Apoptosis of human ovarian cancer cells induced by Paris chinensis dioscin via a Ca(2+)-mediated mitochondrion pathway.

BACKGROUND: Study of the mechanisms of apoptosis in tumor cells is an important field of tumor therapy and cancer molecular biology. Apoptosis triggered by activation of the mitochondrial-dependent caspase pathway represents the main programmed cell death mechanism. The mitochondrial-dependent apoptosis pathway is activated by various intracellular stresses that induce permeabilization of the mitochondrial membrane, leading to cytochrome C release. This study was to investigate the anti-tumor effects of Dioscin from traditional Chinese anti-snake venom medicine Paris chinensis (PCD) and correl

Novel 18-norspirostane steroidal saponins: Extending lifespan and mitigating neurodegeneration through promotion of mitophagy and mitochondrial biogenesis in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Pharmacological strategies to delay aging and combat age-related diseases are increasingly promising. This study explores the anti-aging and therapeutic effects of two novel 18-norspirostane steroidal saponins from Trillium tschonoskii Maxim, namely deoxytrillenoside CA (DTCA) and epitrillenoside CA (ETCA), using Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). Both DTCA and ETCA significantly extended the lifespan of wild-type N2 worms and improved various age-related phenotypes, including muscle health, motility, pumping rate, and lipofuscin accumulation. Furthermore, these compounds exhibited notable a

Antimicrobial and Antibiofilm Potential of Green-Synthesized Graphene-Silver Nanocomposite against Multidrug-Resistant Nosocomial Pathogens.

Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) pose a significant risk to global health, impacting millions of individuals globally. These infections have increased rates of morbidity and mortality due to the prevalence of widespread antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Graphene-based nanoparticles (GBNs) are known to possess extensive antimicrobial properties by inflicting damage to the cell membrane, suppressing virulence, and inhibiting microbial biofilms. Developing alternative therapies for HAIs and addressing AMR can be made easier and more affordable by combining nanoparticles with medicinal plants har

Automatic referral to cardiac rehabilitation.

OBJECTIVES: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) remains underused and inconsistently accessed, particularly for women and minorities. This study examined the factors associated with CR enrollment within the context of an automatic referral system through a retrospective chart review plus survey. Through the Behavioral Model of Health Services Utilization, it was postulated that enabling and perceived need factors, but not predisposing factors, would significantly predict patient enrollment. SUBJECTS: A random sample of all atherosclerotic heart disease (AHD) patients treated at a tertiary care center

Radionuclide Therapy of Prostate Cancer Using PSMA Ligands with a 4-Phenylbutyric Acid-Derived Albumin Binder: Recent Chemical and Clinical Advances.

Radioligand therapy (RLT) targeting the prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) has become a key treatment modality for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. However, the rapid clearance and suboptimal tumor uptake of current smallmolecule PSMA ligands limit their therapeutic index. Incorporating reversible albuminbinding moieties (ABM), particularly 4-phenylbutyric acid (PBA)-derived groups, has emerged as a powerful strategy to modulate pharmacokinetics by prolonging systemic circulation, enhancing tumor uptake, and improving radiation dose delivery. This review summarizes the c

Fatty acid signatures distinguish autotrophy, partial mycoheterotrophy, and full mycoheterotrophy in angiosperms.

Detecting partial mycoheterotrophy in green plants remains challenging, particularly in associations with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) or rhizoctonia fungi, because natural-abundance stable isotope patterns often provide limited diagnostic resolution in these systems. We tested whether fatty acid composition, widely used to infer trophic relationships in animal and soil ecology, provides complementary evidence of fungal carbon acquisition by plants. We characterized fatty acid profiles of 21 autotrophic reference plants, six partially mycoheterotrophic plants, and 17 fully mycoheterotrophic pla

Trillin alleviates rheumatoid arthritis by inhibiting TXNIP-mediated mitochondrial damage and NLRP3-dependent pyroptosis.

Macrophage pyroptosis in the synovial tissue of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) releases large amounts of inflammatory cytokines, which further exacerbate the pathological progression of RA. Trillin, a natural steroidal saponin in Trillium tschonoskii Maxim and other medicinal plants, exhibits potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities; however, its activity and mechanism of action in the treatment of RA remain unclear. To investigate the therapeutic effects of Trillin on RA and elucidate its underlying mechanism, we established in vitro macrophage pyroptosis models using Nige

Identifying Selected Mental Health, Physical, and Social Determinants of Extended Length of Stay After Elective Cardiac Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Cardiovascular disease is the second leading cause of death among Canadians, with approximately 40 000 open-heart surgeries such as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and valve replacements performed annually. The best practices after cardiac surgery include a hospital stay of 4 to 7 days to facilitate safe discharge. We explored associations between an extended length of stay and selected mental, physical, and social determinants of health routinely collected before surgery, with the aim of informing the development of a future prescreening instrument to better identify patient

Analyzing the temporal trends of kidney transplantation surgeries and their impact on warm and cold ischemia time in a Canadian setting.

BACKGROUND: The effect of weekend admission and surgery on patient morbidity and mortality has been studied in many settings and has been shown to lead to worse outcomes. Several studies have sought to determine whether there is a weekend effect in kidney transplantation specifically, but a clear effect on outcomes and graft survival has not been established. METHODS: We analyzed data from all deceased-donor organ procurements and cadaveric kidney transplants occurring during the 5-year period between Apr. 1, 2013, and Dec. 31, 2017, included in the database of the Trillium Gift of Life Netwo

Transnasal endoscopic medial maxillectomy in recurrent maxillary sinus inverted papilloma.

UNLABELLED: Candida auris is the most common, globally detected nosocomial fungal pathogen with multi-drug resistance. The high prevalence of C. auris infections has raised concern about drug resistance and adverse effects, compounded by a lack of effective alternative drugs. Bioengineered nanomaterials play a significant role in combating nosocomial infections. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have emerged as an extensively used nanomaterial due to their prominent antimicrobial properties. One of the most promising approaches is to incorporate herbal extracts that contain a range of phytoconstitu

Anti-Rheumatoid Arthritic Effects of Paris Saponin VII in Human Rheumatoid Arthritis Fibroblast-Like Synoviocytes and Adjuvant-Induced Arthritis in Rats.

In the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), rheumatoid arthritis fibroblast-like synoviocytes (RA-FLS) have tumor-like characteristics, mainly manifested by hyperproliferation and resistance to apoptosis and then it will erode the bone and cartilage, eventually leading to joint destruction. Paris saponin VII (PS VII) is an active compound derived from a traditional herbal medicine named Trillium tschonoskii Maxim, which has anti-tumor, analgesic, and immunomodulatory effects. However, its anti-RA effect has not yet been reported. This study was to investigate the effect of PS VII on two
