Worksite-induced morbidities among truck drivers in the United States.

A critical review was conducted of social, psychological, and health science literature on the array of health risks and morbidities of truckers. Multilevel worksite-induced strains (e.g., long work hours and fatigue, shift work and sleep deprivation, postural fatigue and exposure to noise and vibration, sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy diet, exposure to diesel exhaust fumes, and other occupational stressors) were categorized into six primary morbidities for truckers: (1) psychological and psychiatric disorders; (2) detriments resulting from disrupted biological cycles; (3) musculoskeletal di

Hypersomnolence and accidents in truck drivers: A cross-sectional study.

Truck drivers are more likely to suffer severe injury and death due to certain truck driving characteristics. Identifying and preventing factors associated with accidents in this population is important to minimize damage and improve road safety. Excessive daytime sleepiness is a major public health problem, leading to impaired cognitive function, reduced alertness, and increased risk of motor vehicle crashes. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the prevalence and predictors of hypersomnolence (defined as an Epworth Sleepiness Scale score greater than 10) among truck drivers

An ergo-ophthalmological battery of tests to classify truck drivers.

16 healthy and ophthalmologically normal truck drivers are tested with a battery of tests according to the routine described in the following paper. This includes isopter perimetry, colour discrimination, recovery of sensitivity during dark adaptation and refraction at both far and near points, in order to record night myopia as well as night presbyopia. The ranges of individual variability are reported. As far as refraction is concerned, it seems of interest to stress the individual differences in a sort of "transient anisometropia" under incoming twilight.

[Asbestosis in a truck driver: a clinical case and analysis of the exposure].

The paper reports a case of asbestosis in a truck driver whose anamnesis, at first, revealed no evidence of previous exposure to asbestos, whether occupational or extra occupational. A pleuro-pulmonary fibrosis was discovered in 1987, following an episode of exudative pleurisy on the right side. The thickened pleura was then surgically removed. In the samples of pleuro-pulmonary fibroid tissue taken during the operation, typical asbestos bodies were demonstrated in optical microscopy. The analysis of possible exposure to asbestos that might not have been referred in the anamnesis revealed that

The prevalence of drugs and alcohol in fatally injured truck drivers.

To assess the impact of alcohol and other drug use in the trucking industry, the National Transportation Safety Board, in collaboration with The National Institute on Drug Abuse investigated fatal-to-the-driver trucking accidents in eight states over a one year period. Comprehensive drug screens were performed on blood specimens collected from 168 fatally injured drivers. One or more drugs were detected in 67% of the drivers and 33% of the drivers had detectable blood concentrations of psychoactive drugs or alcohol. The most prevalent drugs were cannabinoids and ethanol, each found in 13% of t

Risk factors associated with truck-involved fatal crash severity: Analyzing their impact for different groups of truck drivers.

INTRODUCTION: Fatal crashes that include at least one fatality of an occupant within 30 days of the crash cause large numbers of injured persons and property losses, especially when a truck is involved. METHOD: To better understand the underlying effects of truck-driver-related characteristics in fatal crashes, a five-year (from 2012 to 2016) dataset from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) was used for analysis. Based on demographic attributes, driving violation behavior, crash histories, and conviction records of truck drivers, a latent class clustering analysis was applied to cla

NIOSH national survey of long-haul truck drivers: Injury and safety.

Approximately 1,701,500 people were employed as heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers in the United States in 2012. The majority of them were long-haul truck drivers (LHTDs). There are limited data on occupational injury and safety in LHTDs, which prompted a targeted national survey. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health conducted a nationally representative survey of 1265 LHTDs at 32 truck stops across the contiguous United States in 2010. Data were collected on truck crashes, near misses, moving violations, work-related injuries, work environment, safety climate, driver

Sleep and sleep-disordered breathing in commercial long-haul truck drivers.

We have performed a study assessing the prevalence of sleep-disordered breathing in a large US trucking company using a validated portable monitor (MESAM-4) and a validated symptom questionnaire. Three hundred eighty-eight drivers with a mean age of 36 years filled out the questionnaire. One hundred fifty-nine drivers with a mean age of 35 years spent the night at the terminal hub where they underwent monitoring for identification of sleep-disordered breathing. The drivers also had blood pressure recorded while awake, seated, and after 15 min of quiet rest. Seventy-eight percent of the drivers

Exploration of Barriers and Facilitators to Healthy Eating in UK Truck Drivers.

BACKGROUND: The working environment of truck drivers promotes unhealthy lifestyle behaviours including physical inactivity and poor dietary choices. This leads to high levels of chronic diseases and a reduced life expectancy compared to other occupational groups. However, little is known about how drivers in the UK perceive their working environment and how this affects their food choices. This study aimed to gain a better understanding of long-haul (8-10-hour shifts) truck drivers' needs regarding healthy food choices whilst on the road to better inform future health promotion programmes and
