BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In DanceSport, athletes train for many years to develop a very specific posture. Presently there are few data as to whether these adaptations are habitual or cause permanent anatomical changes to the spine. The aim of the current study was to evaluate lumbar lordosis and thoracic kyphosis of the international level DanceSport dancers using track and field athletes as controls.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty competitive DanceSport couples (15 men aged 23.4±6.6 years; 15 women aged 22.5±6.4 years) and 29 track and field athletes (16 mean aged 27±4.4 years and 13 women a

BACKGROUND: Hamstring muscle strains often recur. The authors studied the effect of the grade of initial injury on the subsequent risk of reinjury.
HYPOTHESIS: No difference in reinjury rate between acute low-grade (grades I and II) and high-grade (III and IV) hamstring muscle strains would be seen.
STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study (prognosis); Level of evidence, 1.
METHODS: Between 1999 and 2007, the authors managed 165 elite track and field athletes with acute, first-time unilateral hamstring muscle strains. Strains were classified into 4 grades (I, II, III, and IV) based on knee active range o

The purpose of this study was to compare the muscle-to-bone (MBR) and soft tissue-to-bone ratios (SBR) of 459 track and field athletes across event groups to identify differences in MBR and SBR. Dual X-ray absorptiometry provided total and regional (i.e., arm, leg, trunk) lean mass (LM), fat mass (FM), and bone mineral content (BMC). MBR was calculated by dividing LM by BMC. The SBR was calculated by dividing LM+FM by BMC. Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to compare ratios across event groups. Dunn's post-hoc tests were utilized to adjust for multiple comparisons. Total MBR for females was highe

Satellite altimetry is a primary source for deriving the global marine gravity field. Leveraging Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) multi-beam laser altimetry, this study constructs global 1-arcminute gridded models of marine deflection of the vertical (DOV) and free-air gravity anomaly, referenced to the GRS80 ellipsoid. Because orbit inclination limits azimuthal sampling, the sparse cross-track geoid gradient coverage means the meridional component is generally more accurate than the prime-vertical component. ICESat-2's ATLAS (Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System) em

OBJECTIVES: Collegiate Track and Field and Cross-Country (TF-XC) athletes require high training volumes, potentially contributing to their elevated injury rates. But concurrent examination of musculoskeletal injury (MSKI), health, anatomical structure, and performance is rare. This study's purpose was to compare training habits, MSKI history, bone health, body composition, muscle morphology, and neuromuscular characteristics between collegiate TF-XC athletes and controls.
METHODS: Thirty TF-XC athletes (n=21 females; n=9 males) and 30 physically active, sex-, age-, and body mass-matched contr

Recently, the comparison of "periodized" strength training methods has been a focus of both exercise and sport science. Daily undulating periodization (DUP), using daily alterations in repetitions, has been developed and touted as a superior method of training, while block forms of programming for periodization have been questioned. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to compare block to DUP in Division I track and field athletes. Thirty-one athletes were assigned to either a 10-wk block or DUP training group in which sex, year, and event were matched. Over the course of the study, there w

The incidence and nature of stress fractures and the relationship of potential risk factors to stress-fracture history were investigated retrospectively in a group of 53 female competitive track-and-field athletes. Forty-five stress fractures, diagnosed by clinical findings and bone scan, radiograph, or CT scan, were reported in 22 women. Tibial fractures were the most common (33%). There was no significant difference in bone mineral density at the lumbar spine and tibia/fibula or in percentage body fat and total lean mass when comparing the groups with and without a stress-fracture history. In this study, we examined 1) the prevalence of maltreatment in British junior elite track and field athletes, 2) relationships between maltreatment, psychological safety, and subjective vitality, and 3) whether maltreatment is indirectly related to subjective vitality via psychological safety. Using a cross-sectional design, British junior elite track and field athletes (N = 254) completed measures of maltreatment (physical, psychological, non-contact sexual and neglect), psychological safety and subjective vitality. Results showed that nearly three-quarters experienced maltreatment in sport

Australian track and field has a strong focus on State and National elite youth programmes as the development pathway to elite senior international competition. Yet, there are no clearly defined parameters for appropriate training volumes, training intensities or competition schedules for youth athletes. This study sought to examine the training profiles of, and injuries suffered by, elite youth track and field athletes between the ages 13 and 17 years. The participants were 103 elite NSW athletes (age 17.7 ± 2.4 years, 64% girls) who recalled, through a questionnaire, their training profiles

Due to sexual dimorphism, men outperform women in athletics, and thus they compete separately. Although the difference, called "the performance sex gap", was thought to be stable across the lifespan, our research suggests that the gap changes with age. In our study, using publicly accessible databases, we collected data about top performances by men and women 5 to 100 years old in 18 track-and-field events sorted into three categories: running, jumping, and throwing. Our results suggest that the magnitude of the performance sex gap changes across the lifespan; it emerges in prepubertal childre

The primary aim was to report clinical features at initial assessment after hamstring injury, and the association of these with the mechanism of injury, BAMIC, and time to return to full training (TRFT). A secondary aim was to monitor functional milestones during rehabilitation and assess these relative to BAMIC and TRFT. Hamstring injuries in elite track and field athletes were eligible for inclusion. Clinical markers and the time to reach functional milestones in rehabilitation and TRFT were recorded. Low back pain and hamstring cramping/tightness in the week prior to acute injury were, inde
