The examinations have been performed with glycoproteidic fractions of Trichophyton verrucosum (Tv-GP) and T. mentagrophytes (Tm-GP) purified by a method of gel chromatography. Trichophytins were intradermally injected at a dose of 2.0 ml (1.0 mg of protein) and the results were estimated after 24 and 72 h on the basis of differences in skin fold thickness (RGFS). In animals infected with lice or scabies in a farm free of trichophytosis the median value of RGFS was below 1.0 mm and maximal value was 2.0 mm. A mycological and immunological survey was performed in 26 patients with clinical signs of dermatophytid. Only 10 patients fulfilled the main criteria of dermatophytid reactions, i.e. positive delayed skin test to trichophytin and dermatophyte isolated by culture. Trichophyton mentagrophytes--especially the zoophilic variant--was found in 9 patients of 10. One hundred and six patients with chronic dermatophytosis unresponsive to griseofulvin were studied. Trichophyton rubrum was the causative organism in 93% of cases. An obese 18-year-old girl without a history of atopic dermatitis or a systemic immunosuppressive disorder had severe measles with liver dysfunction and pneumonia. The effect of topical PUVA on the disease course and immunity of T. mentagrophytes dermatophytosis was investigated in guinea pigs. Animals which had been inoculated on nontreated skin showed mild erythematous lesions with scaling in a few days and then developed the most intense reaction between days 10 and 14. Sebaceous adenomas and squamous cell carcinoma developed in a male patient in addition to viral, mycotic and bacterial infections, several years after the removal of three malignant tumors from his lower gastrointestinal and urinary tract. Skin tests with trichophytin, candidin, and mixed bacteria were negative. Various aspects regarding cutaneous changes associated with colorectal and bladder carcinomas are discussed.

A deficiency in cellular immunity was demonstrated in a patient suffering from polycythaemia rubra vera in the myelofibrosis stage. Intradermal reactions to classical antigens (candidine, trichophytine, streptokinase, streptodornase, tuberculine) were negative, as was the di-nitrofluorobenzene test. However, the T lymphocyte count was normal. There was no disturbance in humoral immunity. Phagocytosis was normal but leucocyte migration, studied in vitro, was nil. The possibility of an intrinsic abnormality in the polynuclear neutrophil is evoked.

We report on 9 confirmed cases of tinea imbricata (Tokelau, infection due to Trichophyton concentricum) out of 16 family members. They had a common mother with three different fathers. The genetic analysis of the family suggests an autosomal dominant pattern of susceptibility. Most cases (8/9) were presented as concentric and lamellar forms. One patient also had onychomycosis due to T. concentricum. Only two out of nine cases had a positive response to trichophytin.

Cell-mediated response in 60 patients affected by acuminated condylomas has been studied; this was investigated with aspecific in vivo tests (intradermal-reaction with tuberculin, trichophytin, candidine) and by in vitro tests (blood test with cell count, lymphocyte typing, serum proteins, serum immunoglobulin) and was compared with a control group. The results obtained confirm the hypothesis that condylomas acuminata usually occurs in patients with well-preserved cell-mediated immunity.

A patient with cutaneous sarcoidosis is presented. The patient was diagnosed initially as borderline tuberculoid leprosy downgrading to borderline lepromatous leprosy and received a full 2 years of World Health Organization multibacillary drug treatment (MDT). Bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy on chest X-ray and cutaneous anergy manifested by negative Mantoux, candidin and trichophytin skin tests suggested the diagnosis of sarcoidosis. Histopathology confirmed this diagnosis. The subcutaneous nodule seen in this patient is a rare type of cutaneous sarcoidosis.

Cellular and humoral immune parameters were studied in 10 patients with alopecia areata totalis and universalis. Trends to low normal immunoglobulins levels and in vitro lymphocyte transformation to concanavalin A were observed. Serum CH-50 levels and skin test responses to mumps, candida, trichophytin and dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) not found in vitro. 1 patient with alopecia universalis of 33 years duration developed hair at the site of DNCB skin testing. The findings point to rather subtle immune defects in patients with this disease.

The histopathology of cutaneous lesions and trichophytin skin test responses was examined by light microscopy after the infection of strain 2 guinea pigs with Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients in the United States of America (USA) and Czechoslovakia (CSSR) were categorized by clinical, pathological, and radiological criteria as having Crohn's disease (CD) or ulcerative colitis (UC) and were tested with five skin test antigens [Candida, mumps, purified protein derivative (PPD), streptokinase-streptodornase (SK-SD), and trichophytin] at two different dilutions in an attempt to elicit some evidence of anergy. No significant differences were encountered between the USA and CSSR populations or between any patient group and its controls.

The cellular immune response of twelve patients from the Brazilian Amazon basin with lobomycosis were assessed. Delayed skin reaction to bacterial and fungal antigens, skin allograft rejection, and sensitization to dinitrochlorobenzene were studied. Delayed hypersensitivity reactions were investigated in 5 patients with febrile acne conglobata. Each of them had febrile periods, large abscesses and leukocytosis. Congenitally athymic "nude" (RNU/RNU) rats were grafted with syngeneic neonatal thymus glands and 30 days later cutaneously inoculated with Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Tinea imbricata is a chronic dermatophyte infection caused by Trichophyton concentricum affecting large areas of the skin surface. Spontaneous improvement is unusual and relapse after apparently successful treatment is common.
