Exploring vestibulocerebellum-vestibular nuclei-spinal trigeminal nucleus causals communication and TRPV2 ion channel in a mouse model of vestibular migraine.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular migraine (VM) is a disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of dizziness or vertigo and is often accompanied by headache. The mechanisms underlying vestibular dysfunction and pain in VM remain unclear. METHODS: Chronic migraine (CM) and VM models were induced by NTG and kainic acid, respectively. Behavioral assessments were conducted to evaluate vestibular dysfunction and pain in the VM and CM models. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to examine peripheral receptor impairment. Immunofluorescence, including staining for Cellular Proto-oncogene (c-Fos),

Ultrastructure of transganglionic degeneration in brain stem trigeminal nuclei during normal primary tooth exfoliation and permanent tooth eruption in the cat.

Electron microscopy is used to study changes in the axons and terminals in the cat brain stem trigeminal nuclei, main sensory, and partes interpolaris and caudalis, during the process of natural tooth shedding. Areas previously showing light optical argyrophilic degeneration products and adjacent areas lacking this degeneration are included. Various types of alteration occur early during tooth loss, including increased presumed glycogen, increased cytoplasmic density, flocculence, lucency, and neurofilamentous hyperplasia. By the stage of maximum exfoliation, terminals and axons of marked dens

Nitric oxide synthase/nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase in the brainstem trigeminal nuclei after transection of the masseteric nerve in rats.

In this study, the responses of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase (NADPH-d) and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) activities were quantitatively analyzed at different times in both ipsilateral and contralateral sides of trigeminal nuclei, after unilateral trigeminal muscle nerve transection, in Sprague Dawley rats. In the control animals, both NADPH-d- and nNOS-positive neurons were constitutively distributed in the rostrolateral solitary tract nucleus, dorsomedial part of trigeminal nucleus oralis (Vo/Sn), and superficial layers (VcI/II) of the trigeminal nucleus caud

Projections from Regions of the Cerebellar Nuclei Receiving Jaw Muscle Proprioceptive Signals to Trigeminal Motoneurons and Their Premotoneurons in the Rat Pons and Medulla.

The cerebellum plays a crucial role in sensorimotor control through cerebellofugal projections from the cerebellar nuclei. However, little is known about the cerebellofugal projection features involved in jaw sensorimotor control, although the dorsolateral parts of the interposed cerebellar nucleus (IntDL) and medial cerebellar nucleus (MedDL) do receive proprioceptive signals bilaterally from rat jaw-closing muscle spindles (JCMSs). This study aimed to detail the cerebellofugal projection features involved in jaw sensorimotor control. Anterograde tracer was injected into regions of the rat In

Non-motoneurons in the facial and motor trigeminal nuclei projecting to the cerebellar flocculus in the cat. A fluorescent double-labelling and WGA-HRP study.

The cerebellar projection from the facial and motor trigeminal nuclei was studied in the cat by means of retrograde axonal transport of wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase and fluorescent tracers. The feline facial nucleus was cytoarchitectonically subdivided into ventromedial, ventrolateral, lateral, dorsal, intermediate and medial divisions (see Papez 1927), and the motor trigeminal nucleus into medial, ventral, intermediate, lateral and dorsal divisions. The neurons in the facial and motor trigeminal nuclei were classified as small (ovoid to round cells with a maximum diameter of t

The connections of the trigeminal and facial motor nuclei in the brain of the carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) as revealed by anterograde and retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase.

The connections of the rostral and caudal parts of the trigeminal and facial motor nuclei in the carp were studied with the horseradish peroxidase technique. Following ionophoretic peroxidase injections in these motor nuclei, retrogradely labeled cells were observed together with anterogradely labeled motor cell processes. Several cellular areas in thalamus, cerebellum and medulla oblongata were shown to project to the V and VII motor nuclei. Labeled cells were found in the inferior lobe and the glomerular complex of the thalamus. In the medulla oblongata, cells in the descending trigeminal nu

Convergent innervations of mesencephalic trigeminal and vestibular nuclei neurons onto oculomotor and pre-oculomotor neurons-Tract tracing and triple labeling in rats.

In studies of vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), the horizontal VOR circuit is much clearer than vertical-torsional VOR. The circuit and mechanism of gravity-related vertical-torsional VOR is probably weak. "Somatosensory vestibular interaction" is a known extra source to facilitate VOR, and cervico-ocular reflex is a representative for torsional VOR compensation. Whereas, how the cervical afferents finally reach the oculomotor system is less documented. Actually, when the head tilts, which generates cervico-ocular reflex, not only the neck muscle is activated, but also the jaw muscle is stretched

Changes in neuronal activities in the two ventral posterior medial thalamic nuclei in an experimental model of trigeminal pain in the rat by constriction of one infraorbital nerve.

The present study analyzes the activity of 120 neurons recorded in the two ventro-postero-medial (VPM) nuclei of the thalamus in a rat model of trigeminal neuropathic pain. Twenty-eight rats were tested 2 weeks after a chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the infraorbital nerve (IoN). These animals exhibited violent pain-related reactions to extremely weak mechanical stimuli applied to the lesioned and, to a lesser extent, unlesioned IoN territories. The activities of neurons recorded in the VPMc (n = 80) and VPMi (n = 40), contralateral and ipsilateral to the injured nerve, respectively, were

Changes in the axon terminals of primary afferents from a single vibrissa in the rat trigeminal nuclei after active touch deprivation or exposure to an enriched environment.

Lasting modifications of sensory input induce structural and functional changes in the brain, but the involvement of primary sensory neurons in this plasticity has been practically ignored. Here, we examine qualitatively and quantitatively the central axonal terminations of a population of trigeminal ganglion neurons, whose peripheral axons innervate a single mystacial vibrissa. Vibrissa follicles are heavily innervated by myelinated and unmyelinated fibers that exit the follicle mainly through a single deep vibrissal nerve. We made intraneural injections of a mixture of cholera-toxin B (CTB)

Effects of systemic bicuculline or morphine on formalin-evoked pain-related behaviour and c-Fos expression in trigeminal nuclei after formalin injection into the lip or tongue in rats.

This study examined differences in nociceptive responses between lip and tongue. Formalin-induced pain-related behaviour and c-Fos expression in the trigeminal caudal nucleus (Vc) with/without systemic preadministration of a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) type A receptor antagonist, bicuculline (2 mg/kg, i.p., 10 min before formalin injection) or a micro-opioid receptor agonist, morphine (3 mg/kg, i.p., 10 min before formalin injection) have been studied. Formalin injection into the upper lip induced an immediate pain-related behaviour, mostly face-rubbing behaviour, for 15 min (phase 1, mean

The Trigeminal Sensory System and Orofacial Pain.

The trigeminal sensory system consists of the trigeminal nerve, the trigeminal ganglion, and the trigeminal sensory nuclei (the mesencephalic nucleus, the principal nucleus, the spinal trigeminal nucleus, and several smaller nuclei). Various sensory signals carried by the trigeminal nerve from the orofacial area travel into the trigeminal sensory system, where they are processed into integrated sensory information that is relayed to higher sensory brain areas. Thus, knowledge of the trigeminal sensory system is essential for comprehending orofacial pain. This review elucidates the individual n

Time-specific effects of ethanol exposure on cranial nerve nuclei: gastrulation and neuronogenesis.

During the development of the central nervous system, neurons pass through critical periods or periods of vulnerability. We explored periods of vulnerability for cranial nerve nuclei by determining the effects of acute exposure to ethanol during development on the number of neurons in mature brainstem. Long-Evans rats were injected with 2.9 g ethanol/kg body weight on one day between gestational day (G) 7 and G13, inclusive. Two hours later, animals received a second injection of 1.45 g/kg. Controls were injected with equivalent volumes of saline. Brainstems of 31-day-old offspring were cryose

The central projections of the glossopharyngeal and vagus ganglia in the mallard, Anas platyrhynchos L.

The central projections of the glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves in the mallard have been studied with the Fink-Heimer I method and are compared to those of the trigeminal and facial nerves. The N. vagus projects ipsilaterally and contralaterally upon the central nuclei of the solitary complex, except the most rostral part of it, upon the n. sulcalis dorsalis, the parasolitary nuclei and the n. commissuralis. The glossopharyngeal nerve contributes to the rostral pole of the n. centralis anterior and to the n. ventrolateralis anterior of the solitary complex, but it has also terminal fields in

Light microscopic localization of calcitonin gene-related peptide in the normal feline trigeminal system and following retrogasserian rhizotomy.

Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is a neuropeptide that has been implicated in the transmission and modulation of primary afferent nociceptive stimuli. In this study, we describe the light microscopic distribution of CGRP immunoreactivity (IR) within the feline trigeminal ganglion and trigeminal nucleus of normal adult subjects and in subjects 10 and 30 days following complete retrogasserian rhizotomy. Within the trigeminal ganglion of normal subjects, cell bodies and fibers showed CGRP-IR, whereas immunoreactive fibers were rare in the central root region. Within the normal spinal trige

Invasion of cranial nerves and brain stem by herpes simplex virus inoculated into the mouse tongue.

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV) of a highly or slightly neuropathogenetic strain was inoculated into the tongues of mice. After appropriate survival times, the animals were killed and portions of the facial and trigeminal nerves as well as the brain stem were examined with virus isolation and immunocytochemistry for the presence of HSV. Both virus strains were demonstrated in the geniculate and trigeminal ganglia and in the CNS portion of the facial and trigeminal nerves, as well as in various brain stem areas including the trigeminal tract and nucleus, the facial and hypoglossal nuclei, and

Understanding Neuromodulation Pathways in tDCS: Brain Stem Recordings in Rat During Trigeminal Nerve Direct Current Stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) indirectly influences brain activity through cranial nerve pathways, particularly the trigeminal nerve. However, the electrophysiological effects of direct current (DC) stimulation on the trigeminal nerve (DC-TNS) and its impact on trigeminal nuclei remain unknown. These nuclei exert control over brainstem centers regulating neurotransmitter release, such as serotonin and norepinephrine, potentially affecting global brain activity. OBJECTIVES: To investigate how DC-TNS impacts neuronal activity in the pri

Central trigeminal and posterior eighth nerve projections in the turtle Chrysemys picta studied in vitro.

Recent electrophysiological studies in the turtle Chrysemys picta have suggested that a neural correlate of the eye-blink reflex can be evoked in an in vitro brain-stem-cerebellum preparation by electrical rather than natural stimulation of the cranial nerves. Discharge recorded in the abducens nerve, which is similar to EMG recordings from extraocular muscles during eye retraction, is triggered by a brief electrical stimulus applied to the ipsilateral trigeminal nerve. Evidence also suggests that pairing a one-second electrical stimulus applied to the posterior eighth nerve immediately prior

Central projection of proprioceptive afferents arising from maxillo-facial regions in some animals studied by HRP-labeling technique.

20 ICR mice (adult females) were used for analyzing the axonal projection of the trigeminal mesencephalic tract neurons and 10 Japanese shrew-moles for analyzing that of the snout proprioceptive neurons. The HRP-labeled axons were found to be ipsilaterally terminated in the trigeminal motor nucleus, supratrigeminal nucleus and trigeminal main and spinal tract nuclei, lateral pontine-medullary reticular formation, vagal dorsal motor and hypoglossal nuclei and the lamina V of the C2 spinal cord segments. No HRP-labeled axons were found in the facial and solitary nuclei and the cerebellum. Also,
