Dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes is regulated by iron oxides: Insight into the influence on bacterial transformation.

The transportation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in manure-soil-plant continuums poses risks to human health. Horizontal gene transfer, particularly for bacterial transformation, is an important way for ARG dissemination. As crucial components in soils, iron oxides impacted the fates of various abiotic and biotic contaminants due to their active properties. However, whether they can influence the transformation of ARGs is unknown, which waits to be figured out to boost the assessment and control of ARG spread risks. In this study, we have investigated the effects of goethite, hematite,

Microbial degradation of 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane by a novel bacterial isolate: transformation mechanism and bioaugmentation.

To date, reports on the microbial degradation of 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)-ethane (BTBPE) by pure strains remain limited. Herein, a BTBPE-degrading strain--FX-1--affiliated with Bacillus velezensis was isolated for the first time. After 5 days of reaction, a maximum biodegradation efficiency of 72.6% was achieved for 1.0 mg/L BTBPE in the presence of 1.0 g/L glucose as a co-substrate at an initial pH of 7.2 and a temperature of 30°C. Eight identified biodegradation products indicated that debromination, ether bond cleavage and aromatic ring cleavage were the primary biotransformation path

Soil minerals and organic matters affect ARGs transformation by changing the morphology of plasmid and bacterial responses.

Soil environment is a vital place for the occurrence and spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Extracellular DNA-mediated transformation is an important pathway for ARGs horizontal transfer and widely exists in soil environment. However, little information is available on how common soil components affect ARGs transformation. Here, three minerals (quartz, kaolinite, and montmorillonite) and three organic matters (humic acid, biochar, and soot) were selected as typical soil components. A small amount in suspension (0.2 g/L) of most soil components

Lysosome-related organelle genes are required for mitochondrial transformations during bacterial infections in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Detecting and responding to pathogenic bacteria is an essential function of eukaryotic cells. As bacteria-derived organelles, mitochondria carry lipids, proteins, and other molecules such as iron which are required for bacterial growth, and thus are subject to pathogenic bacterial attack. In fact, mitochondrial morphology and function are often altered during early bacterial infection. However, the mechanism by which bacterial pathogen attack triggers mitochondrial responses is unknown. Here, we demonstrate that infection by the pathogenic bacterium Staphylococcus aureus or Pseudomonas aerugin

High-resolution genomic analysis reveals abundant mosaic outcomes of bacterial natural transformation independent of MutS-mediated mismatch repair.

The nature and breadth of horizontal gene transfer outcomes specific to natural transformation remain elusive. We present a genome-scale analysis of location-specific information associated with single-round transformation events in Bacillus subtilis. Using distributed selectable markers to remove location bias, we found transformant genomes often contained multiple discontinuous segments of donor sequence in close proximity. These highly mosaic sites span multiple length scales, with an abundance of shorter segments. We found that the small segments scale with the length of the nearest stretc

Multi-omics analyses of cancer-linked clinical salmonellae reveal bacterial-induced host metabolic shift and mTOR-dependent cell transformation.

Salmonellae are associated epidemiologically and experimentally with colon cancer. To understand how Salmonella induces cell transformation, we performed multi-omics and phenotypic analyses of Salmonella clinical strains isolated from patients later diagnosed with colon cancer (case strains) and control strains from patients without cancer. We show that high transformation efficiency is a frequent intrinsic feature of clinical (case and control) salmonellae, yet case strains showed higher transformation efficiency than control strains. Transformation efficiency correlates with gene expression,

Phytoplankton Producer Species and Transformation of Released Compounds over Time Define Bacterial Communities following Phytoplankton Dissolved Organic Matter Pulses.

Phytoplankton-bacterium interactions are mediated, in part, by phytoplankton-released dissolved organic matter (DOMp). Two factors that shape the bacterial community accompanying phytoplankton are (i) the phytoplankton producer species, defining the initial composition of released DOMp, and (ii) the DOMp transformation over time. We added phytoplankton DOMp from the diatom Skeletonema marinoi and the cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus marinus MIT9312 to natural bacterial communities from the eastern Mediterranean and determined the bacterial responses over a time course of 72 h in terms of cell nu

Correlation of bacterial community with phosphorus fraction drives discovery of Actinobacteria involved soil phosphorus transformation during the trichlorfon degradation.

Trichlorfon (TCF) is a broad-spectrum phosphorus (P)-containing pesticide, yet its effects on soil P fraction transformation and bacterial communities during the TCF degradation in soils is unknown. In this study, we investigated soil TCF degradation behavior at different contents of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg, and analyzed residual TCF contents and metabolites by gas chromatography mass spectrometry after 216-h incubation. Our results suggested that TCF was gradually degraded in soils and was be initially hydrolyzed to dichlorvos via P-C bond cleavage and then other P-containing metabolites. By an

Phylogenetic analysis and characterization of arsenic (As) transforming bacterial marker proteins following isolation of As-tolerant indigenous bacteria.

Marker proteins play a significant role in bacterial arsenic (As) transformation. Phylogenetic analysis and three-dimensional (3D) characteristics of As transforming bacterial marker proteins guide the evolutionary origin and As transforming potential of the species. Indeed, As-tolerant bacteria also show a significant level of As transformation. Hence, characterization of As transforming bacterial marker proteins, isolation of As transforming bacteria, and proper integration of the findings may guide to elucidate how bacteria transform As. Therefore, phylogenetic analysis and 3D characterizat

Bacterial load and transforming growth factor-beta: Predicting the extent of lung damage in pulmonary tuberculosis patients.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global health burden, with disease severity determined by the complex interplay between pathogen burden and host immune responses. Mycobacterial load and serum transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) are parameters potentially associated with disease progression and pulmonary tissue damage. TGF-β, as an immunoregulatory cytokine, plays a dual role in TB pathogenesis by suppressing protective immunity while contributing to fibrotic tissue remodeling. Despite their clinical relevance, the direct correlation between bacterial load, ser

A screening system to determine the effect of bacterial metabolites on MAdCAM-1 expression by transformed endothelial sinusoidal cells.

Mucosal addressin cell adhesion molecule 1 (MAdCAM-1) expression in high endothelial venules is regulated by bacterial metabolites emanating from the gut and the interaction of MAdCAM-1 with α4β7 integrin mediates lymphocyte diapedesis into gut-associated secondary lymphoid tissues. MAdCAM-1 thus controls the abundance of circulating immunosuppressive T cells that can reach malignant tissue and compromise the therapeutic efficacy of anticancer immunotherapy. Here we describe a biosensor-based phenotypic assessment that facilitates the high throughput screening (HTS)-compatible assessment of MA

Microbial degradation of short-chain chlorinated paraffins in marine environment: bacterial community responses, functional genes, transformation products, and metabolic mechanisms.

Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) are persistent organic pollutants that pose ecological risks to marine ecosystems. Their impacts on bacterial communities and environmental fate remain poorly understood. In this study, SCCP exposure significantly altered sediment bacterial diversity and composition, enriching key genera such as Halomonas, Pseudomonas, and Marinobacter. Six SCCP-degrading strains from these genera were isolated. Whole-genome and transcriptomic analyses identified key functional genes involved in 1,2,5,6,9,10-hexachlorodecane degradation, including oxidative stress resp

Release and bacterial transformation activity of plasmid-borne antibiotic resistance genes adsorbed on iron nanoparticles as induced by sulfide reduction.

Dissolved sulfides are widely distributed in anoxic soils and sediments and can readily reduce the ubiquitous iron(hydro)oxide nanoparticles (IONPs), which strongly adsorb extracellular antibiotic resistance genes (eARGs) and thus inhibit their transformation activity. Here, we investigated whether and to what extent sulfide-induced reductive dissolution of IONPs affects the release and transformation potential of adsorbed eARGs. As the concentration of Na2S increased from 0.05 to 5 mmol/L, the release ratios of adsorbed plasmid from hematite nanoparticles (HNPs) and goethite nanoparticles (GN

Haemophilus influenzae porine ompP2 gene transfer mediated by graphene oxide nanoparticles with effects on transformation process and virulence bacterial capacity.

BACKGROUND: H. influenzae is a natural competent bacterium that can uptake DNA from the environment and recombine into bacterial genome. The outbreaks of Brazilian purpuric fever, heavily polluted areas of a different H. influenzae biogroup - aegyptius - as well as gene transference between Neisseria meningitis make the transformation process an important evolutionary factor. This work studied the horizontal transference of the ompP2 gene from a multiresistant strain of H. influenzae 07 (NTHi), under the influence of graphene oxide nanoparticles in order to mimic an atmosphere rich in suspende

Characterization of bacterial nanocellulose cultivated on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) monomers via raman and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.

The potential of Komagataeibacter (K.) sucrofermentans to valorize polyethylene terephthalate (PET) monomers - ethylene glycol (EG) & disodium terephthalate (Na2-TPA) - and glucose into bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) membranes was investigated using Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Gravimetric analysis indicated higher BNC yields for K. sucrofermentans nurtured with EG (2.54 g L− 1) compared to pure glucose (2.00 g L− 1) and TPA (1.54 g L− 1). Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images showed that BNC derived from glucose had a dense interconnected fibrillar matrix with

Ammonium nitrogen and phosphorus removal by bacterial-algal symbiotic dynamic sponge bioremediation system in micropolluted water: Operational mechanism and transformation pathways.

Construct a bacteria-algae symbiotic dynamic sponge bioremediation system to simultaneously remove multiple pollutants under micro-pollution conditions. The average removal efficiencies of NH4+-N, PO43--P, total nitrogen (TN), and Ca2+ were 98.35, 78.74, 95.64, and 84.92 %, respectively. Comparative studies with Auxenochlorella sp. sponge and bacterial sponge bioremediation system confirmed that NH4+-N and TN were mainly removed by bacterial heterotrophic nitrification - aerobic denitrification (HN-AD). PO43--P was removed by algal assimilation and the generation of Ca3(PO4)2 and Ca5(PO4)3OH,
