Reducing Nematic-Isotropic Transition Temperature Improves Phototropic Actuation in Printable Liquid Crystal Elastomers.

Soft, phototropic polymer networks have broad potential use as stimuli-responsive, shape-morphing, and actuating materials. Despite their promising capabilities, phototropic materials that convert light-based stimuli into mechanical work have remained limited by low strain and force output. Azobenzene-functionalized liquid crystal elastomers (azoLCEs) are one common class of phototropic materials with high work densities and compatibility with additive manufacturing. While improvements in azoLCE photoactuation have been made, they tend to employ methods that require significant increases in op

Mechanism of glass transition temperature enhancement in multicomponent epoxy resins incorporating triazine rings.

Epoxy resins are widely used in electronic and structural applications. However, their use at high temperatures is limited by their glass transition temperature (Tg). Although the addition of multifunctional resins increases Tgvia crosslink density, the molecular-scale contribution of specific intermolecular interactions, such as π-π stacking, remains poorly understood in multicomponent systems. Here, we investigated the molecular-level mechanism of Tg enhancement in a multicomponent epoxy resin system incorporating a triazine-based epoxy resin, tris(2-epoxypropyl)isocyanurate (TEPIC), into a

Room-Temperature Perovskite Phase Transition of CsPbI3 for PV Manufacturing on Flexible Substrates.

Printing perovskite films typically involves a high-temperature treatment exceeding 150 °C, which limits the manufacturing of flexible devices. All inorganic CsPbI3 perovskite is particularly promising for commercialization due to its high thermal stability. Herein, we discovered that when using DMF precursors containing CsI and HPbI3 for fabricating CsPbI3 films, an isopropanol (IPA) antisolvent bath immersion treatment of the wet films can enable a direct and rapid formation of optically active perovskite black phases at room temperature without annealing. In situ photoluminescence and in si

Temperature-dependent phase transition microemulsions for enhanced transdermal delivery of finasteride and silodosin.

Finasteride and silodosin are potential combinations for management of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Simultaneous transdermal delivery can overcome reasons of their poor oral bioavailability. This was achieved via menthol-based microemulsion (ME) which can undergo thermoresponsive phase transition. Pseudoternary phase diagrams were constructed at room temperature and 32 °C using menthol (oily phase) and Tween 80 (surfactant) in absence and presence of ethanol or propylene glycol as cosurfactants. In absence of cosurfactant, phase behavior depended on temperature with part of liquid cryst

A Low Transition Temperature Mixture-based viscosupplementation complemented with celecoxib for osteoarthritis treatment.

Viscosupplementation consists of hyaluronic acid (HA) intra-articular injections, commonly applied for osteoarthritis treatment while non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely administered for pain relief. Here, HA and a NSAID (celecoxib) were combined in a formulation based on a low transition temperature mixture (LTTM) of glycerol:sorbitol, reported to increase celecoxib's solubility, thus rendering a potential alternative viscosupplement envisioning enhanced therapeutic efficiency. The inclusion of glucosamine, a cartilage precursor, was also studied. The developed formulati

Pressure-Driven Polar Orthorhombic to Tetragonal Phase Transition in Hafnia at Room Temperature.

Oxides are legendary for their complex energy landscapes, sensitivity to external stimuli, and property control through chemical substitution. Of these, the binary oxide HfO2 is one of the most fascinating because of the extraordinary number competing phases and opportunities to stabilize unique and useful properties. In this work, we combined synchrotron-based infrared absorbance and Raman scattering spectroscopies with diamond anvil cell techniques and first-principles calculations to explore the properties of polar orthorhombic hafnia (chemical formula HfO2:xY, where x = 12%) under pressure

Molecular origins of the pressure and temperature dependences of fluid viscosity and the glass transition.

This work examines the origin of the curious variation in the pressure activation volume with increasing pressure, where it initially decreases to a minimum before rising again. It has been shown that the initial decrease arises from compression of the fluid until it reaches a jamming packing fraction, at which point the system starts to exhibit elastic behavior, resulting in an increase in activation volume with further pressure. This regime is analyzed using a modification of the so-called shoving model, in which the extra volume required for molecular rearrangement is accommodated by elasti

Temperature-Triggered Nanoscale Morphological Transitions in a Synthetic Intrinsically Disordered Protein.

Peptide self-assembly and liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS), often mediated by intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs), are natural mechanisms that translate protein molecular features into complex nano- and mesoscale architectures. Although the thermodynamics and kinetics of these processes are well understood, synthetic materials integrating both functionalities remain rare. Inspired by the conserved IDR-assembly domain (AD) architecture of amyloidogenic proteins, we hypothesized that modular recombinant constructs combining LLPS-capable IDRs with β-sheet-forming ADs could generate mater

Toughening Ceramics down to Cryogenic Temperatures by Reentrant Strain-Glass Transition.

Ceramics, often exhibiting important functional properties like piezoelectricity, superconductivity, and magnetism, are usually mechanically brittle at room temperature and even more brittle at low temperature due to their ionic or covalent bonding nature. The brittleness in their working temperature range (mostly from room down to cryogenic temperatures) has been a limiting factor for the usefulness of these ceramics. In this Letter, we report a surprising "low-temperature toughening" phenomenon in a La-doped CaTiO_{3} perovskite ceramic, where a 2.5× increase of fracture toughness K_{IC} fro

Hydration Effects in a Guanidine Hydrochloride-Pyruvic Acid Low-Transition-Temperature Mixture: Physicochemical Insights.

A low-transition-temperature mixture (LTTM) composed of guanidine hydrochloride (GUC) and pyruvic acid (PA) in a 1:2 molar ratio was prepared, and the effect of water on its physicochemical, electrochemical, and structural properties was investigated. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a GUC-PA-based LTTM. Density (ρ), speed of sound (u), and conductivity (κ) were measured over the temperature range of 293.15-323.15 K. The excess molar volume (V E) of the pseudo-binary GUC-PA/water system was calculated and correlated using the third-order Redlich-Kister equation. Densit

Effect of glass transition temperature on the final morphology of nanoparticle-laden aerosol droplets.

The final morphology of spray-dried microparticles is a key factor in determining their chemical and physical properties, which are in turn important for pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and food manufacturing. It is well known that both the drying kinetics of evaporating droplets and the composition of the feed solution used to produce the aerosol droplets affect the morphology of the dried particles. Herein, the effect of varying the glass transition temperature of the core-forming block on the dried particle morphology is investigated for aqueous droplets containing bespoke diblock copolymer nano

Enhancing the Glass Transition Temperature of PMMA Particles via Internal Polymer-Salt Hybrid Interfaces.

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles are widely used due to their excellent dispersibility, surface tunability, and suitability for forming monodisperse polymer particles. However, the relatively low glass transition temperature of PMMA (typically around 114 °C) restricts its thermal applicability. In this work, we developed a one-step dispersion polymerization to prepare PMMA-salt-cluster hybrid particles and systematically examined the influence of Li salt concentration, counteranion, solvent composition, and monomer concentration. In methanol/water, monodisperse particles (Cv < 5%) we

Influence of surfactant on glass transition temperature of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles.

Poly(D,L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) is one of the most commonly used drug carriers in nanomedicines because of its biodegradability, biocompatibility and low toxicity. However, the physico-chemical characterization and study of drug release are often lacking the investigation of the glass transition temperature (Tg), which is an excellent indicator of drug release behavior. In addition, the residual surfactant used during the synthesis of nanoparticles will change the glass transition temperature. We thus prepared PLGA nanoparticles with polymeric (poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)) and ionic (di

Potential Roles of the Glass Transition Temperature of PLGA Microparticles in Drug Release Kinetics.

Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) has been used for long-acting injectable drug delivery systems for more than 30 years. The factors affecting the properties of PLGA formulations are still not clearly understood. The drug release kinetics of PLGA microparticles are influenced by many parameters associated with the formulation composition, manufacturing process, and post-treatments. Since the drug release kinetics have not been explainable using the measurable properties, formulating PLGA microparticles with desired drug release kinetics has been extremely difficult. Of the various propertie

Circular dichroism spectra of human hemoglobin reveal a reversible structural transition at body temperature.

Previously we have shown that human red blood cells (RBCs) undergo a sudden change from blocking to passing through a 1.3+/-0.2-microm micropipette when applying an aspiration pressure of 2.3 kPa at a critical transition temperature (Tc = 36.4+/-0.3 degrees C). Low-shear viscosity measurements suggested that changes in the molecular properties of hemoglobin might be responsible for this effect. To evaluate structural changes in hemoglobin at the critical temperature, we have used circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. The thermal denaturation curves of human hemoglobin A (HbA) and hemoglobin S

Low-Temperature Melting-Crystallization Transition in Perovskites With Self-Trapped Excitons for Photovoltaic Downconversion.

Self-trapped exciton (STE) emitters demonstrate exceptional luminescent downconversion (LDC) performance, achieving near-unity photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) and broadband emission that overcomes Stokes shift limitations in conventional fluorophores. While these properties originate from precisely engineered Jahn-Teller distorted centers through optimized ligand fields and quantum confinement, practical challenges in stability and solution processability have hindered photovoltaic integration. Swelling-Shrinking Behavior of a Hydrogel with a CO2-Switchable Volume Phase Transition Temperature.

Macromolecules exhibit rich phase behavior that may be exploited for advanced material design. In particular, the volume phase transition in certain crosslinked hydrogels is a key property controlling the transition between a collapsed/dehydrated and a swollen/hydrated state, thereby regulating the release and absorption of water via a temperature change. In this work, a simple and tunable system exhibiting a carbon dioxide (CO2)-switchable volume phase transition is introduced, which displays isothermal swelling-shrinking behavior that is activated by addition and removal of CO2, respectively

Structural transition of solid hydrogen between phases I and II at low temperatures.

The structural transition of solid hydrogen between phases I and II at low temperatures has been investigated to determine the detailed structure of phase II by performing quantum molecular-dynamic simulations. Molecular orientations are revealed to arrange orderly in the [0001] and [112¯0] lattice directions in phase II although it has a lower-symmetry P63/mmc lattice structure than phase I. Consequently, both molecular centers and orientations tend to stack in the ABAB fashion in the [0001] lattice direction when solid hydrogen transits from phase I to II. By monitoring the evolution of infr
