Effects of mindfulness training on running performance in a tropical climate.

Tropical climates can impair aerobic performance and alter psychological responses during exercise. Mindfulness-based intervention has been associated with improvements in sport performance; however, to our knowledge, no studies have examined their effects on running performance in a Tropical Climate (TC). The present study aimed to investigate whether a 6-week mindfulness intervention was associated with improved running performance and more favourable psychological responses during exercise in a TC. Thirty-two university students (Mage = 21.8 years) were randomly assigned to either a Control

Secondary Intention Healing for Fingertip Amputations in a Tropical Climate.

Background: Various studies have examined occlusive dressings in fingertip amputations and reported good outcomes. Occlusive dressing preserves appropriate pH, cell accumulation and moisture for healing, thereby limiting scar formation and deformity. To our knowledge, no study was performed in tropical Asia. This study aims to demonstrate the viability of healing fingertip amputations through secondary intention using an effective dressing technique, even in warm tropical climates. Methods: All patients who presented to our institution with fingertip amputations from 1 July 2020 to 31 July 202

Climate change, malaria and neglected tropical diseases: a scoping review.

To explore the effects of climate change on malaria and 20 neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), and potential effect amelioration through mitigation and adaptation, we searched for papers published from January 2010 to October 2023. We descriptively synthesised extracted data. We analysed numbers of papers meeting our inclusion criteria by country and national disease burden, healthcare access and quality index (HAQI), as well as by climate vulnerability score. From 42 693 retrieved records, 1543 full-text papers were assessed. Of 511 papers meeting the inclusion criteria, 185 studied malaria,

Rising coastal wave hazards from climate-driven winds and tropical cyclones.

Coastal wave storms are intense, long-lasting hazards that threaten populated shorelines worldwide. Under global warming, large-scale wind patterns are changing and modifying ocean surface waves. However, the long-term evolution of coastal wave storms and the drivers of their change remain poorly quantified on global scales. Here, using global wave simulations with corrected tropical-cyclone winds for 1990-2023, we show that coastal wave storm frequency increases worldwide, with the strongest rise along the Atlantic coasts (∼5% per decade). This basin-wide enhancement is primarily driven by in

Climate variations and Salmonella infection in Australian subtropical and tropical regions.

This study aims to quantify the relationship between climate variations and cases of Salmonella infection in subtropical and tropical areas in Australia. Brisbane in a subtropical area and Townsville in a tropical area of Queensland were selected as the study regions. Local meteorological variables and notified cases of Salmonella infection from January 1990 to July 2005 were provided by local authorities. Spearman correlation and time-series adjusted Poisson regression were applied controlling for autoregression, lag effects, seasonal variation and long-term trend. Natural cubic spline and Ho

Tropical cyclone-blackout-heatwave compound hazard resilience in a changing climate.

Tropical cyclones (TCs) have caused extensive power outages. The impacts of TC-caused blackouts may worsen in the future as TCs and heatwaves intensify. Here we couple TC and heatwave projections and power outage and recovery process analysis to investigate how TC-blackout-heatwave compound hazard risk may vary in a changing climate, with Harris County, Texas as an example. We find that, under the high-emissions scenario RCP8.5, long-duration heatwaves following strong TCs may increase sharply. The expected percentage of Harris residents experiencing at least one longer-than-5-day TC-blackout-

The Connection between Climate Change, Surgical Care and Neglected Tropical Diseases.

The surgical burden of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) is set to rise alongside average temperatures and drought. NTDs with surgical indications, including trachoma and lymphatic filariasis, predominantly affect people in low- and middle-income countries where the gravest effects of climate change are likely to be felt. Vectors sensitive to temperature and rainfall will likely expand their reach to previously nonendemic regions, while drought may exacerbate NTD burden in already resource-strained settings. Current NTD mitigation strategies, including mass drug administrations, were interrup

Gestational length of Thoroughbred mares kept in tropical and subtropical climates.

Gestation length (GL) in horses varies widely, influenced by multiple variables, including maternal, fetal, and environmental factors. This study aimed to investigate and quantify the relative contributions of climatic (photoperiod and temperature-humidity index - [THI]), maternal (age and parity), fetal (sex) and environmental (year and month of foaling) variables influencing gestation length in Thoroughbred mares. Retrospective data encompassing 704 pregnancies across nine breeding seasons in tropical and subtropical Brazilian climates were analyzed. Stepwise regression analysis identified f

Increased shallower tropical cyclones under extreme warm climates.

Changes of tropical cyclones (TCs) under warming climates are of great concern due to their destructive impacts. While changes in TC intensity and rainfall rate have been well documented, far less is known about changes in vertical structure, which are crucial for determining the severity of TC-related hazards. Here, we show that the proportion of shallow cyclones, characterized by convective updraft maxima and low-pressure anomalies confined to the lower troposphere, increases significantly under extreme warm climates. Notably, during the Early Eocene Climatic Optimum (EECO), shallow cyclones

Tropical cyclones and climate change: An overview for the public health community.

Tropical cyclones (TCs) strain the public health system, particularly as coastal communities and infrastructure grow. Increases in sea level and ocean temperatures motivate research into how anthropogenic climate change is affecting TC behavior. We provide a comprehensive overview of TCs and available tools to study them, then introduce key TC-climate change relationships of greatest relevance for public health. We discuss observed trends and future projections in global TCs using observations, theoretical basis for observed trends, and results from a wide array of models. There is high confid

Disentangling tropicalization and deborealization in marine ecosystems under climate change.

As climate change accelerates, species are shifting poleward and subtropical and tropical species are colonizing temperate environments.1-3 A popular approach for characterizing such responses is the community temperature index (CTI), which tracks the mean thermal affinity of a community. Studies in marine,4 freshwater,5 and terrestrial6 ecosystems have documented increasing CTI under global warming. However, most studies have only linked increasing CTI to increases in warm-affinity species. Here, using long-term monitoring of marine fishes across the Northern Hemisphere, we decomposed CTI cha

Bioremediation of diesel from a rocky shoreline in an arid tropical climate.

A non invasive sampling and remediation strategy was developed and implemented at shoreline contaminated with spilt diesel. To treat the contamination, in a practical, cost-effective, and safe manner (to personnel working on the stockpiles and their ship loading activity), a non-invasive sampling and remediation strategy was designed and implemented since the location and nature of the impacted geology (rock fill) and sediment, precluded conventional ex-situ and any in-situ treatment where drilling is required. A bioremediation process using surfactant, and added N & P and increased aeration,

Climate and landscape context drive the functional composition of young tropical forests.

Human-modified tropical landscapes are mosaics of farmland, young regrowing forests, and old-growth forests. These fragmented landscapes are hotter and drier than forested landscapes and, combined with climate change, may lead to shifts in forest community composition. We asked how macroclimate and surrounding landscape shape community-level drought strategies of young regrowing secondary forests. We assessed community composition of 37 young secondary dry and wet forests in Ghana during the first 3 years of succession, collected drought-related leaf and stem traits of their pioneer species, a

Cumulative pre-cooling methods do not enhance cycling performance in tropical climate.

The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of mixed cooling techniques (combination of internal and external strategies, with and without menthol) during warm-up for a time trial in tropical climate. Seven heat-acclimatized trained male road cyclists participated in three experimental sessions consisting of 20-min cycling performances on a velodrome track in ecological hot and humid conditions (Guadeloupe, French West Indies; WBGT: 27.64±0.27°C; relative humidity: 76.43±2.19%), preceded by a standardized 30-min warm-up and the ingestion of cold menthol water (1) with a cool

Innovative dual-step management of semi-aerobic landfill in a tropical climate.

Despite concerted efforts to innovate the solid waste management (SWM) system, land disposal continues to represent the most widely used technology in the treatment of urban solid waste worldwide. On the other hand, landfilling is an unavoidable step in closing the material cycle, since final residues, although minimized, need to be safely disposed of and confined. In recent years, the implementation of more sustainable landfilling aims to achieve the Final Storage Quality conditions as fast as possible. In particular, semi-aerobic landfill appears to represent an effective solution for use in

Case series of equine pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction in a tropical climate.

The clinical manifestations of equine pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) in temperate climates are well described. The classic presentation is that of an older animal with hirsutism, laminitis, poor muscle tone, pendulous abdomen and weight loss. This case series highlights the additional clinical signs of anhidrosis and heat stress with secondary exercise intolerance that were seen as primary presenting problems in equids with PPID in the hot, humid conditions of a tropical climate. The clinical signs resolved with medical treatment for PPID.

[Ectopic pregnancy in tropical climate. An ultrasonographic study of 93 consecutive cases].

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Ectopic pregnancy (EP) is common in Cameroon, and incidence is increasing. Ultrasound (US), has been shown to play a key role in its diagnosis, particularly when the transvaginal (TV) route is used. The purpose of our work is to describe sonographic features of EP, and to assess the role of the transvaginal route in the diagnosis of this disease in our environment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study was prospectively carried in the US unit of the Yaoundé University teaching Hospital (Cameroon) during a 2 year period. 502 patients aged 14 to 45 were included because of cli
