Prostate specific antigen levels following transurethral resection of the prostate.

OBJECTIVE: Determine how serum prostate-specific antigen (t-PSA) levels and free PSA (f/t PSA) ratio change following transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty men with a mean age of 67.0 +/- 4.2 years (range 46 to 84 years) underwent TURP for BPH between May 2005 and October 2005. Preoperative assessment included symptom evaluation with the International Prostate Symptom Score (I-PSS) and the prostate volume estimation by transrectal ultrasound. Total PSA and f/t PSA ratio were assessed before the procedure, as well as 30, 60 and 180 days after the TURP.

[Comparative study of transurethral electrovaporization of prostate versus transurethral resection of prostate on benign prostatic hyperplasia].

OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficacy of transurethral electrovaporization of prostate (TUVP) with transurethral resection of prostate (TURP). METHODS: 206 patients with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) whose prostatic sizes were all less than 60 grams were randomly divided into two groups. 97 cases were treated by TUVP while the other 109 cases were treated by TURP. The patients who underwent either TUVP or TURP were followed up for 12-34 months with an average of 20 months postoperatively. RESULTS: Both groups showed the significant decline in the mean IPSS (international prost

Pubic symphysitis after transurethral resection of the prostate.

PURPOSE: Pubic symphysitis (PS) after urological operations is uncommon. This is a systematic single-institution review of patients with transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR-P) with the aim to determine the incidence of PS after TUR-P and to identify a risk profile. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the past 15 years, 12,118 transurethral operations were performed in our department, 33.4% (n = 4045) were TUR-P, and 84.6% (n = 3421) had routine suprapubic trocar placement. A systematic retrospective analysis identified 12 patients, who developed PS (0.297%). RESULTS: Median age was 69.5 years

Transurethral resection of the prostate revisited and updated.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Electrosurgical transurethral resection (TUR) of the prostate (TURP) has dominated symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (s-BPH) surgical treatment for almost a century. We analysed recent TURP publications, with emphasis on durability, morbidity, new technology advantages, future generation training and malignant disease. RECENT FINDINGS: TURP has declined due to medical therapy, but transcends other surgical challengers by proven outcomes durability over a decade. Adopting the modified-Clavien system may aid future morbidity comparisons. Properly used bipolar technolog

[Urethral strictures following transurethral resection of the prostate].

A series of 147 patients subjected to transurethral prostate resection (TUPR) are followed up for seven years with a special reference to urethral strictures development. The patients' age varies from 52 to 78 years, with an 18-month average postoperative observation term. The methods of diagnosis used comprise uroflowmetry, retrograde urethrography and urethrocystoscopy. Obstruction of the lower urinary ways and urethral strictures are documented in 16 cases (10 per cent). Usually, post-TUPR strictures occur within one to three months after the operation. A brief literature survey on the inci

'Cardiac' enzymes after transurethral resection of the prostate.

Postoperative serial determinations of serum total creatine kinase (CK) and the CK-B subunit (by immunoinhibition), and of total lactate dehydrogenase (LD) and isoenzyme LD-1 (by immunoprecipitation), were performed in 16 and 9 patients, respectively, after uncomplicated transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). Total CK remained unchanged. An early, modest increase in serum CK-B activity, accompanied by an unusually high CK-B/total CK relation, correlated significantly with duration of operation and amount of tissue resected. A slight, early elevation of the total LD level was not accom

Disseminated cryptococcosis after transurethral resection of the prostate.

A 63-year-old man presenting with acute retention and dysuria underwent transurethral resection of the prostate for suspected benign prostatic hypertrophy. Ten days postoperatively he developed disseminated cryptococcosis. Re-examination of the prostatic chips revealed cryptococcal prostatitis. Treatment consisted of amphotericin, flucytosine and transfer factor along with wedge resection of a pulmonary toruloma. He remains well 12 months after cessation of treatment. This appears to be the first case report in Australia of cryptococcal prostatitis with dissemination after transurethral resect

The risk and effectiveness of transurethral resection of prostate.

BACKGROUND: To advise a patient to have transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) needs information on the benefit and complications of the procedure. Quality assurance also needs present results to be compared with future ones. OBJECTIVES: The authors wanted to know: 1. Whether TURP can decrease theInternational prostate symptom score (IPSS) and improve the Quality of Life (QOL) scores concerning urination at 1.5 months post-operatively for at least 25 per cent of the pre-operative scores?; 2. What are the common medical diseases in this type of patient?; and 3. What are the mortality and i

The changing practice of transurethral resection of the prostate.

Introduction Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is considered the gold standard surgical treatment for lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia. The number of TURPs performed has declined significantly over the last three decades owing to pharmaceutical therapy. TURP data from a single institution for the years 1990, 2000 and 2010 were compared to assess the difference in performance. Methods A retrospective analysis was undertaken of all patients who underwent TURP between January and December 2010. These findings were compared with historical

[Usefulness of transurethral resection in cancer of the prostate].

We reviewed the records of 292 patients with prostatic cancer who had been submitted to transurethral resection (TUR) to elucidate the role of endoscopic surgery in the diagnosis and treatment of this condition. Re-staging TUR permits differentiation between stage A1 and A2 tumors. Of 20 patients classified as having stage A1 tumors, 4 were reclassified as A2 tumors and benefitted from subsequent radical therapy. Endoscopic surgery permitted correction of ureteral obstruction in those with advanced prostatic cancer. In 9 patients with obstructive anuria, percutaneous nephrostomy combined with

Granulomatous prostatitis with vasculitis. A sequel to transurethral prostatic resection.

An 80-year-old patient suffering from prostatism underwent repeated transurethral prostatic resection. Histologic examination of the prostatic tissue that was removed at the time of the second operation disclosed a granuloma with fibrinoid necrosis combined with necrotizing vasculitis. Only four cases of granulomatous prostatitis and vasculitis have been reported in the literature:two were generalized vasculitis, while in the two other instances, the vasculitis was confined to the prostate. We report an additional case of granulomatous prostatitis combined with vasculitis localized in the pros

Transurethral resection of the prostate in recurrent acute bacterial prostatitis.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the outcome of transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) in the treatment of refractory recurrent acute bacterial prostatitis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 2004 to 2013, 23 TURP for this indication were performed in 21 patients; two patients underwent it twice. The files of these patients were retrospectively analysed for outcome and side effects. TURP intended to remove as much infected tissue as possible under appropriate antibiotherapy. RESULTS: Twelve patients became free of symptoms during a follow-up of 3-108 months (median 44), two others became disease-free a

Randomized study of transurethral resection of the prostate and combined transurethral resection and vaporization of the prostate as a therapeutic alternative in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In recent years, various minimally invasive alternatives to transurethral resection have become available for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Transurethral electrovaporization has become popular, with reported improvements in subjective and objectives measures, but a high rate of postoperative irritative symptoms and lack of tissue for histologic examination are the two most commonly reported disadvantages of this procedure. To decrease the postoperative irritative symptoms while minimizing intraoperative and postoperative bleeding and also to obtain ti

The resected prostate weight matters in transurethral resection of the prostate in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia.

BACKGROUND: Although a notable proportion of patients report improvement in clinical outcomes following transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), symptoms persist in about 25% of cases, resulting in dissatisfaction with the treatment. Due to this dissatisfaction, several studies have been conducted to determine the parameters that can predict outcomes. These parameters include the resected weight and the resected weight fraction. However, there is ambiguity as to what constitutes an adequate resection. Even more, the effect of the resected weight on clinical outcomes in African men with

Transurethral resection of prostate syndrome: report of a case.

We report a case of transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) syndrome. A 78-year-old man with prostatic hypertrophy was scheduled for transurethral resection of the prostate under spinal anesthesia. 30 minutes after the end of the surgery, the patient presented signs of TURP syndrome with bradycardia, arterial hypotension, cyanosis, hypoxemia and coma. The electrolytes analysis revealed an acute hyponatremia (sodium concentration 125 mmol/L). Medical treatment consisted of hypertonic saline solution 3%, volume expansion, intubation and ventilation. The presented case describes a typical TURP
