Ready for takeoff? exploring United States health care providers' pretravel consultation priorities, gaps, barriers, and opportunities.

Pretravel consultation by healthcare providers (HCPs) with travel medicine expertise can mitigate travel-related health risks. This analysis aimed to understand US-based HCPs' pretravel consultation educational gaps, priorities, barriers, and opportunities. An electronic survey was conducted May-June 2024, using a convenience sample of HCPs identified through the Med Learning Group and travel specialists from the International Society of Travel Medicine and American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. In total, 205 HCPs completed the survey, including physicians (50 %), nurse practitione

Traveling with an Ostomy.

People undergoing ostomy surgery face an extended physiologic and psychosocial recovery. It is not uncommon to experience interruptions in work, pursuing life goals, relationships, physical activity, and social life. Even those with previous travel experience may feel inhibited by their new ostomy. Nurses, including those experienced in wound and ostomy continence, provide essential care to patients recovering from surgery and adjusting to their stoma. With counseling, education, and experience, patients can develop increasing competence and autonomy. This, in turn, helps an ostomate look forw

Antimicrobial prevention and therapy for travelers' infection.

International journeys are increasing and more than 70 million people from industrialized countries cross the borders of tropical countries every year. More than 50% of them will suffer from some form of infectious illness, ranging from mild travelers' diarrhea to severe dengue fever to fatal malaria, with a wide spectrum of microbiological entities. Travel-related respiratory infections, including TB, and sexually transmitted infections are also increasingly reported. Awareness of travel-related risk is not always adequate among international travelers. Specific training on travel medicine-re

Utilization of an Urban Syringe Service Program: Implications for Rural Pennsylvania.

BACKGROUND: Syringe service programs (SSPs) provide health-promoting and preventative care for people who use drugs (PWUDs) and can reduce the risk of overdose and infectious diseases. SSPs are predominantly located in urban areas. PURPOSE: This study aims to (1) assess the number of syringes distributed and the services utilized at an SSP in Pennsylvania, and (2) assess the number of participants traveling to the SSP from other counties, and the rurality of each county. METHODS: A convenience sample of individuals utilizing SSP services over 2 years was used. Data collected at the visits we

Environmental Impact of Physical Visits and Telemedicine in Nursing Care at Home: Comparative Life Cycle Assessment.

BACKGROUND: The health care sector contributes notably to environmental harms, impacting human and ecosystem health. Hence, countries increasingly set ambitions to transition to environmentally sustainable health care, focusing on resource use, energy consumption, and patient travel. Telemedicine is often considered a promising solution to reduce travel-related carbon emissions. However, underlying environmental impact assessments lack important components such as staff travel and fail to adhere to standardized conduct and reporting. Moreover, assessments of telemedicine use in primary care ar

Limitations of typhoid vaccination for travellers.

Around one-third of travellers to endemic areas receive pre-travel typhoid vaccination, increasingly with the new parenteral vaccination Typhim Vi (Mérieux). More than 200 cases of Salmonella typhi and S. paratyphi infection are imported into the UK each year. Despite the widespread use of immunisation, non-specialist clinicians and the travelling public do not appear to fully appreciate the limitations of currently available vaccination. These limitations are not adequately highlighted in either the Green Book of Immunisation against Infectious Diseases (HMSO, 1992) or the new handbook Health

The changing landscape of travel health services in Canada.

Canadians are increasingly travelling to areas that would necessitate a pre-travel consultation. Changes in professional regulations in Canada allow greater autonomy of nurses and pharmacists, resulting in shifts in provision of travel health services. We surveyed 824 Canadian travel clinics, 270 (33%) of whom responded. Private clinics were most common, and more likely to offer extended hours and drop-in appointments. In one province, pharmacies dominated. Half the services were relatively new and a similar proportion saw fewer than 10 patients weekly; 1/3 had a single provider. The increased

An analysis of influenza prevention measures from air travellers' perspective.

BACKGROUND: The influenza A virus is easily transmitted through airborne saliva droplets disseminated by unprotected coughing or sneezing, particularly in a crowded, enclosed space. AIM: The purpose of this study was to analyse the knowledge, attitudes and practices of air travellers regarding influenza A preventive measures and to examine any significant differences in perceptions among different types of traveller groups. METHODS: This study used a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire and surveyed 1684 passengers at Taoyuan International Airport in Taiwan. The frequencies, mean score and ran

Integrating sexual and reproductive health into pre-travel consultations.

BACKGROUND: Casual sex during travel is a major preventable factor in the global transmission of sexually transmissible infections (STI). Pre-travel consults present an excellent opportunity for practitioners to educate travellers about sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and safety. This scoping review aims to explore and understand the extent to which SRH is included in pre-travel consultations. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Scopus, Medline and Web of Science were systematically searched for primary research articles exploring whether he

The experience of transportation to visit a nursing home resident: A case study.

Maintaining social connections in the community can be accomplished through transportation access and opportunities. This includes relationships between family and residents in nursing homes. Previous research supports the relationship between transportation, social support, and visitation of residents in nursing homes (NHs), however no empirical research to date explores this relationship of family member transportation as a means to visit their loved one in this setting. Guided by a case study approach, a sample of 11 (N = 11) family members of residents in nursing homes across North Central

A 1-km resolution dataset of affordability-constrained accessibility to elderly care facilities in China.

China's rapid population aging presents profound challenges for equitable institutional elderly care. Traditional spatial accessibility metrics typically neglect affordability constraints, leading to systematic overestimation of effective access for low-income older adults. We developed a national, 1-km resolution accessibility dataset for mainland China using an affordability-constrained Gaussian two-step floating catchment area (AC-Ga2SFCA) method that couples travel-time impedance with price-income affordability weighting. Household payment capacity is represented by a high-resolution per c

Zika virus disease: a public health emergency of international concern.

The emergence of Zika virus disease (ZIKV) in the Americas, mainly Brazil, has required the World Health Organization to take action to halt the spread of the virus by implementing preventive measures. This has resulted in increased surveillance of the virus and its potential complications. In the UK, cases of ZIKV have been reported in returning travellers. With the importance of this disease increasing, it is vital that nurses and other health professionals take the time to learn about ZIKV in order to pass on this knowledge to patients, enabling them to make informed choices about travel to

Schistosomiasis-an endemic parasitic waterborne disease.

Schistosomiasis (or bilharzia) is a chronic waterborne disease caused by parasitic worms or schistosoma in the tropics and sub tropics. Five main species exist, and common to all is its transmission to humans as a result of exposure to infested fresh water, into which the cercariae of the parasite are released by freshwater snails. With the rise of tourism and travel, more people are travelling to countries where schistosomiasis is a risk. Schistosoma haematobium is responsible for urogenital schistosomiasis, in which manifestations range from acute hypersensitivity reactions to bladder diseas
