Trichomoniasis is the most common sexually transmitted infection. It is caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. Nitroimidazoles, particularly metronidazole and tinidazole, have been the main treatment options for decades. They still remain the standard treatment, and resistance to them is relatively rare. However, cases of resistance do occur, and the side effects can be significant. This highlights the urgent need for new drugs with different mechanisms of action. Promisingly, several innovative leads have emerged. Interesting drug targets in T. vaginalis include two β-carbonic anhydras…

Clinical infection with Trichomonas vaginalis (T. vaginalis) in the neonate is an unusual occurrence. We present a case of T. vaginalis in a 2-week-old girl with vaginal discharge. Our patient had complete resolution of symptoms after treatment with metronidazole. We found few references in the medical literature on the treatment of this condition. This report discusses the pathogenesis and treatment of T. vaginalis in the neonate.

A 36-year-old woman with symptomatic metronidazole-resistant trichomonal vaginitis for 10 years had a total of 22 courses of treatment with either metronidazole or tinidazole according to different schedules. The minimum trichomonicidal concentration of metronidazole for the strain of Trichomonas vaginalis isolated from the patient was 160 microgram/ml compared with 1.25-10 microgram/ml for other freshly isolated strains. The former strain also showed a definitely decreased sensitivity to ornidazole and tinidazole (80 microgram/ml). The mechanisms behind the appearance of resistance in this cl…
