Urinary tract infection by Trichosporon asahii.

Trichosporon asahii is a basidiomycetous yeast which causes white piedra and onychomycosis in immunocompetent hosts as well as various localized and disseminated invasive infections in immunodeficient hosts. Urinary tract infection caused by Trichosporon asahii is rare. One month after posterior urethral valve surgery a seven-month-old male child presented with fever, severe vomiting and crying on micturition for five--to six days. Yeast-like fungus was isolated in pure cultures from three consecutive urine samples. It was identified as Trichosporon asahii using standard techniques. The respon

White piedra and Trichosporon species in equatorial Africa. III. Identification of Trichosporon species by slide agglutination test.

Fifty-two Trichosporon strains isolated from Gabonese female patients 15-60 years, were studied. The identity of these strains was established by two different methods: the method proposed by Guého et al. (1992), based on mycological criteria, and a slide agglutination method performed with monospecific antisera prepared in our laboratory. The final results show a perfect correlation between the two methods, which allowed us to identify 25 strains of T. mucoides, 21 strains of T. inkin and seven strains of T. asahii. The results of the agglutination tests performed with 24-h-old subcultures gr

Trichosporon inkin peritonitis treated with caspofungin.

Trichosporon inkin is one of six pathogenic species of the genus Trichosporon and the etiologic agent of pubic white piedra. Trichosporon species have been reported as a cause of disseminated infections, particularly among immunosuppressed patients. We describe the third reported case of T. inkin peritonitis associated with peritoneal dialysis and the first to be treated with caspofungin.

Trichosporon beigelii, a new neonatal pathogen.

Trichosporon beigelii is an uncommon cause of sepsis in low-birth-weight infants. We present two cases of neonatal trichosporonosis and two cases of neonatal trichosporon colonization to familiarize neonatologists with this entity and to discuss management considerations. A 23-week-gestation male developed clinical evidence of sepsis on day 10 and was found to have "yeast" growing in a blood culture on day 12. Despite receiving amphotericin B, he expired within 2 days, at which time the organism was identified as T. beigelii. A 23-week gestation female developed fungal septicemia in the second

[An overview on Trichosporon asahii and its infections].

Trichosporon species cause systemic, mucosa associated and superficial infections which include white piedra. Disseminated fungal infections due to Trichosporon species have increased in the recent years. Hematologic malignancy, cytotoxic chemotherapy, and organ transplantation are the main risk factors for disseminated Trichosporon infections. Two most common species that cause the disseminated Trichosporon infections are Trichosporon asahii and Trichosporon mucoides. Diagnosis and treatment of Trichosporon infections are difficult. Invasive trichosporonosis caused by T.asahii has a high mort

Trichosporon beigelii pneumonia in a neutropenic patient.

A case of pulmonary infection caused by Trichosporon beigelii is reported in an asthmatic patient undergoing steroid treatment who developed fever and lung infiltrates. Arthroconidia and blastoconidia were isolated from repeated sputum, bronchial aspirate and telescopic catheter samples. The infection coincided with neutropenia resulting from pyrazolone treatment. The response to amphotericin B treatment was favourable.

Systemic Trichosporon loubieri infection in a cat.

Our study describes a case of systemic Trichosporon loubieri infection in a cat with acute dyspnea, anorexia, and aggressiveness. Physical examination revealed multiple ulcerative cutaneous lesions on the abdomen, neck, and thorax. Thoracic radiographs and ultrasound showed multiple mediastinal nodules and marked pleural effusion, respectively. A cutaneous biopsy from the ulcerated wounds revealed necrogranulomatous dermatitis and panniculitis with numerous intralesional fungal hyphae. Fungal culture on fresh swab samples from the cutaneous lesions yielded growth of a fungal organism that was

Meningoencephalitis in a dog due to Trichosporon montevideense.

Meningoencephalitis due to infection with Trichosporon montevideense was diagnosed in a 4-year-old dog with a brief clinical history of rapidly progressing neurological signs that culminated in a comatose state. No significant gross lesions were found at post-mortem examination. Microscopically, a few scattered areas of pyogranulomatous inflammation with a few small, non-pigmented fungal hyphae were found within the cerebrum surrounding the lateral ventricles. A Trichosporon sp. was identified through culture of the brain and species was determined via sequence analysis of the internal transcr

Catabolism of aromatic acids in Trichosporon cutaneum.

Trichosporon cutaneum readily metabolized protocatechuate, homoprotocatechuate, and gentisate, but lacked ring fission dioxygenases for these compounds. Benzoic, salicylic, 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic, and gentisic acids were converted into beta-ketoadipic acid before entry into the Krebs cycle. Benzoic acid gave rise successively to 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, protocatechuic acid, and hydroxyquinol (1,3,4-trihydroxybenzene), which underwent ring fission to maleylacetic acid. Salicylate and 2,3-dihydroxybenzoate were both initially metabolized to give catechol. 2,3-Dihydroxybenzoate was the substrate for

Complicated Trichosporon asahii mastoiditis in immunocompetent child.

BACKGROUND: Trichosporon asahii is an opportunistic fungus that causes infections in immunosuppressed patients. It is rarely seen in children and immunocompetent hosts. The mortality rates are still high despite early treatment with proper antifungal drugs. Trichosporon asahii mastoiditis in an immunocompetent child makes this case challenging. CASE PRESENTATION: This report presents a case of Trichosporon asahii mastoiditis which was complicated by transverse sinus thrombosis, in an otherwise healthy 21-month-old girl, and successfully treated with voriconazole. Trichosporon asahii was isola

Chemoport-related Fungemia Caused by Trichosporon asahii.

Trichosporon asahii is a rare opportunistic fungal pathogen that causes fatal systemic infection in immunocompromised patients. Neutropenia developing due to malignancies is an important risk factor for fungal infection. Invasive infections due to T. asahii can be divided into disseminated and localized forms. The disseminated form is more common and usually occurs in neutropenic patients. The patient typically has an acute febrile illness that progresses rapidly to multiorgan failure. Here, we are presenting a case of fungal sepsis by invasive T. asahii in a 1-year-old child with Wilms Tumor.

Tenosynovitis caused by Trichosporon asahii in an immunocompetent patient.

Fungal infections have become a public health problem owingdute to their progressive increase in recent decades and high morbidity rates. Fungal bone and joint infections result from direct inoculation, contiguous infection spread, or hematogenous seeding of organisms. Trichosporon spp. are yeast-like basidiomycetes, with Trichosporon asahii being the most common pathogenic species. This article describes a rare case of tenosynovitis caused by Trichosporon asahii in an immunocompetent patient. Treatment with voriconazole resulted in an excellent clinical response.

Trichosporon and Antifungal Resistance: Current Knowledge and Gaps.

Trichosporon spp. are ubiquitous environmental and emerging opportunistic fungi that can be part of the normal microbiota of the skin, vagina, and gastrointestinal tract in humans and other animals. In a state of microbiota imbalance, both immunocompromised and non-immunocompromised patients are susceptible to trichosporonosis, which can present as either superficial infections, such as White Piedra, or deep-seated infections, such as fungemia. Due to intrinsic resistance or limited efficacy reported with fluconazole, polyenes, echinocandins, and flucytosine, voriconazole is currently recommen

Onycholysis and Chromonychia: A Case Caused by Trichosporon inkin.

Yeasts cause only 5-10% of onychomycosis; the most common yeast is Candida albicans, and rarely Trichosporon spp. is found. Recently, it has become an important cause of fungemia with a high mortality rate in immunocompromised patients. Superficial infections caused by Trichosporon spp., including piedra and onychomycosis, occur in immunocompetent patients. Herein, we report a case of a fungal nail infection characterized by onycholysis and chromonychia caused by Trichosporon inkin.

Endophthalmitis due to Trichosporon beigelii in acute leukemia.

We describe 2 patients with hematologic malignancy who developed endophthalmitis due to Trichosporon beigelii during the course of treatment with multiagent chemotherapy. Blood cultures revealed T beigelii for both patients. Although one of the patients was treated with fluconazole (FLCZ) and 5-fluorocytosine, the trichosporonous endophthalmitis was resistant to both drugs. This patient subsequently received amphotericin B (AMPH-B) therapy, and the eyes were treated with vitrectomy. The second patient also received AMPH-B for FLCZ-resistant trichosporonous chorioretinitis. In both patients, sy
