Approach to skin problems in travellers: clinical and epidemiological clues.

RATIONALE FOR REVIEW: Travel-related skin problems are a common reason for healthcare consultations. We present a clinical approach to diagnosing skin diseases in travellers, emphasizing clinical examination and epidemiological clues such as travel history, incubation time and at-risk behaviours. KEY FINDINGS: Skin problems or manifestations of systemic infections are the third most common health issue encountered by travellers, though their causes and frequency may vary based on the season and destination. The four most frequent skin conditions affecting travellers include arthropod bites, s

Travel and tropical medicine practice among infectious disease practitioners.

BACKGROUND: Infectious disease specialists who evaluate international travelers before or after their trips need skills to prevent, recognize, and treat an increasingly broad range of infectious diseases. Wide variation exists in training and percentage effort among providers of this care. In parallel, there may be variations in approach to pre-travel consultation and the types of travel-related illness encountered. Aggregate information from travel-medicine providers may reveal practice patterns and novel trends in infectious illness acquired through travel. METHODS: The 1,265 members of the

Travel Medical Kit.

"The traveler's medical kit is an essential tool for both the novice and expert traveler. It is designed to treat travel-related illness and injury and to ensure preexisting medical conditions are managed appropriately. Travelers are at increased risk for common gastrointestinal issues during travel. Respiratory illnesses make up approximately 8% of the ailments present in returned international travelers. Approximately 12% of travelers experience a travel-related skin condition. First aid treatment for minor injuries is essential to all travel medical kits. The complexity ranges from a small,

Travel/Tropical Medicine and Pandemic Considerations for the Global Surgeon.

International travel goes hand in hand with medical delivery to underserved communities. The global health care worker can be exposed to a wide range of infectious diseases during their global experiences. A pretravel risk assessment visit and all appropriate vaccinations and education must be performed. Universal practices of water safety, food safety, and insect avoidance will prevent most travel-related infections and complications. Region-specific vaccinations will further reduce illness risk. An understanding of common travel-related illness signs and symptoms is helpful. Emerging pathoge

Relative distribution of reported illness presentations among ill international travellers: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Travel-related illness challenges clinical care and public health surveillance. Gastrointestinal, febrile/systemic, and respiratory presentations contribute substantially to morbidity, but their subgroup-specific distribution, which may help align clinical and public-health priorities with traveller profiles, has not been quantitatively synthesised. We aimed to describe the relative distribution of reported illness presentations across major syndrome/system categories among ill international travellers. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies publish

Health disparities among travelers visiting friends and relatives abroad.

For an estimated 10 million trips abroad by U.S. residents in 2002, "visiting friends and relatives" (VFR) was a purpose for travel. Made up largely of foreign-born U.S. residents and their children, this population shows disparities in the number of reported cases of many preventable travel-related illnesses compared with people who travel for other purposes, such as tourism. High-risk illnesses in VFR travelers include childhood vaccine-preventable illnesses, hepatitis A and B, tuberculosis, malaria, and typhoid fever. Gaps in the prevalence of disease and access to care both between countri

Travel-Associated Melioidosis in Non-Endemic Regions: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Travel-associated melioidosis, caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, is increasingly reported in non-endemic countries due to rising global travel. Understanding demographic, clinical, and outcome patterns of imported cases is important to improve recognition and management in settings where melioidosis is uncommon. Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and Scopus (last search: 24 September 2025) for case reports and case series of melioidosis diagnosed outside endemic regions and linked to travel exposure. Data were extracted on demographics, comorbidities, clinical m

How Do Level of Novelty and Camera Angle of Tourism-Themed Short Videos on Douyin Influence Potential Travelers' Behavioral Intentions?

The advent of short video apps like Douyin has greatly popularized the practice of sharing travel experiences in the form of live-streaming or prerecorded videos. With the breakout of COVID-19, the feasibility and appeal of physical travel were substantially undermined such that people now become increasingly dependent on watching short videos as a means of consuming travel-related content. This revolutionary change in the landscape of destination marketing is reshaping the tourism industry, which calls for research efforts of both scholars and practitioners. Our study aimed to investigate how

[Travel vaccinations].

Vaccinations are an integral part of pre-travel care. Gaps in routine vaccination should be closed. In particular, measles and influenza are important in the context of travel medicine. Vaccinations against yellow fever and meningococcal disease may be required for international travel. This article provides information on these and other travel vaccinations against hepatitis A, typhoid fever, rabies, Japanese encephalitis and cholera.Yellow fever endemic areas are located in Africa and in South America; there is no yellow fever in Asia. The meningococcal vaccine (A, C, W, Y) is required for p

Incidence of dengue fever in Israeli travelers 2008-2019.

BACKGROUND: Dengue virus (DENV) is a frequent travel-related infection, but longitudinal data on its incidence is limited. We aimed to study temporal trends of travel-related DENV burden and its geographical sources. METHODS: All cases of laboratory-confirmed DENV infection diagnosed at the Central Virology Laboratory of the Israeli Ministry of Health during 2008-2019 were evaluated. Numbers of Israeli tourist-entries to DENV endemic countries were available from the UN World Tourist Organization (UNWTO) database. DENV attack rates were calculated as cases per 100,000 traveler-entries. In add

Effects of COVID-19 Non-Pharmacological Interventions on Dengue Infection: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Non-pharmacological interventions (NPIs) implemented during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic have demonstrated significant positive effects on other communicable diseases. Nevertheless, the response for dengue fever has been mixed. To illustrate the real implications of NPIs on dengue transmission and to determine the effective measures for preventing and controlling dengue, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the available global data to summarize the effects comprehensively. We searched Embase, PubMed, and Web of Science in line with PRISMA (Preferred Report

Travel-associated zoonotic bacterial diseases.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Bacterial zoonoses are increasingly described in association with travel. Some bacterial zoonoses constitute important causes of post-travel illness. We focus on leptospirosis and rickettsiosis - the most common travel-associated bacterial zoonoses. RECENT FINDINGS: Leptospirosis is regarded to be the most common zoonotic disease worldwide. In industrialized countries recreational exposures, both domestic and overseas, are increasingly becoming a major source of infection. Asymptomatic infection is rare among travelers. Rickettsial diseases account for approximately 1.5-3.5
