Distribution of nitric oxide in the rock cavy (Kerodon rupestris) brain II: The brainstem.

In a recent paper, we described the distribution of Nitric oxide (NO) in the diencephalon of the rock cavy (Kerodon rupestris). This present paper follows this work, showing the distribution of NO synthesizing neurons in the rock cavy's brainstem. For this, we used immunohistochemistry against the neuronal form of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and NADPH diaphorase histochemistry. In contrast to the diencephalon in the rock cavy, where the NOS neurons were seen to be limited to some nuclei in the thalamus and hypothalamus, the distribution of NOS in the brainstem is widespread. Neurons immunoreac

[Study on specific distribution of afferent fibers in trigeminal sensory root of the rat].

OBJECTIVE: To study the distribution character of the trigeminal sensory afferent fibers in rat's trigeminal sensory root (RxV) and to explore the possibility of selectively injury of the pain afferent fibers. METHODS: The retrograde tracer fluorogold (FG) was injected into trigeminal spinal subnucleus and pontine nucleus respectively. After 7 days survival, the rats were sacrificed and the RxV was removed and sectioned. The distribution of FG at RxV was studied under fluorescent microscope and its character was analyzed. RESULTS: After being introduced into trigeminal spinal rostral nucleus

The distribution of afferent neurons in the trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus and the central projection of afferent fibers of the mylohyoid nerve in the rat.

Horseradish peroxidase conjugated to wheatgerm agglutinin (HRP:WGA) was injected into the proximal cut ends of three branches of the mylohyoid nerve in rats: the branch to the mylohyoid muscle (BrMh), the branch to the anterior belly of the digastricus muscle (BrDg), and the cutaneous branch (BrCu). HRP-labeled cells were detected in the ipsilateral caudal portion of the trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus (Vmes) and the ipsilateral ventromedial division of the trigeminal motor nucleus, except when HRP:WGA was applied to the BrCu. Morphologically, all labeled Vmes cells were of the pseudounipolar

Interpretation of some median anomalies as illustrated by cyclopia and symmelia.

Anomalies that involve the median plane are heterogeneous, and their embryological basis varies widely. Cyclopia and symmelia present a number of similarities: 1) They would appear to arise by neither fusion nor merging but mainly through a failure in lateralization. 2) Mesenchymal deficiency is important in both: possibly disturbance of the prechordal plate in cyclopia and failure of the caudal eminence in symmelia. The caudal eminence is an important developmental feature that is only recently becoming clearer in the human embryo. 3) Disturbance of axial material seems to be essential in bot

Trigeminal Neuralgia Resulting from Delayed Cervical Cord Compression after Acute Traumatic Fracture of Odontoid Process.

Trigeminal neuralgia is caused by compression of trigeminal nerve root and it leads to demyelination gradually. It was almost idiopathic and occurred unexpected. The upper cervical spinal cord contains the spinal trigeminal tract and nucleus. Fibers with cell bodies in the trigeminal ganglion enter in the upper pons and descend caudally to C2 level. We experienced a rare patient with facial pain, which was paroxysmal attack with severe pain after a clear event, cervical spinal injury (C2). So, this case reminds us of a possible cause of trigeminal neuralgia after a trauma of the head and neck.

[Differences in ipsilateral afferent currents in rats with and without pain syndrome in trigeminal neuropathy].

Ipsilateral evoked potentials in the caudal trigeminal nucleus, ventrobasal thalamus, and cortex during electrical stimulation of the injured and opposite intact nerves were studied in rats with trigeminal neuropathy caused by partial compression of the infraorbital nerve. In spite of abnormally increased long latent evoked activity in the caudal nucleus ipsilaterally to compression, amplitude asymmetry of the ipsilateral thalamic and cortical evoked potentials in rats with pain syndrome was shown to be absent during nerve stimulation of the snout sides. In rats without pain-evoked potentials

Afferent and efferent connections of cerebellar lobe C1 of the mormyrid fish Gnathonemus petersi: an HRP study.

The corpus of the highly developed cerebellum of the weakly electric fish Gnathonemus petersi is differentiated into four lobes, numbered C1 to C4. The present paper deals with the extrinsic connections of the rostralmost lobe C1. Relevant nuclei were studied in normal histological material and HRP injections were placed in lobe C1, the neighbouring pedunculus valvulae, and the brainstem. The largest number of afferents to lobe C1 originates from the nucleus lateralis valvulae, a large nucleus of tightly packed small cells in the dorsal midbrain tegmentum. In Gnathonemus this nucleus encompass

Trigeminal autonomic pathways involved in nociception-induced reflex cardiovascular responses.

Reflex cardiovascular responses elicited by noxious oro-facial stimulation are well known but the neural pathways that underlie trigeminal cardiovascular reflex reactions remain to be elucidated. In previous studies, we have shown that noxious electrical stimulation of the mandibular incisor in the anesthetized rat elicits increases in mean arterial blood pressure and heart rate (Allen, G.V., Barbrick, B. and Esser, M.J., Trigeminal parabrachial connections: possible pathway for nociception-induced cardiovascular reflex responses, Brain Res., 715 (1996) 125-135). In this study, microinjections

Long-term potentiation of primary afferent neurotransmission at trigeminal synapses of juvenile rats.

Primary afferent monosynaptic and polysynaptic excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSCs) were recorded from brainstem trigeminal neurons by stimulation of the mandibular nerve attached to the brainstem preparation of juvenile rats. A high-frequency conditioning stimulus induced long-term potentiation (LTP) of high-threshold EPSCs in the majority of trigeminal caudal neurons in substantia gelatinosa, where both A- and C-fibres terminate. However, the same conditioning stimulus did not potentiate low-threshold EPSCs in caudal neurons or EPSCs recorded from neurons in the middle part of trigeminal

Macaque monkey trigeminal blink reflex circuits targeting levator palpebrae superioris motoneurons.

For normal viewing, the eyes are held open by the tonic actions of the levator palpebrae superioris (levator) muscle raising the upper eyelid. This activity is interrupted during blinks, when the eyelid sweeps down to spread the tear film or protect the cornea. We examined the circuit connecting the principal trigeminal nucleus to the levator motoneurons by use of both anterograde and retrograde tracers in macaque monkeys. Injections of anterograde tracer were made into the principal trigeminal nucleus using either a stereotaxic approach or localization following physiological characterization

A glutamatergic Sp5C-STN circuit mediates chronic migraine in mice.

Chronic migraine (CM) is a prevalent and highly debilitating neurological disorder. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have demonstrated associations between abnormal brain region activation and CM, yet the underlying complex neural circuitry mechanisms remain unclear. The spinal trigeminal nucleus caudalis (Sp5C) serves as the primary central hub for orofacial nociceptive input, receiving trigeminal pain signals and projecting to higher-order centers such as the thalamus. Therefore, we sought to investigate whether the Sp5C region and its associated circuits were involved in

Oral and facial representation within the medullary and upper cervical dorsal horns in the cat.

Transganglionic transport of HRP was used to study the patterns of termination of somatic afferent fibers innervating oral and facial structures within the trigeminal nucleus caudalis and upper cervical dorsal horn of the cat. In separate animals, the superior alveolar, pterygopalatine, buccal, inferior alveolar, lingual, frontal, corneal, zygomatic, infraorbital, mental, mylohyoid, and auriculotemporal branches of the trigeminal nerve were traced in this experiment. The organization of the primary afferents innervating the oral structures is not uniform across laminae and at different rostroc

Organization of afferent and efferent projections of the nucleus basalis prosencephali in a passerine, Taeniopygia guttata.

The connections of nucleus basalis (NB) of the rostral forebrain of the zebra finch were investigated electrophysiologically and with anterograde and retrograde tracing methods to determine their functional organization, the sources of their pontine afferents, and the targets of their telencephalic efferents. The nucleus was found to be partitioned into three major components, a rostral lingual part that received a hypoglossal projection via a lateral subnucleus of the principal sensory trigeminal nucleus (PrV), a middle beak part that received a trigeminal projection via a medial subnucleus o

Distribution and structural characterization of neurons giving rise to descending spinal projections in the turtle, Pseudemys scripta elegans.

Descending spinal projections were investigated in the turtle Pseudemys scripta elegans following injections of horseradish peroxidase and/or radioactive wheat germ agglutinin into the spinal cord at various levels. Using various planes of section the cells of origin in the brainstem, cerebellum, and diencephalon were characterized according to their size, dendritic tree, and precise location. Projections to levels as far caudal as the lumbar spinal cord were found to arise from medial and lateral rhombencephalic reticular fields, including the perihypoglossal complex, the nucleus raphe inferi

Central projections of the ethmoidal nerve of the cat as determined by the horseradish peroxidase tracer technique.

The ethmoidal nerve innervates the nasal mucosa and constitutes the afferent limb of several upper airway protective reflexes. Protective reflexes, such as sneezing, coughing, and apnea, are those reflexes that either expel foreign substances from the respiratory tract or stop them from gaining access to the lungs. The afferents for nasal receptors are thought to be a part of the trigeminal system rather than olfactory in nature. The objective of this study was to localize the cell bodies of these ethmoidal afferents and to trace the central projections of these neurons. Horseradish peroxidase

Physiological and morphological characteristics of periodontal mesencephalic trigeminal neurons in the cat--intra-axonal staining with HRP.

Intra-axonal recording and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) injection techniques were employed to define the response properties of periodontal mechanoreceptive afferents originating from the trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus (Vmes) and their morphological characteristics. The periodontal Vmes neurons were classified into two types: slowly adapting (SA) and fast adapting (FA) types. The central terminals of 7 SA and 4 FA afferents were recovered for detailed analyses. The whole profile of SA and FA neurons were unipolar in shape and their cell bodies were located in the dorsomedial parts of the Vme

The sensory trigeminal system in birds: input, organization and effects of peripheral damage. A review.

The primary sensory trigeminal system in birds comprises the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus and the trigeminal ganglion with projections to the principal sensory nucleus (PrV) and the descending tract with its subnuclei. Other cranial nerves can contribute to PrV and the descending system that together form the somatosensory system of the head. There is also a proprioceptive component. The somatosensory system comprises a component serving tactile sense and a nociceptive component. The former processes information from many mechanoreceptors in beak and tongue; both PrV and subnuclei of the d

Light microscopic localization of calcitonin gene-related peptide in the normal feline trigeminal system and following retrogasserian rhizotomy.

Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is a neuropeptide that has been implicated in the transmission and modulation of primary afferent nociceptive stimuli. In this study, we describe the light microscopic distribution of CGRP immunoreactivity (IR) within the feline trigeminal ganglion and trigeminal nucleus of normal adult subjects and in subjects 10 and 30 days following complete retrogasserian rhizotomy. Within the trigeminal ganglion of normal subjects, cell bodies and fibers showed CGRP-IR, whereas immunoreactive fibers were rare in the central root region. Within the normal spinal trige

Location of motoneurons innervating soft palate, pharynx and upper esophagus. Anatomical evidence for a possible swallowing center in the pontine reticular formation. An HRP and autoradiographical tracing study.

Retrograde HRP studies indicated that motoneurons innervating soft palate and pharynx are located in especially the dorsal group of the nucleus ambiguus, while motoneurons innervating upper esophagus and cricothyroid muscles are located in the retrofacial nucleus, the most rostral part of the nucleus ambiguus. Autoradiographic tracing techniques revealed that in the caudal pontine tegmentum an area is located just dorsal to the superior olivary complex, that projects contralaterally to the ventral part of the trigeminal motor nucleus, the dorsal group of the nucleus ambiguus and the ventral pa

Referred pain.

Comprehending orofacial referred pain requires an understanding of the neuroanatomy of the trigeminal nerve and associated cranial nerves. It also requires knowledge of the concept of neuronal convergence as well as the recognition that the caudalis is laminated and is therefore responsible for sensory receptive fields-that one interneuron may receive multiple sensory inputs and that structures within a lamina have sensory neurons which project into the caudalis and may share the same interneuron.
