures. Acquired tracheomalacia secondary to anterior cervical osteophytes is exceptionally uncommon and results from dynamic airway collapse due to weakened tracheal cartilaginous support. Tracheomalacia may present with nonspecific respiratory symptoms such as dyspnea, cough, and orthopnea, and diagnosis is best established with direct visualization on bronchoscopy. We report a rare case of localized upper tracheal tracheomalacia caused by cervical diffus

The noninvasive diagnosis of impaired mechanical integrity or compliance of the trachea is most accurately made by fluoroscopic observation recorded on video tape or cineradiography, with or without benefit of artificial contrast media (contrast tracheography). In particular, localized buckling, collapse or dilatation indicative of focal tracheomalacia may thus be diagnosed in vivo and correlated with diseases of the central airways. Congenital tracheomalacia is a rare, bu, well described entity. Cases of acquired tracheomalacia occur with increasing frequency, but are often not clearly recogn

Tracheomalacia (TM), the most common congenital tracheal defect, is due to compromised cartilage integrity, manifesting in the narrowing of expiratory airways and various respiratory symptoms. While TM is common in infants and toddlers, it is rarely found in adults, often due to acquired injuries or chronic lung diseases. We present a unique case of a 67-year-old man with persistent dyspnea and hoarseness for two years. Despite a history of smoking, he had no signs of pulmonary disease and had a consistently high oxygen saturation during episodes of dyspnea. His dyspnea was of unknown etiology

OBJECTIVES: Congenital tracheomalacia can be the cause of respiratory failure in young children. Although the indication for surgical treatment has already been discussed vigorously, no clear guidelines about the modality are available.
METHODS: Through a sternotomy approach, a combination of posterior pexy and anterior tracheopexy using a tailored ringed polytetrafluoroethylene prosthesis is performed. Patient demographic characteristics, as well as operative details and postoperative outcomes, are included in the analysis.
RESULTS: Between 2018 and 2022, 9 children underwent the operation
