Serum Iron Analytes in Healthy and Diseased Florida Manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris).

Serum iron concentration is usually decreased in true iron deficiency and with inflammatory disease in man and domestic animals. Serum total iron binding capacity (TIBC) may be increased in true iron deficiency and decreased with inflammatory disease. This prospective study was designed to measure serum iron analytes in healthy free-ranging and housed Florida manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris) of both sexes and various ages and to evaluate the effects of diseases common to manatees on these analytes. Blood samples were collected without anticoagulant from 137 healthy free-ranging manate

Cerebral and cardiac congenital malformations in neonatal West Indian manatees (Trichechus manatus).

Strandings of live new-born West Indian manatees (WIMs; Trichechus manatus) are one of the main challenges for the conservation of this species in Brazil, particularly in the northeastern states. Congenital malformations (CMs) are rare in sirenians. We identified CMs in two of 19 stranded WIMs that were rescued, rehabilitated and subjected to complete pathological examinations in Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte States between 1992 and 2017. In case 1, dilation of the cerebral lateral and fourth ventricles with abundant cerebrospinal fluid (internal hydrocephalus), was diagnosed. Furthermore, thi

Characterization of kidney epithelial cells from the Florida manatee, Trichechus manatus latirostris.

The West-Indian manatee, Trichechus manatus latirostris, is a herbivorous marine mammal found in the coastal waters of Florida. Because of their endangered status, animal experimentation is not allowed. Therefore, a cell line was developed and characterized from tissue collected during necropsies of the manatees. A primary cell culture was established by isolating single cells from kidney tissue using both enzymatic and mechanical techniques. Primary manatee kidney (MK) cells were subcultured for characterization. These cells were morphologically similar to the cell lines of epithelial origin.

Endoparasite survey in Amazonian manatees (Trichechus inunguis) under rehabilitation in the Peruvian Amazon.

Manatee populations are declining worldwide, and all currently existing species are considered vulnerable by the IUCN. The most common problems during nurturing young Amazonian manatees, Trichechus inunguis, in rescue centres are of gastrointestinal nature leading to inappetence, diarrhoea, cachexia and even death. Endoparasites play an important role in the well-being of wildlife in captivity as well as in the wild, though information about relevant protozoan and metazoan endoparasites in Amazonian manatees is still scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to find endoparasites in T. inunguis by a

SEROPREVALENCE OF TOXOPLASMA GONDII IN CAPTIVE ANTILLEAN MANATEE (TRICHECHUS MANATUS MANATUS) IN BRAZIL.

Antillean manatees ( Trichechus manatus manatus) are aquatic mammals that inhabit marine waters from Central America to the northeastern region of Brazil, and they are an endangered species. Infection with Toxoplasma gondii through intake of water or food contaminated with oocysts has been reported among marine mammals. The present study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of antibodies to T. gondii in West Indian manatees living in captivity in northeastern Brazil. Serum samples from 55 West Indian manatees from three different captive groups were tested for T. gondii antibodies by means of the

Antillean manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus Linnaeus, 1758) Tongue Morphology and Adaptive Herbivorous Implications.

Morphological study of the tongue is an interesting way of understanding evolutionary processes associated with feeding habits. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to describe the tongue morphology of the Antillean manatee and to understand possible morphological relationships with its way of capturing food. Macroscopic dissections and light and scanning electron microscopy analyses of seven manatee tongues were performed. The tongue in Antillean manatees is a muscular and robust organ, divided into apex, body, and root. It is firmly adhered to the floor of the oral cavity. Lingual pap

ESOPHAGEAL MEASUREMENT OF CORE BODY TEMPERATURE IN THE FLORIDA MANATEE (TRICHECHUS MANATUS LATIROSTRIS).

Cold-stress syndrome (CSS) is one of the leading natural threats to free-ranging Florida manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris). Cold water exposure below the species' acceptable physiologic range is a frequent occurrence for manatees during cold weather months causing CSS-induced systemic illness and significant annual mortality. Although CSS is a commonly presented condition at manatee rehabilitation facilities, the core body temperatures in CSS manatees are currently unknown due to the lack of clinically applicable and accurate temperature measurement methodologies. Our objective was to

The genome of African manatee Trichechus senegalensis reveals secondary adaptation to the aquatic environment.

Sirenians exhibit unique aquatic adaptations, showcasing both convergent adaptive features shared with cetaceans and unique characteristics such as cold sensitivity and dense bones. Here, we report a chromosome-level genome of the African manatee (Trichechus senegalensis) with high continuity, completeness, and accuracy. We found that genes associated with osteopetrosis have undergone positive selection (CSF1R and LRRK1) or pseudogenized (FAM111A and IGSF23) in the African manatee, potentially contributing to the dense bone formation. The loss of KCNK18 may have increased their sensitivity to

Neonatal Abandonment and Hydrocephalus in Antillean Manatees (Trichechus manatus manatus): Is There a Causal Relationship?

Manatees are semi-social animals, with the mother-calf relationship being considered long-lasting for the species. However, some events lead to the separation of this pair. Orphaned manatee calves can be adopted by other females of the same species. However, if this does not happen and a healthy calf strand is rescued, immediate release represents the best option for the individual. But when immediate release becomes unviable, the animals are taken to rehabilitation centers and can die from various causes. A newborn Antillean manatee was rescued in the north of Brazil, and the attempt at immed

Vertebral anatomy in the Florida manatee, Trichechus manatus latirostris: a developmental and evolutionary analysis.

The vertebral column of the Florida manatee presents an unusual suite of morphological traits. Key among these are a small precaudal count, elongate thoracic vertebrae, extremely short neural spines, lack of a sacral series, high lumbar variability, and the presence of six instead of seven cervical vertebrae. This study documents vertebral morphology, size, and lumbar variation in 71 skeletons of Trichechus manatus latirostris (Florida manatee) and uses the skeletons of Trichechus senegalensis (west African manatee) and Dugong dugon (dugong) in comparative analysis. Vertebral traits are used t

Brevetoxicosis in Florida manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris): Plasma proteomics for Florida red tide biomarkers.

Florida manatees face recurring exposure to brevetoxins, a suite of neurotoxins produced by the dinoflagellate Karenia brevis, through inhalation and forage. Near annual blooms in the Gulf of Mexico lead to repeated epizootics and mass strandings. Although stranded manatees are often rescued and receive palliative care, plasma biomarkers for health surveillance and diagnostic decision making remain limited. To investigate mechanisms and identify biomarkers, we applied TMT plasma proteomics comparing exposed and unexposed manatees. The relative abundances of multiple manatee plasma proteins, es

Parasite fauna of wild Antillean manatees (Trichechus manatus manatus) of the Andean Region, Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Antillean manatees (Trichechus manatus manatus) are large herbivorous aquatic mammals living in limited areas of South, Central and North America. As with other aquatic mammals, Antillean manatees can be infected by a variety of protozoan and metazoan parasites, some of them with zoonotic potential, which affect not only their welfare but also population health status. Therefore, we conducted the first epidemiological survey in Colombian free-ranging Antillean manatees to estimate their actual gastrointestinal parasite status. RESULTS: In total, 69 faecal samples were collected fr

PRESENTATION AND MANAGEMENT OF DENTAL PAD FRACTURES IN TWO FLORIDA MANATEES (TRICHECHUS MANATUS LATIROSTRIS).

The Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) has well-developed keratinized dental pads at the most rostral aspect of their mouth to assist with mastication. This unique development is thought to be an adaptive response to their highly abrasive diets that contain phytoliths and sediments that may accelerate dental wear. In May 2013, two Florida manatees presented with multiple fractures in their inferior dental pads. The fractures were successfully managed with nutritional modifications, dental pad trimming, and vigilant monitoring through behavioral husbandry training. Signs of sponta

REPRODUCTIVE NEOPLASMS IN WILD AND LONG-TERM CAPTIVE FEMALE FLORIDA MANATEES (TRICHECHUS MANATUS LATIROSTRIS).

Few reports of neoplastic diseases in manatees exist in the veterinary literature. This case series presents reproductive neoplasia noted in eight wild and long-term captive female Florida manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris) obtained through carcass recovery and animal rehabilitation programs between April 2009 and May 2014. All cases were evaluated histologically, and diagnoses of uterine carcinoma (n = 1), granulosa cell tumor (n = 2), ovarian adnexal tumor (n = 1), and leiomyoma (n = 5) were made. The underlying cause of tumor development and effects on reproductive success is current

Case report on helminth parasites of a necropsied Antillean manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus) in Belize.

Sirenians are parasitized by a number of nematodes and trematodes, most which appear to be host specific. Reports of parasitism in the West Indian Manatee, Trichechus manatus, exist for several regions within the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea, but there is a lack of parasitic data existing for the manatee subspecies living in the coastal waters of Belize. Herein, we report the first published record of parasites found in a deceased adult male Antillean manatee, Trichechus manatus manatus, recovered in the Placencia Lagoon, Belize. A thorough necropsy was performed w

Occurrence of antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii and Lepstospira spp. in manatees (Trichechus inunguis) of the Brazilian Amazon.

The presence of Toxoplasma gondii and Leptospira spp. antibodies was investigated in 74 manatees (Trichechus inunguis [Mammalia: Sirenia]) kept in captivity in two rescue units in the northern region of Brazil. Antibodies to T. gondii were detected in 29 (39.2%) of 74 animals by using the modified agglutination test (titer, 1:25). For antibodies against Leptospira spp., sera were diluted 1:50 and tested against 24 strains ofleptospires by microscopic agglutination microtechnique, and positive samples were end titrated. Twenty-three (31.1%) of 74 animals were reactive to four serovars (Patoc 21

Corneal vascularization in the Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) and three-dimensional reconstruction of vessels.

The cornea of the Florida manatee is unique and unusual in its anatomy in that blood vessels have been found throughout. In all other animal species, this is considered a pathological condition impeding vision, and is usually caused by injury or trauma. The purpose of this study was to more clearly describe corneal vascularization by examining the architecture through three-dimensional reconstruction in order to find possible patterns in size, distribution, and location of blood vessels relative to gender, age, location, and season.
