Coronoid hyperplasia in chronic progressive trismus.

Hyperplasia of the coronoid process of the mandible has been observed in conditions like Oral submucous fibrosis, TMJ ankylosis, etc. The etiopathogenesis of this coronoid overgrowth has not been clearly sequenced or adequately hypothesized, and no definite mechanism has so far been advocated to explain this elongation of the coronoid process in the above mentioned conditions. Coronoid hyperplasia is seen in both these conditions despite being completely unrelated etiologically. However, progressive hypomobility of the mandible seems to be the common underlying condition in both the cases. We

Orthodontics-related foreign body causing trismus.

A previously healthy 13-year-old female patient presented with a 7-day history of otalgia, pharyngitis and trismus without fever, dysphagia or dyspnea. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed an orthodontic archwire penetrating the pterygoid musculature. This case highlights the importance of performing a thorough workup in cases involving unusual symptoms.

Trismus-pseudocamptodactyly syndrome: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Hecht and Beals in 1969 described an autosomal dominant syndrome characterised by severe restriction of mouth opening, camptodactyly, shortness of leg muscles and, as a direct consequence, foot deformities. CASE REPORT: A case of a 4-year-old girl affected by this unusual syndrome is described. The patient underwent bilateral resection of coronoid processes by intraoral approach. An intraoral device was used in the immediate postoperative period in order to maintain mouth opening. Once at home, the patient has had, for six months, phisiokinesic therapy by means of a modified Darci

Unilateral trismus caused by vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia.

Vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia is a relatively uncommon pathological entity and generally asymptomatic. We report a quite unusual case of unilateral motor trigeminal involvement with trismus, due to VD. Apart from tetanus or local morbid conditions of the mouth, trismus is often attributed to disturbed programming and co-ordination of the masticatory muscles within the mesencephalic nucleus. The possibility of truncal compression of the trigeminal motor root by vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia being responsible for masseter muscle spasm, in analogy with the pathogenetic mechanisms proposed in he

Rostral mandibulectomy for the management of trismus in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 5-year-old domestic shorthair cat was evaluated for weight loss and poor coat condition due to an inability to open its mouth (trismus) following head trauma 2 months previously. Contrast CT, electromyography and temporal muscle biopsy identified findings consistent with muscle atrophy, denervation and degeneration. Conservative treatment failed to improve the trismus so a rostral mandibulectomy was performed. Following surgery, the patient resumed normal grooming behaviour and was able to eat soft food unaided. The cat re-presented 5 months postoperatively at which time its bo

Predictors for trismus in patients receiving radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Trismus, a restricted mouth opening in head and neck cancer patients may be caused by tumor infiltration in masticatory muscles, radiation-induced fibrosis or scarring after surgery. It may impede oral functioning severely. The aims of our study were to determine: (1) the incidence of trismus at various time points; and (2) the patient, tumor, and treatment characteristics that predict the development of trismus after radiotherapy in head and neck cancer patients using a large database (n = 641). METHODS: Maximal mouth opening was measured prior to and 6, 12, 18, 24, 36, and 48 mo

Hyperekplexia and trismus due to brainstem encephalopathy.

The brainstem is said to be the generator of pathological startle responses due to reticular reflex myoclonus or hyperekplexia. A patient with facial weakness, nystagmus, and pyramidal tract signs had generalised reflex spasms in response to auditory, visual and tactile stimuli which clinically and neurophysiologically resembled hyperekplexia. The case is unusual because as well as hyperekplexia, the patient's initial presentation was with an equally rare manifestation of brainstem pathology-brainstem mediated trismus. The causes of brainstem trismus and exaggerated startle responses are discu

Orthopaedic aspects of the trismus pseudocamptodactyly syndrome.

The trismus pseudocamptodactyly syndrome is a relatively rare condition with autosomal dominant inheritance, characterized by decreased ability to open the mouth (trismus), interphalangeal flexion deformity with wrist extension (pseudocamptodactyly), various foot deformities, and slightly less than normal stature. Five affected individuals from one family are reviewed and the orthopaedic aspects are described. The presence of trismus is emphasized for the orthopaedic surgeon, as it may lead to anaesthetic complications during the treatment of the musculoskeletal problems.

Aspiration of peritonsillar abscess in severe trismus.

We present a novel method of aspirating a peritonsillar abscess in a patient with severe trismus. In our experience, this method is efficient, allows good access to the peritonsillar area and facilitates rapid resolution of the trismus before definitive drainage can be performed.

Surgery for severe trismus in submucous fibrosis.

Bilateral full thickness naso-labial flaps have been used successfully in three patients to give long-term relief of the severe trismus caused by oral submucous fibrosis. The flaps are set into defects created by incision of the oral mucosa. The postoperative rehabilitation compared favourably with other methods and we now advocate the technique for all cases of submucous fibrosis requiring correction of severe trismus.

Trismus-pseudocamptodactyly syndrome in a Japanese family.

A family in which five individuals through three generations were affected with trismus-pseudocamptodactyly syndrome is reported. The propositus, an 8-year-old boy, had a right embedded ear, inability to open the mouth fully, pseudocamptodactyly and soft tissue syndactyly of the toes. His paternal grandmother, father, paternal uncle and his paternal cousin had pseudocamptodactyly. The occurrence of the syndrome in this Japanese family indicates that the syndrome is not exclusively of Dutch origin.

Longitudinal outcomes of trismus release with free-flap reconstruction in primary and secondary oral submucous fibrosis-related trismus.

BACKGROUND: Oral submucous fibrosis is a global health concern associated with betel quid use and results in trismus, which can be either primary or secondary in origin. Severe cases often require trismus release with free-flap reconstruction. This study examined longitudinal outcome trends following trismus release and compared the outcomes of patients with primary and secondary oral submucous fibrosis-related trismus. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study by including patients who underwent trismus release between 2013 and 2022. All procedures were performed by a single surgica

Trismus resulting from central nervous system lesion.

Three cases of unusual trismus are reported, occurring in patients with lesions of the central nervous system. On the basis of the clinical and electromyographical findings and observation of the course of the trismus this is interpreted as a symptom of a lesion of the brain stem, causing a dis-synergism of the masticatory muscles.

Recurrent trismus: twenty-year follow-up result.

The authors encountered an unusual case of recurrent trismus in a patient who had oral synechia, cleft lip and palate, digital anomalies, and external genital anomaly. Mandibular movement was severely restricted by congenital soft-tissue adhesion in the retromolar region. Despite aggressive surgical efforts and postoperative manipulations, limitation of mouth opening recurred soon after each operation. Furthermore, congenital and postoperative soft-tissue adhesion resulted in severe subsequent jaw deformities, which needed combined maxillary and mandibular advancement.

Trismus-pseudocamptodctyly syndrome: report of one case.

Trismus-pseudocamptodactyly syndrome is a rare neuromuscular disorder that manifests as a combination of hand, foot, and mouth anomalies. Limited range of motion for hands, feet, and mouth are typical presentations. A male term newborn baby was noted to have trismus, ulnar deviation of both wrist joints, limited stretch of digits during hand dorsiflexion but with full digital extension during volarflexion, and talipes equinovarus of the right foot. These anomalies were not seen in his parents. Hecht syndrome, or trismus-pseudocamptodactyly syndrome, was diagnosed with a negative result of elec

Trismus in head and neck cancer: translation and validation of the Chinese version of the Gothenburg Trismus Questionnaire-2 (C-GTQ-2).

OBJECTIVES: Trismus, marked by restricted mouth opening, significantly affects patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and head and neck cancer (HNC). Despite its prevalence, specialized questionnaires for trismus assessment are scarce. This study aims to fill this gap by translating and validating the Gothenburg Trismus Questionnaire version 2 (GTQ-2) into Chinese (C-GTQ-2), enhancing the evaluation of trismus in HNC and TMD patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study involved 78 HNC patients, 75 TMD patients, and a control group of 150 individuals without trismus symptoms. Participant

Trismus due to myotonia associated with hyperadrenocorticism in a dog.

We present the report of trismus due to hyperadrenocorticism-associated myotonia diagnosed by electromyography in a dog. An intact female Miniature Dachshund, 13 years and 9 months old, presented with stiff gait and trismus as well as polyuria and polydipsia. Abdominal ultrasonography showed enlarged adrenal glands. An adrenocorticotropic hormone stimulation test revealed an exaggerated response. Based on these findings, this case was diagnosed with hyperadrenocorticism. Electromyography revealed myotonic discharge in the temporalis muscle and limbs. Therefore, trismus was considered to be cau

An Unusual Case of Severe Trismus After Craniotomy.

Myositis ossificans Traumatica (MOT) is a non-neoplastic, heterotrophic ossifying disease process in muscle and soft tissue rarely involving the craniofacial area. Treatment depends on the extent of ossification and functional limitations. We present the first case of MOT of the temporalis muscle following neurosurgical intervention. This is the case of a 28-year-old male patient who underwent numerous neurosurgical interventions and reported progressive trismus following these interventions. Imaging demonstrated a right temporal region radio-opacity consistent with ossification of the tempora
