Comparison of cycloplegic effects of atropine and tropicamide in children with refractive error.

BACKGROUND: Refractive error is the primary cause of vision impairment in children and requires accurate cycloplegic refraction for proper diagnosis and treatment. Various cycloplegic agents are used clinically, but their comparative efficacy remains controversial, particularly across different pediatric age groups and refractive error types. The purpose of this study was to observe the cycloplegic effects of tropicamide and atropine in children of different ages and different refractive errors, and to screen out more suitable drugs for cycloplegia in children with different refractive errors.

Early signal of diverted use of tropicamide eye drops in France.

AIMS: Tropicamide is a mydriatic drug used as eye-drops for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. From 2013, a diverted use by intravenous route has been suspected in Eastern Europe in opioids users. To date, no signal of misuse has been identified in France. The aims of this study were to investigate any early signals of a diverted use of tropicamide eye drops and to collect information regarding motives for the misuse and tropicamide-induced effects. METHODS: Information was obtained at three levels: (1) at regional level (Midi-Pyrénées area), from reimbursement data and pharmacists' reports

Short-term anatomic response of the choroid to tropicamide in myopic patients.

We aimed to investigate how tropicamide alters subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFChT) and choriocapillaris flow density (CD) and determine the predictive factors of choroid thickness and vascular density in myopic eyes. This retrospective study was conducted from September 2018 to March 2019. SFChT was measured with enhanced depth spectrum-domain optical coherence tomography. The choriocapillaris was imaged using optical coherence tomography angiograms. Ocular parameters were measured thirty minutes before and after 1% tropicamide instillation. Twenty-five eyes of 15 patients (mean age 38.12 ±

Polydrug abuse by intravenous use of heroin and tropicamide-containing eyedrops.

BACKGROUND: Drug abuse is rarely limited to a single substance; polydrug use is the norm rather than the exception. In many cases, the misuse of potentially psychoactive substances can lead to serious intoxications and results in addictive behavior. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 22-year-old heroin-addicted woman presented in our clinic reporting a 2-year history of intravenous injection of an eyedrop solution containing 1% tropicamide, an antimuscarinic agent. She reported injecting tropicamide because it attenuated symptoms and signs of opiate withdrawal and it also has hallucinogenic and euphorigenic

The tropicamide test in patients with dementia of Alzheimer type and frontotemporal dementia.

The tropicamide test was applied to 30 patients with probable Alzheimer's disease (pAD), 12 with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and 46 healthy subjects. One drop of 0.01% tropicamide was instilled in one eye and one drop of saline solution in the other. The pupil diameter was measured with a Goldmann pupillometer in its basal condition and 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 45 and 55 minutes afterwards. The results do not show differences between pupil dilation observed in pAD and in FTD; in both groups, from the beginning of the test, the pupil dilated more than in healthy people. A high interindividual

Injecting eye-drops: a mini-review on the non-clinical use of tropicamide.

OBJECTIVES: The intravenous (IV) injection of tropicamide for non-clinical purposes is a new and widespread drug trend. The aim of this study is to provide the first literature review on the topic. METHODS: Relevant literature was identified through a search of MEDLINE, Psycinfo, Google Scholar, conference proceedings and select citations. RESULTS: Cases of tropicamide (IV) injection have been reported in Russia, Italy, Turkey and Kazakhstan. This phenomenon is mainly secondary to primary opioid (especially heroin) addiction. Several key factors can be associated with its rapid diffusion: (i

Cycloplegic effect of atropine compared with cyclopentolate-tropicamide combination in children with hypermetropia.

BACKGROUND: Cycloplegic refraction is important in assessing children with hypermetropia. Atropine, though the gold standard cycloplegic agent for refraction in children, has a long duration of action and more severe side effects compared to short-acting cycloplegic agents. The aim of the study was to compare the cycloplegic effect of atropine with cyclopentolate and tropicamide combination in children with hypermetropia. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This was a crossover interventional study in children with hypermetropia. Cycloplegic refraction using two separate regimens of cycloplegic drugs was d

[Objective refraction in black children: cyclopentolate and tropicamide combination, a reliable alternative to atropine?].

INTRODUCTION: Cycloplegia allows for an objective refraction in children. Atropine is the gold standard but causes prolonged blurred vision. Cyclopentolate is less effective but less disabling. Tropicamide is a weak cycloplegic. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a cyclopentolate and tropicamide combination (CTA) versus atropine for refraction in black children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a prospective study between October 2011 and July 2012 on all children seen in consultation. Objective refraction was performed after cycloplegia with cyclopentolate 0.5% combined with tropic
