Formation of a Translational Science Professional Identity: A Heuristic Framework and Research Agenda.

Based upon substantive professional engagement over two decades and the collective action of diverse professionals, this conceptual paper proposes that translational science (TS) is best understood as a meta-discipline. As with Science, Technology, Education, and Mathematics (STEM) or Information Sciences, meta-disciplines rely on coherent professional identities. Positioning TS in this way foregrounds the need to develop such identities across diverse contributors. TS team members often begin with deep domain-specific expertise followed by acquisition of cross-cutting translational capabiliti

Alzheimer's disease-cancer research (inception to 2025): trends, themes, translational pathways, and insights from highly cited studies.

Alzheimer's disease-cancer research (ADCR) has gained increasing attention due to paradoxical epidemiological associations and shared yet oppositely regulated biological mechanisms; however, the field lacks an integrated synthesis of its intellectual and thematic structure. This study comprehensively mapped the longitudinal evolution, collaboration patterns, and conceptual architecture of ADCR. Scopus-indexed articles published between 1968 and 2025 were retrieved using a structured TITLE-ABS-KEY search strategy. Bibliometric indicators were analyzed using the Bibliometrix R package (Biblioshi

The Day I Was Told I Wasn't Doing Science-And Why I'm Grateful for It.

After being told that my work was "not independent enough" and that I was "not doing real science," I began to question how academic medicine defines success. Through teamwork in translational HIV-1 research and community-engaged programs like The Last Gift, I have come to see that independence is an illusion, and that collaboration, empathy, and connection are the true engines of discovery and impactful research. This reflection challenges the traditional, hegemonic, metrics of scientific achievement and calls for a broader definition that values mentorship, equity, and collective progress as

intmap: fast and flexible mapping of mobile DNA integration for basic and translational research.

SUMMARY: Integration of exogenous DNA into host cell chromatin is a hallmark of many virus and transposon lifecycles and the foundational basis for many modern cellular and genetic therapies. Defining integration sites (ISs) in a population of cells can accordingly inform fundamental aspects of mobile DNA biology and therapeutic treatment outcomes. Here, we describe intmap, a software that generalizes IS analysis to diverse data-types and experimental systems. intmap functions independently of strict library design assumptions and is highly tunable with respect to analysis parameters. The evolving role of artificial intelligence in ophthalmology: basic science, translation, and clinical integration.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Ophthalmology has emerged as the proving ground for medical artificial intelligence (AI) because of its imaging-centric workflows, standardized data acquisition, and well defined clinical endpoints. Recently, the field has started transitioning from narrowly trained, task-specific algorithms toward multimodal models that are trained on large datasets and can be adapted to many tasks. These models may integrate information from images, text, and clinical data and are increasingly trialed in real-world settings. This review examines recent advances and ongoing controversies in

Translating research into practice-implementation recommendations for pediatric rheumatology; Proceedings of the childhood arthritis and rheumatology research alliance 2020 implementation science retreat.

The translation of research findings into clinical practice is challenging, especially fields like in pediatric rheumatology, where the evidence base is limited, there are few clinical trials, and the conditions are rare and heterogeneous. Implementation science methodologies have been shown to reduce the research- to- practice gap in other clinical settings may have similar utility in pediatric rheumatology. This paper describes the key discussion points from the inaugural Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance Implementation Science retreat held in February 2020. The aim of t

Appropriate translational designs for determining causal force-based (manual therapy) treatment mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Treatment mechanisms of force-based manipulation (manual therapies) aim to explain not just "whether" the treatment works but "why" and "how" a treatment works. To date, a majority of studies have failed to address whether treatment mechanisms are causal, signifying that they are the steps or processes through which a manual therapy treatment leads to measurable changes in clinical outcomes. The objectives of this commentary were: 1) to outline various research designs capable of investigating causal treatment mechanisms, and 2) to illustrate each design type with examples drawn fr

Translational advances of exosomes in neurodegeneration towards precision healthcare: From biomarkers to therapeutic frontiers.

Exosomes are nanoscale extracellular vesicles (EVs) that mediate intercellular communication and carry proteins, lipids, mRNAs, and non-coding RNAs reflective of their parental cells. Their biogenesis, molecular composition, and ability to traverse physiological barriers, including the blood-brain barrier, position exosomes as powerful candidates for biomarker development and therapeutic delivery in neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs). In Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and prion disorders, exosomes not only mirror pathological processes but actively participate in

Targeting NAD+ in translational research to relieve diseases and conditions of metabolic stress and ageing.

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) plays a fundamental role in life and health through the regulation of energy biogenesis, redox homeostasis, cell metabolism, and the arbitration of cell survival via linkages to apoptosis and autophagic pathways. The importance of NAD+ in ageing and healthy longevity has been revealed from laboratory animal studies and early-stage clinical testing. While basic researchers and clinicians have investigated the molecular mechanisms and translation potential of NAD+, there are still major gaps in applying laboratory science to design the most effective tria

Genetics in ankylosing spondylitis - Current state of the art and translation into clinical outcomes.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is the prototypic form of axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). It is highly heritable, with studies conducted in twins and in unrelated cases and controls showing that the heritability for AS is much higher than those for inflammatory bowel disease or rheumatoid arthritis. To date, 116 loci have been identified, contributing to 28% of the genetic variation in the disease. These loci provide important clues into pathogenic pathways in the disease that have led to therapeutic advances such as the repositioning of IL-17 inhibitors in the disease. Much more research is curr
