INTESTINAL PARASITES IN PECARI TAJACU AND SUS SCROFA DOMESTICUS IN THE CAATINGA FROM SOUTHEASTERN PIAUÍ, BRAZIL.

This study identifies gastrointestinal parasites in the feces of Pecari tajacu (caititu) and Sus scrofa domesticus (domestic pig) in southeastern Piauí, Brazil. The region covers 2 protected areas, Serra da Capivara National Park and Serra das Confusões National Park, and surrounding communities. Fecal samples from 64 animals, 42 from domestic swine and 22 from caititu, collected between 1985 and 2013, were analyzed by optical microscopy. Helminths and/or protozoa were found in 64% of the domestic pig samples and 27% of the caititu samples, totaling 18 morphospecies: Nematoda, Spirurida (2 mor

Bilateral, perivulval cuticular pores in trichostrongylid nematodes.

A new hypodermal gland was discovered in female nematodes of the family Trichostrongylidae. Because the new structure appears to be associated with the vulva, it was named the perivulval pore. It is similar, based on light and scanning electron microscopy, to phasmids that are located laterally on the tails of nematodes of the class Secernentea. Like phasmids, perivulval pores are paired and bilateral, with cuticular ducts to the surface in the areas of the lateral chords. They are located slightly posterior to the vulva in Haemonchus contortus, Haemonchus placei, Haemonchus similis, Mecistoci

Requirement for two discrete stimuli for induction of the intestinal rapid expulsion response against Trichinella spiralis in rats.

Rats subjected to a 7-day abbreviated enteral infection with Trichinella spiralis subsequently reject more than 90% of a challenge infection within 24 h. This process is known as rapid expulsion. In these experiments parabiotic rats were used to examine the factors that establish rapid expulsion in the intestine. Induction with low to moderate doses of worms required exposure to two separate stimuli. These initiated different responses; one was readily transferred between parabiotic rats, whereas the second response was sessile and restricted to the intestine. These two responses interacted sy

Trichostrongylosis: a zoonotic disease of small ruminants.

In the present world a significant threat to human health is posed by zoonotic diseases. Helminth parasites of ruminants are one of the most common zoonotic organisms on the planet. Among them, trichostrongylid nematodes of ruminants, found worldwide, parasitize humans in different parts of the world with varying rates of incidence, particularly among rural and tribal communities with poor hygiene, pastoral livelihood and poor access to health services. In the Trichostrongyloidea superfamily, Haemonchus contortus, Teladorsagia circumcincta, Marshallagia marshalli, Nematodirus abnormalis and Tr

Effects of selected Palestinian plants on the in vitro exsheathment of the third stage larvae of gastrointestinal nematodes.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal parasites are one of the main restrictions to small ruminant production. Their pathological importance is primarily related to the major production losses, in quantity or quality, induced by the direct action of worms. Control of these parasites is based exclusively on the frequent use of anthelmintic drugs. However, the resistance to anthelmintics in worm populations after commercialisation of chemical drugs is now widespread. Therefore, there is a need to find new natural resources to ensure sustainable and effective treatment and control of these parasites. The

The comparative morphology of Marshallagia marshalli and Ostertagia occidentalis (Nematoda: Strongylida, Trichostrongylidae) by scanning electron microscopy.

The systematics of the Ostertagiinae is unsettled with no agreement on how many genera and species are present in cattle and sheep. Ten species of Ostertagiinae are commonly parasitic in cattle and sheep. In the global fauna, six of 13 ostertagiine genera are endemic to Iran. The life cycle of Ostertaginae is direct and ingested third-stage larvae after exsheatment in the rumen, penetrate the gastric glands in the abomasal mucosa where two parasitic moults occur before the L5 emerges from the gland. In the present work, Marshallagia marshalli and Ostertagia occidentalis, collected from the abo

Cytokine expression in naïve and previously infected lambs after challenge with Teladorsagia circumcincta.

Infection of sheep with Teladorsagia circumcincta triggers an immune response with predominantly type-2 (Th2) characteristics, including local eosinophila, mastocytosis and increased mucus production. In order to better understand the protective immune responses elicited, we used RT-PCR assays to define the changes in expression levels of a range of cytokine transcripts in lymph nodes draining the ovine abomasum following a challenge infection with T. circumcincta. This study compared the changes in cytokine expression in the abomasal lymph node following challenge with T. circumcincta in naïv

Trichostrongylus vitrinus: the influence of age of sheep and population size on the intestinal distribution.

Two age groups of parasite-free lambs, 4 months and 8 months, were infected with 50 000 infective larvae (L3) of T. vitrinus. A further group of 8 month old lambs were infected with 250 000 L3 T. vitrinus. The lambs were slaughtered at intervals after infection, and the size and linear distribution of their intestinal worm burdens examined and compared statistically. After the 50 000 L3 infections, it was found that a higher percentage of the initial inoculum had become established in the younger lambs but that there were no differences between the intestinal distributions of the population in

Variability in the Response against Teladorsagia circumcincta in Lambs of Two Canarian Sheep Breeds.

The increasing resistance to anthelmintics has necessitated the exploration of alternative control strategies of gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections. A sustainable option is genetic selection based on differences in susceptibility to GIN infection between and within breeds of sheep. Here, three-month-old Canaria Hair breed (GIN-resistant) and Canaria Sheep breed (GIN-susceptible) showed no significant between-breed differences after trickle infection with Teladorsagia circumcincta, whereas considerable individual variability was found in both breeds. Next, data from lambs of both breeds

Rapid expulsion of Trichinella spiralis: coinduction by using antigenic extracts of larvae and intestinal stimulation with an unrelated parasite.

The injection of cell-free extracts of larval Trichinella spiralis with Freund complete adjuvant immunized rats against a challenge infection with T. spiralis. Protection was expressed by a reduction of adult worms in the intestines 8 days after a challenge infection. The quantitatively more important rapid expulsion reaction could also be produced by immunization with antigen, provided immunized rats were also given an intestinal priming infection with adult Trichinella spiralis or an unrelated nematode, Heligmosomoides polygyrus. These parasites stimulated a local change in the intestine tha

Nematodes of the superfamily Trichostrongyloidea, particularly abomasal species, have severe clinical implications associated with high morbidity and potential mortality of exotic ruminants housed in zoological institutions. The life cycle and ecology of Trichostrongyloid gastrointestinal nematodes (TGN) present challenges in their control including development of anthelmintic resistance and reinfection in high-density managed herds. Copper oxide wire particles (COWP) are used to help control TGN infections in ruminants, administered as a bolus or a feed additive. This study investigated the e

Seasonal dynamics and potential interactions of haematophagous abomasal nematodes in two chamois populations in the Czech Republic.

BACKGROUND: Pathogenic blood-feeding nematodes, such as Haemonchus contortus and the invasive Ashworthius sidemi, infect a wide range of wild and domestic ruminants. While the spread of A. sidemi among European cervids has been studied, its presence in chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) remains poorly documented. Conversely, H. contortus is known to infect chamois, but previous research has relied mainly on cross-sectional necropsy studies, offering only a limited view of infection dynamics. In this study, we used a longitudinal molecular approach to assess the seasonal occurrence and transmission

Libyostrongylus dentatus n. sp. (Nematoda: Trichostrongylidae) from ostriches in North America, with comments on the genera Libyostrongylus and Paralibyostrongylus.

Libyostrongylus dentatus sp. n. is described from ostriches on farms from North Carolina and Texas. Nematodes were recovered from the posterior proventriculus and under the koilon lining of the gizzard; the parasites occurred in mixed infections with Libyostrongylus douglassii. The species is distinguished from congeners by the presence of a prominent, dorsal, esophageal tooth; in males by the structure of the dorsal ray and spicules; and in females by small eggs (52-62 microns in length), a sublateral vulva situated at 93% of the body length from the anterior, and a strongly curled, digitate,

Chromosomal genome assembly resolves drug resistance loci in the parasitic nematode Teladorsagia circumcincta.

The parasitic nematode Teladorsagia circumcincta is one of the most important pathogens of sheep and goats in temperate climates worldwide and can rapidly evolve resistance to drugs used to control it. To understand the genetics of drug resistance, we have generated a highly contiguous genome assembly for the UK T. circumcincta isolate, MTci2. Assembly using PacBio long-reads and Hi-C long-molecule scaffolding together with manual curation resulted in a 573 Mb assembly (N50 = 84 Mb, total scaffolds = 1,286) with five autosomal and one sex-linked chromosomal-scale scaffolds consistent with its
